Today, I lvled it for the first time. I went to Yhoator Jungle solo as my 62 DRG (now 63, btw, yay! ^^) and I fought about like 15 monsters (about 20 mins), and then it said "Man, I'm exhausted. See you later!" or something of that nature, and left. I've been hearing people say your NPC doesn't actually gain EXP unless you're the same lvl as it, etc., etc., but when I went to the Rendezvous Point, it was wearing new Lizard Gloves and Boots. Does this mean it gained EXP? Also Turtlelin's NPC gained a lvl from him fighting with it as a 52. <.< I think it does actually gain EXP regardless of your character's level. Only time will tell.

A small experience with partying and npc's. ^^

I switched to my lvl30 whm and had my friend (29war/nin) come out with his npc pearl. We were to enter yutunga, buff, find a safe camp, summon npc's and quartet some mandies.

We did just that, for a full 45 min. We didn't acmoplish anything amazing (mandies were about 65exp gob's were from 60-180) Total we earned about 1.2k+ exp.

On a few occasions a gob linked right after a few mandies... With the help of our npc buddies we were able to excape alive! ALL FOUR OF US! One of the npc's had a sliver of health left and we were both in the red but for the most part "Shield" npc's LOVE to tank.

We also discovered they like to skillchain! As long as you open and they have tp, but they'll ws if they have the tp too. (I assume it gives you like 10 sec from when they get 100tp to ws before them.) You can always close on their ws if thats too dificult. ^^ They would occasionally sc with eachother, and/or stun a gobbie readying its bomb if they had tp which completely amazed me. They definately aren't some diablo2 ripoff. They used fast blade, flat blade and red lotus blade, in our party experiment.

Tips on healing npc's: If you normaly program 6 macro's for all 6 pt memebers to cure (p0-p5), change the macro to heal yourself into <st> instead of <me>. Sure, you can use <ft> to target your npc it will ONLY target your npc, nobody else's.

Protect/shell/cure/bar anything you can cast on someone when plvling you can cast on your npc. Its tricky not to click on them, but not extremely difficult. Just takes some getting used to, I'm fairly certain that it does not decrease their timer.

After they de-spawned, we headed back to ru'lude gardens R.point to check em out. Both npc's had changed from bronze/brass/scale mail to the lizzard set. Can't wait til tomorrows adventure in the jungle! Maybe they'll have enough gil for the Eisen set then. lol ^^ I'll keep ya posted! ~Aet

Had a pretty fun 15 minutes with my beastmaster, crawler pet, and NPC owning stuff outside of windy ealier lol. From the sounds of it, this definately is looking/sounding alot of stamina based. Like if have your NPC rest, it regains the usual HP/MP but also has a hidden stamina stat/percentage also. You all should get what i'm saying lol...

The way I see how it works is like this.

Your NPC friend starts with LVL 30. When you level mobs that is less than worth awhile your NPC friend get 0 exp but if you level mobs that is IT or something like but for you it is easy pres your friend NPC will get lot's of EXP, kind of sweet and easy to level NPC that way if you have a higher level job.

I will test this later when I can summon NPC again and then when it gets LVL 31 I make her a healer.

Hm.. If she get a new job will she then be level 1 I wonder??

Wow, I'm disappointed now. =(

After getting my NPC last night, I decided to give him a try. I went out to Battialla with my 65 rdm and called my NPC. We fought about 12 things, in 17 minutes before he said he had to go. After he left, I went up to Ru'lude Gardens to see if there was any change in him, but there was none at all. He still had the same armor on. ; ;

Hopefully it'll get better tonight when I can call him again. I'm going to try with my 26 sam, to see if me gaining exp makes any change.

Hmmm...I noticed something looking at turtle's screenshots that could be a possiblitly. Of course this is pure speculation and brainstorming. I could be way off.

The NPC says "No matter the job, I can fight in any style" This could imply that eventually your NPC will be able to change jobs, and then fight in a particular style within that job. So when you choose "healer" you aren't actually telling it to be a healer, but you are telling it what style to use.

For example, right now the NPC is some sort of WAR type. By choosing "healer style" the NPC might not do anything different because they have no healing capabilities. Now what if you could change his job to RDM for instance. You could tell him to be a healing RDM, attacking RDM, or a shield RDM. A healing RDM would of course cast cures and such, an attacking RDM would melee and cast nukes, and maybe a shield RDM would cast debuffs.

