monastic

I was in an alliance of 8 people (3 needed coffer key) and we killed things in Davoi for hours and not one drop. We had 2 thfs level 60+. We went into Monastic Cavern for about 30 minutes and the keys started dropping. I definetly recommend killing Orcs in Monastic Cavern.

I waited a long time to get my Wizard's coat, especially consider I too a break for 1 year+. I went on three seperate coffer runs to try and get this with no luck. Being 75 I still wanted to comnplete the set, I went to monastic caverns to solo the mobs, and a friend said he'd come to help, 75MNK/THF. I waited by the Davoi zone into the next tier mobs. He killed the EP mobs on the way and got the key before he even made it to my camp spot

Then we found a coffer shortly after. Finally have the complete set. Now I need to get some AF2 :)

Peace~

Thanks to those who helped me get the key two nights ago. Had to wait until last night to actually get the coat. Just one more piece to go to have the full AF set for BLM.

A few months late in coming, but thank you so much for the link to the maps! Anything that makes coffer hunting any easier is a beautiful thing. :')

http://ffxi.blueelephantbrigade.com/maps.html

i use this site whenever coffer hunting and such.
shows what drops the keys and gives you a link at the bottom of the maps that spawn dots on the jpg's on the locations of coffers and chests. There's two separate links to click on (Tresure chest and Treasure Coffer) so you won't get confused at all.

Happy hunting.

Today, me and a 75mnk were killing orcs at davoi for 2++++++++ Hours, then we got bored and decided to kill Warlord so as we were going there he got agro, and Ding! the key dropped. I'm not sure if I just got lucky but I definately reccomend trying out Monastic Caverns instead...

I found the drop rate to be unpredictable. First trip included a 67 thf and we got one key in about 6 hrs (lost the lot ><).

2nd & 3rd trips no thf and no drops.

4th trip included a 50+ thf and we got 4 keys inside a few hours! Go figure. Wandered around looking for the coffer & was able to drop invis & warp without being hit! Just the hat to go...
Ridiculous
# May 06 2005 at 11:46 AM Rating: Decent
The coffer key for this wizards coat is ridiculous. went with a lvl 75 bst yesterday and camp for 2 hr, waste 20k on pet food and no drop. We met another party consisted of lvl 58 Blm and lvl 75 Thf with THF3. They have been hunting there for 8 freaking hours and still no drop. Wonder if i should try to go back again tonight...

You get the key in both locations. My Son just got his inside the Monastic Cave. We have yet to find the coffer. The key drops from the monsters in the back of the Monastic Cave.

kind of strange, or at least i though.

for three hours we hunted key.

then it dropped.

i ran into monastic from davoi knowing right were a chest was, a pt member had just seen it.

i ran to the chest and it was gone. i asked the guy standing near it if he had opened it. he said yes, about 15 seconds ago.

about the same time i got the key.

He's alluding to the thought process that a key will only drop after a chest is openned. Which we all know is not true.

Well, they key for this drops off of higher lvl orcs in Davoi, I doubt you will be doing this particular AF soon ^^ the wand is about the only thing you can do until you hit 50 to be able to activate the other quests.
Key drops

Mm'kay people, here's the deal with this key, I'm fairly sure it does NOT drop inside Monastic Cavern. I had a level 64 PLD that said that he EXPed there for a while and did not see a single key. The key does however drop from mobs in Davoi (it is known as the Davoi coffer key although the coffer only appears in Monastic Cavern), the following drop keys, 2 I have seen for myself:

*Orcish Dragoon
*Orcish Dreadnought (drop seen)
*Orcish Champion (drop seen)
*Orcish Farkiller

Kill these, and these only when hunting in Davoi for the coffer. My reccomendation is that after zoning into Davoi from Monastic Cavern on the island, turn to your right and camp right across the bridge, although once during our 2 hour camp there (in which we got 2 keys) an Orcish Dreadnought popped, but we just moved onto the bride to fight, and then took the Dreadnought. Overall, the key turned out to be fairly easy, even when our 75 THF left. Our members were:

*65 BRD
*52 WHM
*58 BLM (me)
*57 RNG
*75 WAR
*75 THF

We got our first key within the first 5 battles, which was given to the RNG because he had bribed the others, and later our THF had to go because it was 5 AM in Japan, but shortly after we killed an Orcish Champion and it gave me my key. We stayed together for another 10 minutes for the BRD to get 1.5 sword skill so they could learn Spirits Within, then disbanded and the WHM, BRD, and I went to Monastic Cavern. I ran ahead, my invis wore off, and got aggroed by 2 Orcish Dragoons before I could recast, then I died and deleveled, but the WHM raised me and I got my level back. While I was dead, the RNG opened his coffer and escaped, 30 minutes later I opened my own and warped like I'd never warped before! ^^ Good luck everyone!

Correction.... it does in fact drop in BOTH parts of monastic cavern near warlord. I went into the first area of monastic cavern to camp warlord for a while and brought my 58 blm brother with me in case a key dropped. Sure enough it did. Saw it with my own eyes and passed it with my own.... virtual... ah whatever, but yeah it does drop in monastic cavern.

this key was riddiculous....been camping for over 8 freaking hrs spanning over two trips to the Monastic Caverns, and not a single hint of a drop...SE really needs to tweak the rare/ex drops..i mean 8hrs of camping...not 1! drop...amazing...

and this was with a THF too...lvl 63

Shaman's cloak vs. AF

I can understand how -5 Enfeebling and +5 Elemental sounds like a good trade off, but in my opinion it really is not. As a 55 Taru BLM my nukes get resisted very little. With the +15 Elemental skill from the AF gloves and the fact that the most part of my nukes recently have been bursting freeze on distortion which gives me another +10 from my Ice staff I get max damage 95% of the time.

