Hail! I am working on an article for a magazine production class about roleplaying evil charecters and the benifits one might derive from this. Please reply with any thoughts on the subject or personal stories. Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

If they are evil why would they want to help?

Well you get to (obviously) roleplay as ANY type of evil "being" you want to =P Which is amusing, like, how some RP'ers wont group with races opposed to their faction and what not. But then again, there is a line not to cross, you could deeply offend someone but WHO CARES! thats why its Roleplay right ^_^?. Ummm. so yeah.

Since this is the focus of your essay, I will try to offer some relevant input.

When writing anything, always consider your reader first. You and people on these forums are deeply familiar and experienced with roleplaying but some of your readers may only have heard of it in passing.

First, you must define what it means to roleplay and illustrate the similarities and differences in roleplaying good and evil. When defining evil roleplaying, I think it is important to note that "evil" does not equate to "mean." As we all know, many gamers make this mistake.

I now play a Human Monk and I roleplay her but not in the way some might think. I do not say 'thee' or 'thou' and I do not say things like 'I must meditate prior to the encounter.' My roleplaying consists of what I do not do. It is quite simple. I do not talk about real life things. To me, that is roleplaying.

I used to play a Dark Elf Necromancer and I role played her with more flair. But again, I did not always do it directly but with emotes. 'Reyla grins as her foes disentigrate' Reyla can not help but to envy her dead comrades' and so forth.

When I did roleplay evilly in conversarions, I was careful not to be mean but rather selfish and indifferent. "You may group with me, and I will fight by your side but be advised, an increase in my own power is all I will fight for."

The benefits?

I cannot pinpoint any benefits to roleplaying evil over good but roleplaying benefits in general include an outlet for your imagination, an escape from real life concerns and a chance to be like a person you are not.

Actually, I always found most of the challenge in roleplaying evil characters comes from developing a story or rationale for being "evil" beyond "Cause he's a necromancer". Sometimes it's cultural such as Iksar being born into a society of Cazic worship but I also have a priestess of Bertoxxolous whose backstory relates to her just being selfish and petty. The short version is that she started down the path when some new merchants in town threatened the wealth and prestige of her parents (and her). She was offered the chance to deliver some fabric to the newcomers that was tainted with disease. Though she was told it would only sicken them, she wasn't overly bothered when the fever killed them outright. Since then she continues to serve Bertoxxolous not out of any devotion to the concept of decay but because it's a path to power and a means of quietly eliminating those who **** her off.

Just to chuck something into the pot here mainly for Rayla.

I play a paladin mostly, when I rp is it "good". Interestingly I had a very long running debate at one point with an "evil" character.

My argument was that good and evil were just opposite sides of a different coin. That the "evil" character was as loyal and honorable to his allies and god as I was too mine and loyalty and honour counted whatever the cause.

He would have none of it, and basically as is your argument, decreed that ultimately his actions were only to benefit himself. He defended his allies, for benfit to himself, and followed his god only for the reward that would follow.

I am not convinced ..

How much does the OP know about the Lore of EQ?

I *try* to keep my characters consistent with EQ Lore for the most part. I do construct back-stories to justify any deviations. Mostly for my own asthetics...

e. g.
My Iksar (universally hated by non-Iksar races in Norrath) monk has worked factions in several cities to do quests and other things (basically be free to move around). Her story is she was sent out by her great grandfather to learn the ways of the Human monks (even though the Iksar tradition is much older).

I could never have a Dark Elf fighting the Orcs in Crushbone for example. Group with light elves to kill ghouls in Lower Guk? Sure.

I do not think my Tunare Druid will ever raid Plane of Growth or kill Tunare either.

My Bertox (evil) Cleric has several conundrums in his story that allow him to fight on either side. He will not do anything overtly which would ruin factions and thus remains fairly unmolested in any city.

As to grouping with players from 'the other team' as it were, if you look at places like PoK or Abysmal Sea, you see all the races living together so I think of the PCs as being more 'evolved' than the rest of the Norrath-bound NPCs.

But as you see, most of my 'role playing' is internal. It makes the occasional comment in groups particularly funny.

That's probably my biggest gripe with the EQ storyline over the years -- the races have become homogenized to where it's either "Everyone works together" (LDoN, Gates, Omens) or, at most, "Good vs Evil" such as PoK and the DoN camps. In the Old World, my Bertoxxolous worshipping human cleric and Cazic following Erudite shadowknight are toast in Neriak, Grobb, Cabilis and Ogguk. Trolls are in danger in Ogguk and vice versa. Iksar are, of course, universally hated and return the favor. You'd never know this from the hug-fests in Lavastorm. Even among the good races, though they don't kill one another on sight, you'd get a cheery "I've got something for Erudites right here... the door!" in Kaladim when you attempt to use the merchant.

I understand that most players don't like grouping restrictions especially ones that can keep them from playing with their friends -- the failed alignment rules on FV showed that. But, in a game lore sense, racial tensions are thrown away lately for an easy "Us vs. Them" solution.
