I have a feeling those that have played for a while (Pre-Luclin) will appreciate this.

Inspired by some of the posts here about Old-World guilds, and Old-World style of play, I decided to take it upon myself to create a fresh toon, and **not twink** at all.

Definition: No buffs given to me outside of a group will be kept (can't do anything about drive-by heals).

Not a single cp piece or piece of gear was traded down to this character.

PoK books will not be used.

Everything on this character, spells, gear, etc. is earned by this character. For example, I've been camping the trainer hill for the SBS for 3 days. Pure Old-School, folks.

To clarify this to people in game, I wrote a description basically saying NO BUFFS PLEASE - I'm going for a 100% untwinked character, so I can basically say inspect me to people, so they "get it."

All I have received thus far has been negativity.

"You won't make it far."

"Noone will want to group with you."

"You are basically turning vegatarian."

"You are an idiot."

"You are gonna die alot."

"It cannot be done."

YES IT CAN.

I have other toons. I have my Epic. I have been to the planes. I have twinked from the Bazaar. I have made first level toons and given them stuff they shouldn't have until into their 50's. I've done it already.

But before the Bazaar, there was a thing called QUESTING. If you started your account pre-Luclin, you had to **gasp** actually EARN what you had.

That Centi Longsword that you picked up off a trader? Someone actually KILLED a mob for it.

I personally do not give a d@mn if you have the greatest gear on the planet - I care if you know how to play the game.

Case in point: while camping that SBS, a group formation ooc was called out. I joined in, not knowing what I was getting myself into. The player who called for the group was a 5th level enchanter who had uber gear.

He overpulled. He fizzled. He ran. He didnt communicate to the group. He KSed others in zone. Best of all, he got wiped out about 6 times.

I, in my stitched burlap / newbie armor, swinging my rusty scimitar, gained 3 levels, and almost maxed out skills, once I disbanded from him and formed another group, and didn't die once.

My Points:

1.)All the gear in the world isn't gonna help you if you don't have the knowledge, experience, and skills to back it up.

2.)It is VERY possible to create an untwinked charachter, through and through, and not only have fun, but slowly rise to the top of the totem pole. The character I am talking about dinged to level 12 yesterday.

3.)Don't tell me it isn't possible. The pioneers of this game who have been the ones stocking the bazaar KNOW that it IS indeed possible.

4.) You play your way, I'll play mine, but don't you dare insult me for choosing to play this way.

So, my question is this: why am I getting berated for choosing to play this way, vs. twinking to the depths of the Abyss?

Wish me luck - I'm planning on getting that SBS tonight, and then it's off to get the bear-hide cloak, or the prayer shawl.

LOL, that's actually pretty funny.

In all seriousness, play the game how you want man. I know it's easier said then done when you have people badgering you, but you're paying for the subscription every month. If you want some support, find one of those old world guilds and app with them. It shouldn't even matter if they're on a different server, since you're starting that toon from scratch with no twinkage.

Bravo !!

Kunark Expansion here and I have had to start with nothing and quest items and pp. I turned out fine and twink the hell out of my new toons....cause i think it is fun. I /salute you for what you are doing. I will also go out on a limb here and say that in 3-6 months when you are mid lvl to 50's, you will know how to play your toon 100 times better than most. LUCLIN killed the game from a "know your class" point of view...I mean how many 50+ peeps really know there toons anymore? Ebayers/ Power lvlers if fine....but know your class for peet sakes.

Anyways, good post !

I think it's a great idea, but the only real problem I see is that you're doing it alone. If you had a guild or a group of friends doing the same thing it would be fine, but unfortunately, your contribution to the group will be woefully under par when grouped with most people that play using bazaar purchases, etc. You'll probably find that groups will be hard to come by, and people will start to know you, and prefer not to group with you (since they won't likely be interested in your idea). This is the reason, most likely, that people are taking exception to your idea; they see it as taking away from their potential experience gain.

The only class I really see you being able to pull this off with, alone, is a Necro. They're pretty damn uber (comparatively) with nothing but a handful of bone chips.

True, it would be easier with a group or guild; but I think the point he's making is that easy is not the point.

My problem is that when I take my little monk to LOIO (and I had to think for a minute to remember the zone name), there's no one there to group with her. So in that sense, yes, it would be much more workable to do this with friends - particularly for a melee character. Some casters and some hybrids can solo pretty well, with varying degrees of success at various levels.

