Link to an article on BBC news about a deadly plague in WoW here.

Anyone ever heard of a thing like this in EQ? Are there detrimental spells that can affect other players, even if they were cast on you? (Not talking about AoE-spells now...)

Morning Bbot,

EQ2 had a similiar thing happen about 6 months ago. SOE introduced a plague into the realm and only high level guilds could raid the guy who could end it. It was some vampire guy that they had to kill. He was the cause of the plague.

Other then making your character barf every so often, the actual plague itself was really nothing. It just provided some entertainment in the form of amusing character animations. You caught the plague by standing in close proximity with an infect PC/NPC. Sometimes you got it, sometime you didn't and it usually stuck around for 45 minutes of play time. You could cure it through potions but they were expensive and people just ran around infecting everyone since it really didn't affect gameplay.

That would be pretty funny, zoning into a PoK full of dead bodies and a couple of level 70s looking around. I could finally look around the place for a few minutes before the computer freezes up.

Of course it would suck to be standing there buying some water and have a pet drive by and stick you with some fatal DoT.

What about that plague eq1 had a few years ago in west and north karana? The one with the giant beetles that were dropping blue diamonds and were surrounded by hundreds of baby beetles.

I think that would be Hillarious. Make some animations of toons foaming at the mouth and blame it on Fippy! The one and only Fippy Darkpaw has finally avenged his father!

What's really scary is WOW has 4 million subscribers.

/boggle

I don't get it. I played WoW and didn't think that much of it.

4 million subscribers.....heh.

You can think they twist it if you want. wow is insanely popular, accept it.

I would say that 25% of the 400 people I work with play wow and the demographics are 18-35 year old male. a decent amount have wives and girlfriends that also play. WoW has catered to the masses.

I still think EQ is a better game though. It's missing the "fun" look of wow and that's about it.

That's right. I remember getting odd messages whilst hunting in the Karanas.

WoW also had serious marketing. I never saw an EverQuest advertisment on television.

http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart7.html - according to this site EQ has a 5% market share, whereas WoW has 22% and EQ2 has 3%.

I like the site linked above. am not sure, that it's 100% accurate, but at elast it gives you an indication.

Actually I play both EQ and WoW. When Blizzard released it's subscriber count, they were only counting active subscriptions (paid either by credit card or game card) and those accounts on the 30 day free trial that comes with the game. The were not counting the canceled or expired accounts or the ones that were on the 10 day guest pass that comes with each retail box now. So 4 million worldwide sounds about right.

The game is amazingly fun. I call WoW my fun game and EQ my work game. I'm a die-hard EQ player, have played it since release (my guild killed Xegony for the first time last night, go us Smiley: yippee), but I really enjoy WoW for the solo content, the graphics I absolutely love, they're gorgeous, and the fact that I can pop in for 30 minutes, finish up a quest (*gasp* what's that you ask?) and log out.

I can now have the best of both worlds, my raiding, progressive one and my fun kick around one. Isn't life grand?

The numbers in that chart are from each companies press releases. Since I don't trust the PR dept of ANY company I would take all those from every company with a grain of salt.
