Are you sure she only did 226 DPS meleeing? Seems very low to me. With comparable weapons (Ritual Spinesplicer, Jagged Timeforged Blade) I had multiple 450+ DPS parses on M'Sha's, and I thought that was low.

well, they were both parses at 65.

I have aa's in endless quver and in AM. My criticl hits run in the 2500, as low as 900, and above. I have hit as hign as 32000, only 7 times, but cool when it happens. All in all I would have to say the ranger is not that bad of a toon to play.

I don't think anyone is saying a ranger is a bad class.....what I think people are saying is that in a group and in a raid rangers get shafted.............Rogs, Zerkers and Monks in High end all out DPS a ranger in sustained.....(warriors and wizards come damn close now as well.......thank god for DoN for wizzies =p) Burst DPS Wizards Rogs, mages, and zerkers all out DPS a ranger.................this makes a ranger a sub par class.................rangers are supposed to be a damned good sustained DPS class......and TBH atm they aren't......there are to many classes that pass rangers =/

True enough. Still, it's hard to be beat rangers on the utility front.

In my humble opinion; smart rangers realize that they do not carry the DPS crown, and act accordingly. I.e. by patch healing group members on raids to ease the pressure on clerics, snare-kite and/or rootpar kadds away from the raid (MPG raid trial with the 2 big Dragorn mobs springs to mind), etc. etc.

Sure enough: I liked to be considered as one of the top DPS players on raids, but when things don't go as smooth as they are supposed to, I felt pretty useless as a rogue.

Why?
Why do people wnat to play a ranger? Because we love them, and know what they can do. Nothing is more fun then a group of rangers kitting a mean old npc. It's a sight to be hold.

yeah rangers are fun! So what if there are classes that have a little better this or that? Does that mean that a character should only be able to contribute something only if he is THE BEST CLASS at it? People are timing and calculating to see exactly how many points per second over a blah blah blah blah!

What I know about a ranger on a scale of 1 to 10. I would have to rate myself around a ( 1) So why instead of all the wasted time telling every one how bad we are, just be happy with what your toon doing. What I would like to see is the ones who know the ranger give us tips on how we can better play are toons. For one I'm glade they hate us, because if they knew how great the ranger is, all we would have are rangers.Lets face it we do need the cleris and chanters, the rest we can do for are self. ):

For 4 years now i have had to stop playing EQ because of my parents, so the highest ive ever gotten was a lvl 45 ogre SK i created on Prexus 3 years ago. I have been on an off..... Its not my fault i can not play everyday for 3 hours plus at a time.

This is a pretty similar situation to the one I am in.

My advice: don't give advice about EQ unless you have thouroughly checked it. Hell, don't even give an OPINION. Unless you want to get into a losing arguement with the people that DO play 3 hours a day.

I am a 57 ranger. Last night I hit a crit with my bow (Blessed Faydark Thunderbolt) using serrated steel shaft arrows for 648. I'm sure there are others that can surpass that. I was using TS, FQ, 21% haste gloves, the mob was fleeing (so dbl dmg) and it was a crit, but the best i've done with Windblade under similar circumstances was a double hit for 2x295.

I'm not ready to give up my bow just yet.

Go download Yalp and parse yourself. Max hits are irrelevant. If my bow hit for 2000 once per day, it would still suck. Wait till you get your AA's, then hitting for 500 will be the norm, and not the exception.

hmmm time to switch sides for a bit >_>

Ok DPS wise rangers may not be in the top dps classes.....but what I will say is this......they offer utility......early lvls they can tank well....later lvls....they hold kiting agro better than any other class =p.........plus if you are looking for a melee DPS class group(TBH some groups work better melee than caster.....but shhhhh i didn't say that.....and this is comming from a wizard....a wizard that that thinks every other class is sub par and every group is crap with out me....=p) rangers offer good DPS with great utility..........Now I would almost worry about zerkers but their utility doesn't last long and their DPS is based purely on gear....though if you come across a well gear zerker you're boned....

FOr the most part a ranger will do really well in groups your ranger DPS is pretty good(and later on you melee DPS is pretty good) and your utility is very good.......don't count rangers out........It all depends on the type of group you want.....

As Friar pointed out, it's not a good way to judge DPS.

I did some extensive parsing when I was getting archery AAs for my ranger during the levels 59 - 61.

Before any archery AAs, with nightmare compound bow and summoned arrows, 41% haste, my ranger was doing about 40 dps.

With duel wielding 13/19 150DD proc and epic (41% haste), it was about 60-80dps.

With Windblade and 36% haste, it was about 80 - 110 dps.

With EQ/AM 1, Stonewood bow, 11 + 4 dmg arrow, 41% haste, archery damage started to come close with windblade dps.

It wasn't until EQ/AM2 archery became a worthwhile primary dps method.

Hmmm with 1200+ ATK, 36% worn haste, Shammy buffed, Celerity using a War Marshalls Bladed staff I tend to be about 50 DPS. (70 including the new nukes) The only explanation I can think of, is that I still do a lot of tanking, perhaps the attacking from the front, accounts for the 30 DPS disparity. I guess I need to let the warriors tank from now on. hehehehe

yeah, it was attacking from behind of the mob, with nuking too.

OK - I didn't finish reading all the thread - but I feel that I have to put my 2 cp's in on this.

My main is a 65 (as of last night) ranger who has been the main tank for our little family group since my warrior hit mid 50's and could no longer hold aggro. But his little brother, a mid level 40's ranger could not only hold aggro, but with his .5 sec snare regain it in a heartbeat should the cleric , or any one else, pull aggro off of him.

Our usual group consist of my wife, my sis-in-law, and myself all 2 boxing. The PC's as follows: Mine; level 65 Ranger and level 65 Druid, Wifes; level 65 Cleric and level 64 Druid, Sis-in-law; level 62 Enchanter and level 56 Bard. The bard is often repalced with a friends level 64 Magician.

At the moment we are camping the King in Droga - and doing qite well there. However, I am very aware of the weakness's that my Ranger has and I try to advoid situations that would put the group in a bind. It also helps that my wife plays her Cleric very well.

All the gear that the Ranger wears he has either won from mobs, or earned the plat to purchase them in the Bazaar.

No, he can't tank on raids in the planes - but then we don't try to go there and none of us has ever been on a raid - or wanted to go on one.

I think the main thing for all of to remember is that this is a game - something to gst enjoyment from. My ranger gives me a lot of enjoyment - he's fun to play. I also enjoy my other toons, but not as much.

I think it's also pertinanat that when asked, the rest of the group allways asks me to play the ranger instead of the warrior.

Be safe and have fun is sort of what it's all about.

EagleFlight/Dyciere - lvl 56 Warrior
/Trackyr - lvl 65 Ranger

It's sorta nice - they both started in Beta. They really know the game well, I got involved when I married into the family (so to speak). It took them awhile to talk me into this game as I really don't type very well. But, I wanted to do thigs with the wife - so I now have 3 accounts with 7 tradeskill mules and and 16 playing toons.

Oh, and the sis-in-law - who works for me - just looked at the post that I made and informed me that the enchanter leveled to 63 last night.

As an aside the 3 of us are all 60+ - I'm the oldest at 67.

Have fun and be safe.

i dont understand how parsing can give accurate information about a class in general...wouldnt that only tell you about the character you are clocking? how can it answer class vs class questions like that? when you are parsing, do you count DoT's? how do you account for the difference in arrow types? what about differences in stats that affect damage? archery skill?
