Event Related
  • The new “Ruins of Alzadaal” region has been added.
  • The following adjustments have been made to Besieged:
Changes to Besieged as a whole:
-After a beastman army retreats, the enemy forces in that army’s stronghold will immediately begin to increase. The enemy forces will increase very slowly at first, but will gradually increase at a faster rate.
-If the enemy forces are reduced to a certain point, the rate at which they increase will accelerate.
-The enemy forces will increase if a player is KO’d in a beastman stronghold.
Changes to the beastman strongholds:
-New sections have been added to the beastman strongholds.
-Notorious monsters have been added that will periodically increase the enemy forces in the beastman strongholds.
-Archaic mirrors will now be surrounded by defending beastmen.
-Archaic mirrors now appear more frequently and have much higher endurance. In accordance with this change, players will receive more Imperial Standing credits when trading an archaic mirror to an Imperial guard.
Changes to Besieged battles:
-If certain notorious monsters in the beastman strongholds have not been defeated, units will be added to the armies advancing on Al Zahbi that have special characteristics, such as units that perform particular actions or can only be defeated under certain conditions.
-New notorious monsters have been added to the armies advancing on Al Zahbi.
-The monsters of each army are now able to use new special abilities.
-The rate of Imperial defense reduction after Besieged battles has been adjusted.
-When an army retreats while advancing towards Al Zahbi, it will now be counted the same as a successful Besieged battle in Al Zahbi.
-A status icon will appear when you are participating in a Besieged battle.

  • The new mercenary ranks “Lance Corporal” and “Corporal” have been added. In accordance, a number of new items have been added to the list of goods that can be earned with Imperial Standing credits.
  • The following changes have been made to Assault:
Five new missions are available at the rank of Lance Corporal, and another five missions at the rank of Corporal.
When participating in an Assault mission with more than the minimum number of people, the penalty on the number of Assault Points earned per person has been decreased.
The number of Assault Points earned for each Assault mission has been adjusted to better reflect the level of difficulty.

  • The following features have been added to the Mog Locker:

Players can now expand their Mog Lockers to hold a maximum of 60 items.
By speaking to the Aht Urhgan NPC Fubruhn and completing the necessary procedures, players can use their Mog Lockers in all Mog houses and rent-a-rooms in Vana’diel.
*However, these procedures will shorten the length of a Mog Locker lease from 7 to 5 Earth days. A Mog Locker lease costs one Imperial bronze piece to renew. In addition, the remaining time on the current lease will be proportionately reduced.
*At any time, you can switch between being able to use the Mog Locker in only Al Zahbi and being able to use it in other areas. If you choose to limit your Mog Locker use to Al Zahbi, the restrictions imposed on the Mog Locker lease will no longer be in effect.

  • The following changes have been made to Al Zahbi and Aht Urhgan Whitegate:

-The chocobo stables in Al Zahbi have opened.
*However, the NPCs at the chocobo stables may be captured during Besieged, disabling chocobo use until their rescue.

-The following NPCs have been added to Aht Urhgan Whitegate:
An equipment storage NPC
A special event item storage NPC
A Pursuivant NPC to transport players to Brenner and Ballista matches
A weather forecast NPC

-The Aht Urhgan Whitegate NPC “Kaduru-Haidaru” has started a new service for regular patrons.

-When the Astral Candescence is taken by the beastmen, players will only be able to use the NPC Shihu-Danhu for transport to the areas around Jeuno once per Vana’diel day.

-The services of guild shops and other NPCs affiliated with certain captured NPCs will now be unavailable as long as the affiliated NPC is captured.

-The time it takes for a prisoner to return to Al Zahbi after being freed has been adjusted.

  • The following changes have been made to the Kokba Hostel:

-Interior decorations have been added to the hostel.
-A bard is now available to change the BGM inside the hostel.
*The BGM will change only for the player who selected the song from the bard.
-Players outside the Kokba Hostel will no longer be able to hear conversations using /say or emotes from inside the hostel.
*However, /shout will still be heard by players both inside and outside the hostel.
-The linkshell settings option has been removed from the entry options list.

  • The following new quests have been added for the blue mage, corsair, and puppetmaster jobs:

-Artifact quests -- Players will receive equipment specific to their jobs (artifact armor) by completing these quests.
-Limit break quests -- Players can raise their maximum level to 75 by completing the limit break quest for their job.
*The new limit break quests will only be made available after the player has completed all artifact quests for that job.

