For a few days PoK has been a very slow loading zone. I notice I zone a bit slower than normal in some other places as well, but PoK is insane.

I've also noticed a few slow link deaths, but I don't normally ever go LD.

I blame DoD and it's various patches.

Edit: I just re-read your post and realized I'm talking about something else.

RAM is a big factor on zoning. You don't say how much you have. 768 meg from 512 meg would make a big difference.

Defragment your hard drive. If you haven't done so in awhile the file data for Everquest will be scattered around your harddrive and will take longer to access.

Turn off everything (Luclin models, shaders, etc) and see if this improves your speed. If so, you have a video card issue. Turning off the sky also helps. Make sure your video drivers are up to date and installed properly.

Get a RAM managment program. EQ likes to hog memory and gets bloated after awhile. While we're on the subject you didn't say how much RAM you're running off of. 512 MB of RAM is about the minimum these days.

Memory is most important inexpensive way to increase speed, in my opinion 512 meg is bare minimum. Also if you have 768+ you can help take a bit of the load off your Video card by increaseing your AGP Apature memory in your system bios. Default is normally 32 or 64 I would increase it to 128 or even 256 if you have 1024 in system memory. This will allow your video card to use some of your system memory. I have a second computer that is a PIII 933 with 1.5 gig memory that handles EQ just fine.