But, yeah. Good luck, and have fun. Sounds like you know what you want, and that in itself goes a long way.

I tried this with a little barb shm on Morden Rasp, working from the pulling area right outside the canyon to Halas. Unfortunately it was full of twinks, which was good, less to aggro me, but they insisted "Group with me I will level you up fast." "Here take these buffs." etc etc. What I was trying to do was pull like I had to back in the old days, naked with a slow club, carefully stalk one woofie, draw him back into the canyon, do him, med, and back to the fight. The way it worked out was, pull him back to the canyon, bang twink jumps in, kills woofie, and says, "See I helped you, now you have to group with me!"

Since I did not want to come back at 3am, I gave up. I am sure their hearts were in the right place, they just didnt understand what I was trying to do.

Heck, I might try it again. :)

I think you could play like you want these days. I have a young barbarian on Povar (Morden Rasp) and the EF newbie area is pretty empty. There are also usually no more than three people in Blackburrow at any given time. I do miss the days of trains running up the ramp every 5 minutes and waiting to camp the green room. I guess everyone goes to PC now (I can't stand that place).

Nah, I decided to go with a druid. In the time that I have been playing, I have never once created a Necro. Not because I didn't want to, but because of lack of slots for new toons. I have a tendency to keep characters, even if I don't really dig on them all that much.

Possible Progression Path

Crushbone will prolly last me until 15 or so.
LOIO / Karanas until mid 20's.
Karanas / Frontier Mountains / Overthere until mid 30's
Rathe till the 40's

I figure I can do root rotting or fear kiting enough that I wouldn't "neccessarily" need a group, but only time will tell...

Thanks to all for the words of encouragement. :-) Nice to know that not everyone is going to insult you for trying something different...

I understand the frustration, but to lash out in a sense probably wasn't needed. You have to know you're going to get a lot of crap from people about being different. When you do something outside the norm it's what you're going to get, you've got to accept it and know ahead of time it's not going to be easy. Just wait until everything works out for you, you'll be able to tell them that you were right, but until then, people will doubt you.

I have several smaller toons tht I like to go out and just have fun with. Most of them have leather - or the equivalent - and I will ususally 2 box them. And as you said, most of the old zones are pretty much empty these days. Which is why I don't really understand why anyone would know how you are equipped and be able to make rude comments.

As an aside, I was in Nadox the other night with my 50's level guys and got a tell from a 66 beastlord wanting to know if we could help him with the named in the Nautilus room - don't really know why he needed help - said we'd be glad to and ran into the tunnel from the campfire. He pulled the named and we took it down in less than a minute. He then annouces that he's in a "PL Mode" and wants to power level us. Duhhhh.

Why does everyone think that everyone wants to be power leveled??

Excuse me for bumping the thread - just had to get that off my chest I guess.

Have fun and Be Safe!!!!!!!

Maybe it's your server. People seem less rude and more eager to help complete strangers than ever before too me. I've thouroghly enjoyed the last couple months of play. I've gotten more accomplished than in the last several years.

I'd say good for you! I myself just got my wife playing eq about two months ago and we both have started about three diff characters together. I have my main, but when we started the new toons, we did the newbie quests together. It was a lot of fun to do those. Frustrating at times, but pretty fun and rewarding once we actually completed the quests. Granted we have become temperance crack heads, and we take handouts if someone gives us buffs, and I have given plat to the new toons.

Your idea of strictly "nontwink" sounds very enticing! I do believe though the whole non pok books does not sound very fun to me. LOL that's just me, I'm a post Luclin player so I guess I've never gone without POK. I think I would die without it along without temp.

First, I have to say this is one of the best posts I have ever seen started.

I have been playing for about two years now and completely understand what you are saying. When i first started playing, there was no one to help me, I didn't even know what a twink was. Now, 55 levels later and no twinkage, I have a better understanding and appreciation of the game.

I have twinked some of my toons afterwards but learned that there is no challenge in doing so. No challenge equals no fun I think. I really do enjoy doing the newbie armor quest.

Most of my toons now go without buffs or armor twinkage. I try to earn them myself, that is, except the occasional SOW.

I wish more people would take the time to learn their characters and forget about twinkage. The is nothing I hate more than grouping with a level 45 twinked out Cleric who has absolutely no idea what to do...........
