We already know we're the losers. Who are the winners? The standings so far (and you just know it isn't over yet).

Yantis

- Monk
- Druid
- Beastlord
- Necromancer
- Stratics

IGE

- Ranger
- Shaman
- Maybe Warrior
- Caster's Realm
- EQ Interface

Yantis and IGE are both item and plat for money sites. They are in the process of buying up the Everquest community sites. Within the past few days the main Druid, Beastlord, Ranger, Shaman and Necro sites all were sold to them, or at least partnered with them. Other sites like Caster's Realm sold out a while ago. Still others like GU Comics and Steel Warrior are said to be thinking on their offer. Some like Allakhazam, EQ Atlas and Graffs have admitted getting offers and turning them down.

Our community is under attack and nobody really seems to care. Most of those sites are still linked on the official site even, so obviously Sony doesn't care. Maybe I'm the only one bothered by it, but the thought of all the EQ Community sites being owned by what is essentially a couple Chinese Gaming Sweat Shops doesn't sit right by me.

Why is Yantis and IGE buying up all these sights? Why are all the sights selling, and what can be done about it? We still need the info, don't we? What's our alternative?

I have to admit I'm kind of worried about it too. As someone who runs a major fan site, I know how much time and effort and personal expense goes into a site and, as satisfying as it may be to run something, how much grief often comes back out sometimes. We got lucky and, because of our premium members, moved beyond the teneous doing it strictly because we love it stage to one where, yes we love it just as much, but we are also secure enough to be able to do what we want with it as well. Most internet sites never reach that stage.

Yantis and IGE are taking advantage of that. How many of you would truly be able to not give in if someone came up to you and offered you a year or two's wages for something you have been doing in your spare time for free or even at a loss and with lots of effort and aggravation?

It's really a sad state of affairs all around. I can't really blame the site owners for selling. Who in their right mind turns down that type of money? I also can't blame Yantis or IGE for doing what they are doing. They are just satisfying what the market demands. The fact they are allowed to get away with it is more of the problem really.

Geeze I realized I should follow that up. Yes we received an offer from Yantis. First he wanted to buy the site for a pretty large sum of money. When we turned him down, he offered to pay just as much to just run an ad on the site. We turned that down too. I'm not asking for a pat on the back. Nor do I compare our situation with any of the other sites. Like I said, our premium members are absolutely wonderful and we are happy with where we are right now financially. I just didn't want anyone thinking that was a prelude to us taking Yantis or IGE money. It won't happen.

I care, but aside from not going to said sites, there isn't much I can do about it. And since I never went to said sites to begin with... heh. At least Alla's and The Concert Hall are still Yantis free Smiley: smile

Aside from my guilds websites, Allakhazam's and Magecompendium are the only two I really visit.

The magecompendium has a very nice support base mainly because of the people that post there. Although the admins are very adamant about what gets posted there (outwarz kind of crap gets edited nearly immediately and ip's are banned asap) I have to give most of the credit on that site to the posters/contributors. Although the admins will display opinions and will disagree with people on the boards threads aren't deleted/edited due to disagreements (Smasharoo care to comment about the Safehouse from a couple years ago about something along these lines?).

Allakhazam's imo is the pinacle of EQ information. Although most of the information on this site is player submitted the backbone is Allakhazam, Illia, Danalog and the rest of the people running things. Although the message boards are informative and enjoyable (yes, I even enjoy the weirdo's out on left base Smiley: wink ) I still have to give the biggest kudo's to the crew running things.

Granted a business is a business regardless of what you try and call it. I'm just happy to be able to do my part in keeping this a IGE/Yantis free site for as long as Alla and crew are willing to keep it running.

I can't ******* belive that Sunmoon sold out the Rangers glade to the devil. Of all the class communities out there, I thought that one would be the last to go before the safehouse. And they got castersrealm too. Geez. This is a sad, sad day indeed. As a longtime anti-Yantis and anti-IGE activist, I feel betrayed that most of those community leaders sold out. Now MY IP, e-mail, and contact information is in the hands of at very least IGE. A situation I find most disturbing.

Allakhazam, have you ever considered starting dedicated class sub-pages? For instance maybe eqranger.allakhazam.com ? Same general layout as the main site, but with the quest, item, and zone information taylored for the ranger class, and class guides and skill trees more prominently displayed? With Illia's forum system, other than bandwidth I don't think setting up forums would be a problem, and there are definitly enough displaced old guard players of the bought out classes to provide content and or moderation. With the old class boards in existance, I don't thing the idea would have flown well in the past, but now I think it would not only go over well, it would be welcomed for at least a few of the classes with no clear alternative except ezboards.

I dunno, what do you think?

Funny thing Kaolian. I was just talking with Illia yesterday about possibly doing that. At the least, I think we will convert our strategy forums to the new forum software and add them to the index so people have that as an alternative.

Just to give some feedback to Kaolin's suggestion. I was thinking yesterday as I was reading the Shaman's Crucible boards that it would be nice if such a thing existed here. Now, I'm not exactly sure how the crucible became such a good site. I suppose it's just the dedicated people posting very good info... I would hope that it would work here if you did it.