Just a theory...we will find out soon enough. Great job on all the experimentation so far though. And thank you for all the updates to keep us laggers informed. :-)

edit: I just read where someones NPC intimidated the skeleton NM. If that makes it a PLD then I guess they WOULD be able to heal as they are now. So maybe that is the only job they can get. Although, we also know that they provoke meaning they have a WAR subjob. Either that or the NPC's don't go by any of the normal job rules. Which is possible....hehe

Ok i have found out that your npc is not stupid i went to Xcrbard (sp) and fought our way down to the demons fighting mostly bones then the demons once a demon started casting Asorb-Int and my npc quickly followed with Flat blade, it was cute seeing my npc trying to stop the spell for me... it didnt work and i resisted it anyway but still cute

also can anyone confirm what changes the npc's armor? like what keeps it from changing to Breastplate instead of Centurians (sp?) and what determins what pice of armor will change on it i fought in Xcarbard and only her boots changed, my cousin on the other 71sam, fought in Rolanbery fields and his npc's body, hands and feet all changed to the breastplate armor

I"m addicted to this NPC thing.

I went out with my 32 WAR/NIN and 30 NPC in Batallia and we were owning DCs and EPs and nearly a T (before Bomb toss got the best of me).

The NPC is NOT Bad, not at all. I never saw her use a WS (She never gained enough TP), but she could Tank.

Also, I found out the brunt of the Utsusemi change....You lose a little less hate than a pld does when he gets hit. So its just like getting hit, but a little less. And its only Shadows, not "the X misses Me"

Had Hate bouncing from the NPC to me when She kept Voking at odd times. A T gob hit her for about...oh...about 40. While me at 32 got hit for about 60 (then again, I didnt have "good" armor, this was just a test).

I died, and alas the NPC just collapsed. I didnt check to see if she had new armor, but I doubt it..;)

I hope shes farming her butt off. I wanna see her in Eisenburst armor soon :) (She dont need to farm much, its like 25k for the non HQ set...)

I think the Armor changes are randomish.

I'm fairly certain he's a PLD. When we were fighting the first skellie NM, he cast protect on himself and provoked it. So he's either PLD or buttersheep.

Hey, nice thread, I'll add my input.

During the quest I noticed someone's NPC intimidating the skeleton NM, so it seems like they're PLD for that fight, at least.

My NPC is a Mithra and started with gear that has the appearance of Scale armour, a Xiphos, and a small wooden shield that I haven't had a good look at.

Day 1: In Tahrongi as level 8-9 RDM with my NPC. She stayed for 23 minutes while we killed stuff, then left just after a fight. I checked a Rendezvous Point and her body and legs now look like the level 40 Breastplate set.

Day 2: In Batallia Downs as level 30 PLD. My NPC took more damage than me from being hit, but seems to have a lot of HP. I ended up dying from a link after 13 minutes and she teleported away when I did, so I don't know how long she would have stayed. Checked Rendezvous Point and her gloves now match her body and hands.

I took my NPC buddy out with my 40 BLM last night, was killing EPs and we both ended up dieing to a bomb toss (>.<)

Anywho, when I met him at the rendezvous point he was no longer wearing body armor lol. I guess they can lose armor too...

So, here's an idea:

Maybe the NPCs are like the Dragon Chronicles: worth 500-1500 xp each time you summon them. Even if you aren't getting XP from them, they're getting XP from whatever you're killing with them. So of course it's a benefit to fight things you also get xp from.

I know they also leave if there's a long idle time, but I imagine that's a crowding control mechanism.

To answer questions about how much xp i've gained before my NPC leveled, i'd say that it couldn't be more than 500-600xp. Soloing EPs as a 52 NIN in Eastern Altepa for about 25 minutes each would only give me about 10-25 xp per fight. I only fought EP stuff there except for 1 spider which was Too Weak while I was there and stuck to dhalmels and beetles to avoid AoE. Didn't rest at all and both times my Signal Pearl timer was at 19:35ish.

My theory is that level is based on a combination of the number of monsters killed and the level of the monster compared to the level of the npc. My other thought is that the xp the npc can gain each time is capped and thus it leaves when it reaches that cap. As a result, i'm expecting people to start reporting 31 dings very soon on their third time out.

As for me, I'll continue using my ninja on EPs since that seems to work pretty well.

