Im a blm on Quetzalcoatal server. I was wondering what order i should buy the staves in. From what I heard the Dark is first and this is second. It will be a while (if ever) before i could buy them all, so any help would be gladly appriciated ^^

The order I'd buy the Elemental Staves is this:
Dark Staff (MP recovered while healing+10 > all)
Ice Staff (most commonly used spell for magic bursts as BLM until the 70s, and lots of stuff is weak to ice)
Thunder Staff (strongest spell line, lots of stuff is weak to it like crabs, etc)
Fire Staff (fusion is somewhat common a SC, and a lot of stuff is weak to fire)
Wind Staff (Ice staff weakens wind spells by 10%)
Water Staff (raptors are weak to water spells, and Water III is the strongest Distortion MB spell for a while.)
Earth Staff (Toramas are weak to earth, and -20% damage is quite nice.)
Then get the rest they're nice.
rediculous

Maybe I'm wrong but when I compare damage casting Aero and Aero II with my BLM 51, with the ice staff on (Air Element +15 and Elemental Skill +10) vs. just equiping my Solid Wand (Lvl 32 HQ, Int+5, MND+5) casting with the Wand does about 10% more damage than casting with the Staff, despite the skill and element bonus on the staff. I'm pretty sure that the +15 on Wind Element is more for Def. purposes.

Now I'm wondering, is that extra 1 tick on INT better than an extra 10 in casting skill?

Any thoughts?

You've misunderstood the significance of these staves. You should really read through the forums to get a better understanding of why they're so good (See the Arcane Tome of DOOM). The "Air Element +15" on the staff is defense only. It has nothing to do with the damage bonus from the staff. As you know (I hope), wind is weak to ice. What you apparently are not aware of is the hidden effect on these staves. The NQ staves add 10% (15% for HQ) to the damage of that particular class of spells, in this case, ice based spells. Now seeing as wind is weak to ice, you are actually causing your wind based spells to do 10% less damage. As fas as INT vs. Elemental Magic Skill, there is no competition. Elemental Magic Skill is almost always going to be better than INT (except on low level mobs where you're not going to get resisted and thus don't need the EMS). Elemental Magic Skill doesn't add damage to the spells, it increases their accuracy or chance of sticking (not getting resisted). You should consider investing in the entire set of elemental staves and putting them into your macros. You have one of three choices: you can either unequip (via macros) your staff while casting wind based spells to prevent the 10% loss of damage, you can choose to leave it on and take the 10% hit but still receive the effect of the EMS+10, which will probably help more than hurt on high IT mobs or you can bite the bullet and fork over the money for the entire set of staves. Again, I would strongly suggest taking a look at the Arcane Tome of DOOM. It has a lot of interesting information that will help you get a better understanding of many aspects of playing BLM.

I bought mine a year ago, 300k. >.>
Quick Question
# Aug 19 2005 at 8:21 AM Rating: Decent
Carbuncle server

Quick thought,
ok for starters carby server sells this thing for 30k, while all the other staves are 150k and up. why is this, when ice bead runs roughly 400k? could it be that many people try to HQ with 30k failures?

another quick idea,
to the best of my knowledge this is not against the rules. Say my ls buys up 50 ice staffs at 30k, resells them for 150k, not totally overpricing them, but rather equaling out. I see two big perks for this, one downfall. perk one, we made 5x money, perk two, everyone who owns a ice staff now has 5x value of what it was worth. downfall, people looking to buy will have to pay the "normal" price, not terribly overpriced, but equal to the others of its class. hmmmm, thought.

Feedback appreciated^^

I wouldn't advise it. these are only 20k on fenrir (i got one out of bazzar for 10k) perhaps this is the cheapest staff to level on I am not a woodworker myself, But I would venture to say if you bought out the staffs you would end up keeping them. The supply may also go up if the HQ version is not for sale and Higher level crafters try to get the HQ version.

It's a good Staff for BLM, Elemental Skill +10 adding the AF Ele. skill gives a nice extra skill, and the +4 INT is a nice addiction.
As usual Fairy is the Expensive Server....
300k last week, but i got lucky, bought mine for 199k ^.^

Obviously i'm getting a dark staff first. then this. because affording and buying one of each staff is gonna be really hard. the +10 elemental skill is at least better than nothing durring battle if you cannot equip the right staff for each spell.

Note: /equip main "[element] Staff"
use this for all your elemental macros so you've always got the right staff equipped.
using the same macro twice like this will NOT unequip that staff.

Also note: the + to Int and the +15 resistance to Wind, this resistance helps resist SILENCE!!!! this just adds all the more for mages :)

LISTEN TO ME, ALL BLM, RDM, and SMN - ATTENTION.

Elemental staves reduce the resist ratio of spells of the same element. Next to +magic accuracy, INT looks like crap.

BLM, this is not your main weapon, your main weapon is the element staff of the nuke you're casting. Lots of people do Distortion, so get this one first along with your dark staff for resting MP and Aspir/Drain (cause those are dark spells, get it?).

RDM, use this to land Ice enfeebles, stick Paralyze on those goofy crabs!

SMN, use this to reduce the perp cost of Shiva by 2 mp/click!

Absolutely a godsend and worth every gil.

PS: This is so cheap because 100 woodworkers spam the hell out of the synth trying to make a +1 version that's worth 400k-1.2million depending on server. Ice Staff is, was, attempted the most becuase of a flood of Ice Ore from new NA garderners just learning to make ore, due to the inital popularity of the staff for the added stats and overuse of distortion LV.2's by exp parties.