My enfeebles, however, are different. I usually have to cast poison 1-3 times to get it to stick, and my enfeeble skill (like every other BLM I've talked to) always trails behind my Dark and Elemental skills.

It's pretty much common knowledge, but some people comparing these three pieces might not know that skill only effects how well the spell sticks, not damage. Someone with 210 Elemental skill and 91INT will not nuke any harder than someone with 60 Elemental skill and 91INT.
I have a much harder time making my enfeebles stick than my nukes...I think the same can be said about most BLMs out there.

That's the major comparison between the items. Shaman's cloak has 5 Elemental skill where the Wizard's coat would have 5 Enfeeble...but then you also have:

+5 Vitality- Even though you shouldn't you will get hit. And I've had many occurences where my HP was deep into red, where this VIT could help very much.

+15 Defense- See above.

+16 MP- Every bit counts, 16MP is 6 more mp than the cost of an Aspir that could net you 50-100 more MP.

-7 EMNITY- VERY nice.

So I guess it's all about preference..
If you can't get your nukes to stick- go with the cloak
If your nukes aren't missing- go with the AF set.

AF coat and hat over Shaman's?? Well let's see. Combined stats on coat and hat:
def:58
MP+41
VIT+5
INT+4
lightning -10
Enfeebling +10
Enmity -7

Shaman's Cloak:
def: 43
MP+25
INT+4
Enfeebling +5
Elemental +5

Well i'd throw out the extra def b/c you shouldn't get hit, and the lightning is pretty useless, as is the VIT. The INT is the same. The Shaman's trades half the enfeebling for elemental skill, which is a big plus to me. The AF does have more MP which is nice. Then there's the biggest advantage to the AF: -emnity. If it weren't for that I'd say the Shaman's was hands down better (you'd be able to do more damage with it, and it's even lower level). But with the minus emnity you can spam more without taking hate, which lets you do a lot more damage. Soo.... who knows which one *really* let's you do more damage. As far as looks go, I think Shaman's is super sweet looking, but hey I know there's going to be tons of people on both sides so whichever you like, that's cool.
RE: Pimp
# Apr 30 2005 at 12:34 PM Rating: Default
Well first off, I don't see where you got the "Lightning -10" unless you were thinking of the "Wizard's Petasos" which would give "Lightning +10".
Something you didn't mention is that wearing "Shaman's Cloak" prevents you from wearing headgear so you lose out on the "Intelligence +3" you get from "Seer's Crown +1" so you will do less damage.
The only reason I would wear the "Shaman's Cloak" over the AF is if you really want your spells to land and want to do all you can to make sure they hit and don't care about taking the loss in Intelligence. The only other reason to wear it would be if you are level 56-57 in which case AF is not an option.

i have camped this TWICE now and both times, not one key.

1.) was just after the banishing wall...killing all the mobs that dropped it. was there for maybe 2 hours. not one single key. we left.

2.) got some friends together of mine to help me. camped the bridge just after the cavern. there about 2 hours again, NOTHING.

what is up with this key?!

My PT was all 60, we had no problem EXPing off the mobs, took 15 minutes to get key where we camped. Zone out of monastic cavern by the house, go to the island across the bridge and camp there. Coffer was close to the zone so I got it nice and painless.

I was in a pt 3 weeks ago and we got 5 keys in 4 hours. I lost lot on all.

got this key and chest within 15minutes of being in the place, then 2 kills later we got another cofer key for the other BLM (Santeria) in my LS.

completey lucky, considering an hour earlier we got a coffer key and chest within 15minutes for AF trousers.

RE: Coffer location
# Dec 08 2004 at 10:45 AM Rating: Decent
meh, i am a 60 BLM i have a Shaman's cloak, but it is not a "fantastic" alternative. you lose 16 MP, 5 VIT(which can help so you dont get 1 shoted haha), and -8 Enmity. especially with the 8 enmity, which is very good, i would choose AF body head set any day over shaman's cloak. the only thing is, shamans cloak does give you +5 elemental magic skill and +5 enfeebling magic skill, where as the set only gives you +10 enfeebling magic skill, and no elemental. not to mention the +15 DEF which is no biggy.

Killed mobs to drop keys by the middle island in Davoi last night (accessible through Monastic Caverns) with a small alliance of 8 for 3 hours. We got a ton of Testimonies for G5, but no keys. . .sad.

1. Is this coat worth getting? The only stat that really gets me excited is the enmity...
2. If it's not, any comments on good alternatives? Someone above posted vermillion cloak, but due to budget constraints and the fact that vermillion cloak's stats (other than refresh) are useless...

This item is attained through the Davoi Coffer. You'll have to go through the Monastic Cavern to find locations and mobs that will drop the keys. This is probably one of the biggest pain in the rear for ANY artifact armor. :\ It's pretty good for ten levels if you can't get your hands on a Vermillion Cloak.
