Secondly, I consider myself NA, as in "North American Player" I play on the NA version, I live in NYC. Because my FFXI is NA version, I can't input in Japanese. So, I've been treated much the same way NAs do...who cares if I can type in Roma-ji. JPs still think I'm NA.

Personally, I think SE screwed up royally with their decision to disable Japanese input support in the NA client, while allowing the NA client to view Japanese. And the sad thing is, most JP don't even know that the NA client is lacking in that regard.

So it's hard for them to sit there and read English flow by in the PT chat window. They do try to understand it but will certainly diminish their fun time - it would be like going back to school for them!!

I think part of this is due to the "IM culture" NA playerbase. I'm from the IRC generation (that is, pre-IM), and I detest having to read words like "ur" and "2". Gives me a headache, and I could easily see where even a JP player who has a decent understanding of English would have a hard time keeping up with that type of conversation.

I'm from the IM period and I still hate reading that U and 2 crud. I won't correct anyone one on it but I still hate it...Back on topic i'm glad to see a different view on the Japanese that isn't steaming with "The japanese are superior!" Mentality. Rate up.

Well, it may have been a necropost but I actually think it has huge significance again, just from some recent experiences.

Many new players joined our servers just over a year ago from the inroduction of Xbox players to FFXI. This release led many non NA and JP players into the game, as PC gaming isnt as big over here in Europe comparitivley.

My linkshell is a European social LS. Scince the 360 version was released, its numbers pretty much exploded from a small group of friends making their way through the game, to a "proper" LS. Many of these players needed excessive help, as the its a very overwhelming game to walk into late, as many early NA players found many years ago.

Those new Xbox players who had experience through the Beta testing were from a server that essentially had its own laws and conventions. Some far different from ours on established servers, so while they understood the basic elements of the game better, they were still in a different place in terms of social ettiquette.

One thing I noticed in these new players, was a total lack of understanding of the Japanese in our game. From many people, it bordered on pure Rascism. I have had many instances of smacking people down for berating Japanese as a whole, without taking the time to learn about the reasons why things are like this. I was totlly apalled by their words and actions, because like so many other "veterans", had just grown to understand and co-exist on the level described in this post: They have a mistrust of us that simply cannot be erased, yet we do our best without outbursts or hatred.

The newer players who I see exhibit this terrible behaviour, need to read this post. I must admit, I have at times felt a simalar way as the Japanese do to Americans regarding the wave of Xbox players. Im not proud of it, but their inexperienced ways can be distressing to me. The difference is, that there is (generaly) no language barrier for me not to help them as there was for the Japanese.

I think people need to try harder on all sides. I know I do, and this post reminded me of this. Be excellent to eachother!

Some of the older PC/PS2 NAs weren't all that happy with the influx of X360 players either, I can hardly fault the JP for having a negative attitude toward some of their Halo-fanboi antics.

Granted, they aren't teabagging each other the way some of them did, but we got a lot more kiddies with MS.

Incredible post and rate up!

really interesting and thought provoking.

Also as a side comment I have once been greeted by a French speaking mithra red mage who was trying to ask me something but I couldnt understand.
and a Russian female Elvan red mage who meleed while subbing /smn in a merit party while talking about the mother land.. I am not kidding lol!

So yeah it isn't all just about NAs and JAs.

I have run into plenty of Chinese players too but the majority of those players were not really playing the game. >.> another topic indeed.

The biggest difference though is that Americans tend to live with a very "Serve me in some way or go away" disposition. Of coarse this is not always true but one has to admit that FF11 is a very "get to the point right now or accomplish nothing" kind of a game.

I am pretty sure that people who buy gill and justify cheating are usually those kinds of people.

while i do belive most are JP only because of language barrier, i dont allways buy into it. lots of them will reply with/or have in /seacom English too weak. 95% of them will never reply to you when you ask if they want to party, even if you use auto translator and use common courtesy and tell them where party is at and what jobs you have. they can not even reply with a simple No thanks. allways funny when you then have your other JP member invite them and they say yes, then you can wave at them when they end up in the party that they where ignoring because a NA invited them. i am not going to sit here and try to understand why most of them are ****** lots of them are cool, and will talk to you in party using the translator, but most will either never use the translator to save their lifes or just will flat out ignore you.

This is interesting, is there a companion piece where you post a summary of NA players for the Japanese? I'd like to read that too.

And I'm interested to hear what Japanese players were like when they were noobs at the launch of the game. And how do they treat new Japanese players today? Do they all explain things to Japanese noobs? Do all Japanese noobs do a bunch of research before they play? What are Japanese linkshells like?

I think they actually have a much easier time of that, if they're PS2 only. There are softcover FFXI guides in Japan, and they're actually updated reasonably often.