Gotta save for mr. dark staff now which is 200k. It's so hard cause I'm cheap.

My brother is playing FF XI right now as we speak, and we're both on the Cerberus server. I also relized the prices heavily dropped. He JUST bought one not five minutes ago for 30K out of someone's bazaar, and he put it in HIS bazaar for 100K to show it off. As soon as he entered West Rounfare, a RDM in artifact armor bought it off of him! He's STILL dancing with joy! He went back to the SAME guy he bought it off of originally, and he had 4 more in there. Weird, since you can only make one, and are never allowed to again. He bought another one, and is now showing THIS one off. Justthought I'd share my story with ya.

Saw in the history of the AH on hades go like this:

100k
150k
40k
30k
25k
25k
25k
27k
28k
30k

What the bloody hell happened to make those staves drop so low? I do the math with the price of the beads and all, it still cost over 100k to make on my server... even if you farmed the bead yourself from the sapplings it would still cost you more than 30k... while everything went up, this went down by 70% overnight? I see on other servers it happened a while ago... What happened? All the other staves are above 100-150k, some up to 200k. With the best HQ rate ever you cant even make a profit by HQ to get back the loss from the NQ...

i'm not a woodworker, but can someone explain to me what happened to the price of these things? I don't understand o.O

The only thing i can think of is a lot of ppl probably trying to craft the aquilos staff for gil and selling off these ice staffs. Why the ice staff? cuz its probably the most popular elemental stave. (this is just my guess though, i really have no idea what im talking about.)

Hmmm. I would say the Dark Staff is, by far, the most popular.

At least on our server, Ice Beads are the cheapest of them all, ever since the info on growing Ice Ores became so popular. (Thank god only Ice and Dark Ores got affected.)

I agree that it is most likely a case of the price dropping of people selling cheap in an effort to craft the HQ Aquillo's.

You also have to look at what these staffs actually do, not just for a smn, but for a blm as well. Along with the -2 perpetuation and -3 HQ, I have heard stories from very high lvl blm's who have the complete HQ set. They say that the elemental strength was +10% NQ and +15% HQ. So you would use the Fire staff for Fire nukes, Ice for Ice, and so on.

I do agree that the 2 most popular staffs are Dark and Light staff though. Cause those are the only 2 you Need as a mage. Because, if your lvl 52 without those staffs (Especially for whm, blm, and smn), then that's pretty sad. : ) And the blm needs At least the Ice staff, cause of it's elemental skill and int+4.

So, the price drop comes from a lot of people HQing these and selling them fairly fast to high lvl mages. And they try to get rid of there NQ as much as possible. Look at the Amemet Mantle. Very good example. The staffs are harder to HQ, but the HQ are so much better, as far as percentages at higher lvl's. lvl 75 blm casting Thunder IV will be +15% stronger with the HQ staff. : )

(That is, if it is +15% for HQ. I'm almost positive it is, but I know for a fact that the NQ is +10%, and even that's not to bad if you think about it)

bought mine a month ago for 125K, sold it for 40K the other day...and i gotta say, after using it for a month, I HATE this staff...it's cool at 51, but then collect your BLM AF gear and watch how much INT bonus you lose...I got resisted left and right forever and tried coumtering it by spending as much as i could on +1 everything else to make up for it. It doesn't matter if you do 10% more damage on any spell if you only hit your spells 20% of the time. EXP'ing was a ***** with this staff, and if i'm soloing, i use a scythe... I gotta say, for the glamor these present, I felt like a total noob for ever wasting money on this staff...and twice as dumb that i bought a pluto staff >< cause that was worthless except for resting... Some things are cool to flash that you can afford, but these staves aren't worth the trouble they caused me. as a blm, i have to say, keep your INT high. it's far more effective, keeps MP efficient, and your battles end quicker. this is from a blm standpoint...reading below it may be a more effective tool for smn+shiva, but i don't know about that. so far light and dark staves are the only ones i see as worth it... i hear about pld's walking around clubbing **** to death with earth staves, but if i was a pld? sheesh, use a sword, you're not getting hit in the areas you farm anyway...but what do i know? no one ever listens to a mage :P

I always thought that it was Elemental Magic Skill that would reduce resists. At least that's what everyone says over in the Black Mage forum has to say...

This staff has it all. More damage (from the hidden effect and the +Int) and less resists. What's not to love?

Thanks for the info. I have the CC Cloak and with it's +2 INT and the Solid Wand +5, and 2 Eremites rings +2, am finally doing a decent job at killing mobs often without resistance. When I first went to Garlaige Citadel, it was noob-time. I had some decent +INT but everything was getting resisted.
[/Black][Black] I was just about to shell out money for this but you reminded me just how important plenty of INT is for a BLM.[/Black]
RE: drop
# Jan 06 2005 at 2:54 AM Rating: Decent
how do you loose INT when you get your af gear because you have this staff? the staff adds 4 INT, thats a respectable amount. having the staff does keeps your INT high. You say that you only light and dark staffs are the only ones worth it. Dark staff is very good from a healing standpoint, but that where it ends. it only adds +1 INT, while this adds four.

The thing was i was still a newbie, i only had 21k and he was selling each for 20k cuz he was getting rid of the game and only had about a fews hours left on his account.