Excellent job on your researches guys... now we know mainly the fact that if your NPC dies it can lose/downgrade armor.

as well as the fact that jobs and settings can be adjusted at a later point.

and this is only day 2/3 for most of us.. wait until day 30 rolls by.... lolz

had mine out today for the 3rd time - got different job styles today. ^^

Day #1 Leveled my 6 MNK. Had her out for like 10 min before she died from crawler poison in West Sarutabaruta. ><

Checked Rendezvous point, still original scale set she started in, no changes.

Day #2 Just messing around. Took her out in Batallia Downs with my 33 BLM. We did ok, again only lasted about 10 min. I got cocky and wanted to see if we could take something harder. *I* died and she despawned.

Checked Rendezvous point, her body piece had changed to some type of tank armor that I don't recognize. The rest appears to be scale still.

Day #3 Leveling mnk again. Still 6 though I leveled while she was with me to level 7. We did pretty well, got about 800 exp before she was 'exhausted' and left.

Checked Rendezvous point, she now has Lizard body and blue gloves, legs and feet. I now have the option of setting her as "Attacker" and "Healer" in addition to "Shield". I'll try "Healer" out tommorrow.

I called my NPC in Battalia Downs while I was 71PLD/35WAR and fought Gobs, Birds, Tigers, and Weapons (no way I would get ANY XP).

Just for the interest of posterity, I would engage, hit the mob once, then turn around so my NPC would effectively solo the mob (while I was still provoking and maintaining hate).

I have a Hercules Ring, so when I eventually did get into the Yellow/Orange I noticed a dramatic increase in the frequency that my NPC would Provoke...pretty much every 30 seconds.

We did this for awhile, and when I got TP I was actually able to Skillchain with him when he did Burning Blade -> Savage Blade. All in all I thought it was pretty fun.

After 36 minutes and after finishing off the Gob we were fighting, he left saying something along the lines of "it's been a busy day!".

I go back to check him in Jeuno, and he has new boots on...look like Steel/Iron. Still level 30 though and no new options in the NPC menu. I'm looking forward to seeing what he gets after today's session ^^.

I was farming goblins with my 66 WHM/SMN in Yuhtunga this morning, and called up my galkan battle buddy for the first time.

I had a few rounds fighting the goblins and some mandys before he mentioned he reached his quota and left. When I checked with him back in Jueno he had aquired some new gloves, blue with tan trim.

Everything we fought in the jungle was twtbww for me. I suppose that he gained experience anyway, for having the result of the new armor. He's still level 30 after one session.

Voldai didn't jump in after my double punch > true strike fusions, perhaps he had insufficient tp. It was fun having my "battle buddy" there alongside the summons while we were duking it out afterwards. One extra fighter that doesn't cost mp to keep out. Nice. Too bad he can't be around more often...

Yesterday as i was leveling with my NPC (PLD43/war21) i accidentally talked to her trying to cure her, so i got pissed. Thing is when i went back to a Rendevouz Point i saw her wearing and armor that id never ever seen before, it was either shade harness or something much much higher: the mythril breastplate. Its black with steel looking frame stuff going in an awesome patter all over her body. If anybody can tell me what it is let me know because it is SO bada$$.

i was messing around with galka body guard yesterday for the first time in Rolanberry Field i am 64 whm

basicall you can cast ne thing on ur npc that you would be able to cast on someone OUTSIDE your party. Some examples of spells i used were Protect IV, Haste, Cure I-> III. as i stated befor spells that can only be casted on party members wont work.(IE. Regen, barfira, etc)

basically he lasted about 30 minutes befor he got tired and left.

i didnt get a chance to check him but i definetly will when i get home!!

i can confirm, that you DO NOT do not, do NoT need to directly gain xp to level your NPC. as lv.73, i took my NPC to yhoator jungle killing everything in sight (all too weak). this was my second time calling her out here, ive never pulled her out as any other job. she leveled and left after 15 mins of killing. i had no options of changing combat style, and her body piece downgraded from lizard to scale, and boots upgraded from scale to chain

Wow, cool update but i have a question

I've only gotten like 30 seconds each day (yes i know -_-) because i accidently clocked on her and she left. Is there anyway for me to tell her that i DON'T want her to leave??

and she's wearing lizard set now :3

your npc will leave after what it seems a max of 45 mins, or any amount of time less than that, depending on how quickly it reaches max quota, if you click on it, it will leave automatically, im guessing you get the gear upgrades, but no xp