As a daily reader I would be willing to pay the current subscription fee plus an additional fee to access specific class boards that I was interested in. I realize that there is a large reader base who has limited funds, but there is also a large adult user base that has a considerably larger amount of disposable income. Consolidating the information from multiple sites into one site I think would have the huge benefit of not having to ferret the information out from multiple sources.

I'm not suggestion making all information completely alla-carte, but rather allowing consolidated information to be disceminated from a highly reliable and respectable source. The reality is hosting a series of web servers, SQL servers, and internet connections is very expensive. If a consolidation effort were undertaken it would need to be fincially feasible.

Pay for content...it's a winning Internet e-commerce strategy. It's one I'm willing to pony up some cash for.

I am just finding out about this and am alittle upset because I used C realm quite often. I don't intend to visit it anymore but; I am now in search of a reliable site for class spell information (which spells are availible at certain levels and where to purchase them). I thank you in advance for any help and I will continue my own little boycott against them.

As far as the Ranger Glade Sunmoon didn't sell the site all he is doing is allowing an IGE ad on the site. He still maintains full controll.

read here

I support his decision in this. I may not be a fan of IGE or Yantis. But running a server and forums do cost money, and Sunmoon has been doing it for 4 years.

Reminds me of the furor over Lum "selling out" to Mythic. While I can't recall the exact wording, his response essentially was "When you start paying for my health insurance, you can dictate what I do"

Honestly I am neutral on people like Yantis. While selling plat may or may not be good for the game overall, I can see SOE allowing it unofficially if for no other reason than less headaches for them. People have been buying and selling gold and items for RL cash since UO (Hell, even before that), and having one "reputable" seller instead of a multitude of shady Ebayers means less customer service nightmares of "I paid him for XXX and he didn't give it to me!!". Not the best solution, but they aren't going to stop it either. Rock and hardplace and whatnot.

Websites are a ton of work and heartache, the possibility of getting compensated (REALLY compensated, not just pocket change) is not something to look down on. They created something of value, that they are willing to sell it is not something I would fault anyone for.

Having just read this and REALLY appreciating the information contained in the sites I frequent (with this being the primary site)... and appreciating the WORK that goes into maintaining such sites...

I have just signed up for my premium membership Smiley: yippee - hopefully enabling Alla to continue to provide excellent free resources for others.

Thanks - the only way for us to stay free is to support those who offer freedom! (I know that sounds bassackwards, but it's right on!)

I still have not signed up for premium yet, but I will be doing so next payday (still recovering from Christmas, hehe). This is the best fan site out there, and if the paying customers can make it even better, then I want to be in on it.

Also, I want an avatar.

Sorry, but he sold out. That's how it begins. I won't be going there anymore, it's against my principles.

As a beastlord, I would just like to add that the Beastlord Community itself has /not/ been purchased by Yantis. Only our old domain name. The community is /not/ the domain. We moved very quickly indeed, and are now up and running at http://www.beastlords.org. The main pillars of the community have all joined us, and over 600 people had already joined the forms, last I looked. It's probably much higher now. All beastlords please spread the word.

Allakhazam has already visitted us, and word is that Sony has been communicating with our forum admins as well, and that they consider our new domain the 'official' community site for Beastlords.

Just passing on the word.

Thanks!

This is turning into a good post for you isn't it Alla lol. I am already a premium member so no new subscription here. I could not survive without that equipment search. I admire you for not taking the money for a banner, I wouldn't make the same decision myself. I would in no way look down my nose at you if you had got the banner. If I said to my wife, you know that website I run.. well someone just offered me $50,000 to put a banner on it for the next year. No doubt, my wife would have that money spent before I ended the sentence. Does this make me a bad person? And just wondering can you say that IGE is Evil on your web page right above their banner?
#22 Jan 07 2004 at 2:36 PM Rating: Decent
I agree with Reinman, being in business myself it would be hard to pass up an offer to run a banner and I would totally understand. I am not sure how the premium memberships even cover all the execellent information that can not be found anywhere else.
#23 Jan 07 2004 at 3:27 PM Rating: Default
Class sub pages would be awesome. There are a lot of regulars here who know quite a bit about many, if not all, of the classes. I'm sure they would be well used.

Not exactly the same thing, but Saryrn Tavern has (had? I haven't looked for a while) a notice saying they did not agree with or condone the Yantis/IGE banners EZ Boards would slap on top of the forums. Since it's a free service, the mods get very little say in the matter but they tried to make it clear it was not their choice.

I don't go by EQDiva that much, but good for Kocha. Especially since I thought she was pretty much retired and it would have been kind of easy to "sell out" and close that chapter.

Caster's Realm is a dump anyway. They could have banner ads supporting Neo-Nazism and eating babies and it wouldn't make that site any less attractive to me.

Just wanted to say thank you to Alla, though I haven't got premium, I'll look into it now. Been here for 4 years and have never had a complaint (except changing the forums;P).
Way to go Allakhazam, you da man!

(Ps, everyone else too that is involved in the site/boards, I just knew that I wouldn't be able to remember all the names.)
