wondering about EQFollow

#1 Sep 12 2005 at 4:33 PM Rating: Decent
I played EQ for about 2 years and quit playing around the time LDON came out... I was just wondering if the population of the game was alot lower now because of WoW or can i still get just about the same amount of people online?

All (iirc) the servers were merged. The zeks were all merged into one server. The regular servers were merged with another server to help increase both their populations.

Lately there have been more and more people coming back from other games like EQ2 and WoW. Population doesn't seem to be a big problem. The lower end isn't as populated as the high end. However I still see new players joining the game.

Since LDoN SOE has added 4 expansions (the 4th being released live this week); Gates of Discord (GoD), Omens of War (OoW), Dragons of Norrath (DoN), and the new Depths of Darkhollow (DoD). The Oow expansion increased the lvl cap to 70. DoN introduced some nice and fun instanced mission (more variety and skill than LDoN's system) with similar point rewards as LDoN. DoN and DoD have added more benefit to the lower lvl players than expansions before.

I know you don't really want to know this, but Firiona Vie remains unmerged and transfer ban in place.

Save me!

Coming back, gosh.. if you were sitting here I might be able to summarize the changes since LDoN in a few 8 hour sessions with a white board and Powerpoint. It's like a new game, go play it.

I can tell you from my experience in trying to level up alts you will have a miserable time once you hit about lvl 25. When you hit about 15ish you can jump in paludal caverns groups as easy as anything, however after that it just seems like all the lower level players vanish. I am currently sitting on a 25 necro and a 27 berserker cause I can NEVER find a group. Only reason my berserker is 27 is because I pled him with a friend.

ITs really ashame, I remember a year ago or so leveling up a enchanter from scratch doing nothing but LDON, but that seems like a thing of the past. Even if you make a solo class its a long road leveling from 25 no matter what gear you got. Unless you got some friends wanting to start with you, I would really think hard before buying into it again.

Fronglo I hate to pick your post to quote because what you say is true. It is almost impossible to find pick up groups at any level. I did, however, highlight it because some of the problems with the game that are the fault of the players and not the game itself stand out.

**You do not have to go to Paludal at all during your EQ career, there are other zones.
**You can hunt in Paudal Caverns from level 1 if you do decide to go.
**There is more content than LDoN.

If your entire EQ experience has been Paludal Caverns and LDoN, you are missing 99.99% of Everquests content.

I PL in Paudal too. I often see dozens of level 27 and 26 characters LFG in /ooc. They simply do not know they should go somewhere else. It is time to move on.

Jesterscap, to answer your question. Everquest server populations are down considerably, in spite of the server merges. Peak times are good but if you log on at times other than weekday evenings in the US or weekends in the US, you may find it a ghost town.

Or perhaps they went somewhere else and it was empty. Paludal always has people in it. I've gone to zones I would like to play in but find it empty. I'd rather group than solo so I go to zones where I'm more likely to find others.

I haven't had any problems finding groups at any level with any of my chars (bst, war, rog). It's been said many, many times:

Don't sit around waiting for an invite, start your own groups.

Make friends with others your level, so that when you log in the next day, if they're on, you already have someone to group with.

Yes, the people are in NL, PC, and DSP. Guess what? They're just as bored with it as you are. A Even if my group started in DSP (or whatever), rarely do I have a problem convincing them to move to some place actually good. Even if they don't admit it, everyone knows the loot and xp in DSP sucks. I spent most of my levelling in zones like Scarlet Desert (hot zone), Unrest (dungeon ZEM), ToFS (hot zone), CoM (dungeon ZEM I believe), or Crystal Caverns (dungeon ZEM).

Yes, you can be level 25 and sit /lfg in pok all day, and then complain there's no one to group with. Or, you could go play the game.

My new rogue just dinged 51, after starting the weekend at 47. The weekend before that (holiday weekend) I did 36 - 46. And a week before that, she was level 20. I did all of that in pick up group after pick up group, sometimes with the same people, usually with strangers, occassionally with a guild alt here and there. I was never LFG, and I didn't kill a single mob in DSP (though several of the groups were formed there).

Obviously no one is saying you have to level that quickly or persistantly, but the groups are there if you take the initiative.

Just my experiences...

(need to add rogue to sig)

The loot in Dawnshroud Peaks does suck, but the XP isn't bad at all - Unfortunately, most groups stay there long after the mobs they're hunting have turned DB.

Big pet peave of mine. I *HATE* grinding low DBs in a group. Try to make it interesting, at least. I solo'd about 7 or so levels on my Shaman in DSP, and occasionally, I'd accept an invite to a group, which would invariably decide to start killing mass amounts of stuff that's been DB to me for ages. I'd usually hang out for a bit, and then duck out to go kite Reds and Yellows.

Other than that little bit, I aggree whole heartedly with your post.

There's no reason that Necro has to be parked at level 25. (I love soloing clases)

As for the zerker, I'd park him in OT, or Unrest (basement groups). In just a couple levels he'll be about the right level for Gunthak.

I usually park my characters in high traffic areas, because it's just easier to get a pick-up group that way.

I've been playing for about a year now. It just seems so strange to me to hear about the problems getting groups.
Besides, who needs a full group anyway? There nothing wrong with Duo'ing. I've got some great EQ friendships that were born out of inability to snag a group. (On a given night, as opposed to as a chronic problem.)

I think a lot of this may be server dependant, as well, but I never had a problem on Brell, and now that it's CT, it's even easier. (I think shrouds will make it easier to find low level group mates too.)

Honestly, getting pickup groups with inconsiderate or incompetant players is a much bigger problem in my eyes.