  • A number of new quests have been added to the Treasures of Aht Urhgan areas.
  • The quest “Totoroon’s Treasure Hunt” will now cover several more items and areas.
  • The “Sanction” status icon has been altered.
  • Players can now receive a new Lamian fang key by checking a “???” point in Caedarva Mire after each Conquest results tally.
  • The following changes have been made to Conflict (Ballista and Brenner):
Changes to both Ballista and Brenner:
-Players hit repeatedly with Stun will gradually develop a resistance to the ability. This resistance will decrease with time.
-The following changes have been made to the blue magic spell “Self-Destruct”:
The damage will be split among the number of players in the caster’s area of effect.
The caster will now retain a slightly greater amount of HP after casting Self-Destruct.

Changes to Brenner only:
The graphical effect that appears when a Flammen-Brenner consumes a Petra and recovers from damage has been altered.
  • An issue in which the “Warhorse Hoofprint” was not appearing for long periods of time has been fixed.

When a monster with accumulative magic resistance is hit by a magic attack, the amount of damage it receives will decrease in accordance with that monster's resistance. At the same time, its resistance will increase.

The monster's resistance will increase in accordance with the amount of damage incurred, but each monster has a maximum resistance level.

You can access Group 2 abilities by spending 1 point on the ability you wish to learn. Additional points spent on the same ability will shorten the recast time or enhance the effect (refer to the help text for each ability to learn the specific bonus).
Lowering the number of merit points in an ability to zero will cause it to disappear from your ability list.

my rant
# Aug 01 2006 at 3:53 AM Rating: Default
Some of the complaining here is just out of ignorance. However there are some complaints that even I still hold. One of them is not being able to fight anything solo unless it's a really weak monster (unless you're 75 with all the uber equipment and items). Then all that's left is going for you is jack and ****, but jack left town. Though this is where beast master comes in, you're still limited to what kinds of mobs you can fight and you are still getting **** for experience (till 35). I also get the feeling that SE tries to make it harder and harder for any of us to have fun. FFXI at most times seems like a drudge job instead of a fun game. What they need to do is make it so it is not so party based (on the exception of missions). Be able to ride your mid-full grown raised chocobo. Make it more Final Fantasy like, and not AD&D like. Equally cater to all customers, not just jp. Make more effort to stop RMT. Stop making it harder to earn gil (which causes RMT). Reduce the time it takes for NM's to spawn; 12-72 hours is just retarded. Have NM drops 100% instead of random. Support the game by creating a full documented account of all items, quests etc and even strategies instead of making us guess. Have the quest givers tell us where to go and what to do instead of making us guess. That's my rant. Oh and don't tell me to go play WoW. Been there done that, it's a pretty game but boring as hell. At least you can do PvP any time and anywhere.
Babies

Damn, we really are a bunch of babies. We complain and complain about every aspect of this game, myself included, but honestly, for Square's first attempt at an mmorg, Final Fantasy XI is a great effort. They're basically learning as they go along, as we all are and IMHO, doing a good job of learning from their mistakes. Updates come fairly regularly, its easy to... well, complain to them about things, and the price isn't a wallet killer. It feels like a lot of the complaints come from people that don't have time to get to those upper levels and those very sought after abilities. Well, guess what? You picked the wrong genre of games to play. MMORPG's are basically like having another life. They're meant to take an extraordinary amount of time to progress through. If you don't have that kind of time, either don't play or realize that there will be a gap between your development and a lot of other players and live with it. Will I ever be complaint free? Doubt it, but I can at least take a moment from time to time to appreciate what I've got and say thank you for the work-in-progress.
Bah Waste

Quote:
every time a low level gets a level up they get new stuff, they start to access more of the game, after a 75 has done everything, they cant just level up and get more, thats it, they need new challenges, new stuff, SE gives the 75's a few new abilities and spells, and if it doesnt do anything for someone, they complain about it. at least SE updates and adds this stuff for the game, i'm sure a lot of mmorpgs don't

we will all be able to get this stuff eventually, why complain about it??

for the record, i am not level 75

as for saying that 75's seem to be all stuck up or w/e, think thats cos they know what they mean, they have played this game all the way through, and they get challenged and complained about by everyone else

/rant off

Most of the skills added to samurai as far as ive checked would be most useful in a xp party, but you dont need xp in a pt if your 75 so i kind of see no point in any of these..

Xbox 360 Achievements Unveiled

The Xbox 360 Achievements have been unveiled and they are probably among the hardest Achievements on the 360. Being someone who's played FFXI for over 2 1/2 years, I still can't attest to having more than 5 of these achievements.

How ungrateful!!
# Jul 27 2006 at 4:54 AM Rating: Decent
I have heard little but whining from most who've posted here!! Those people at SE bust a gut to try and make your gameplay/time as enjoyable as they can but it never seems to be enough for most of you does it?? Look at the list of things they did this update, they worked damn hard on that! You should be thankful they do listen to complaints/suggestions and that they attempt to correct them. Everytime those poor programmers, etc come up with something they get moaned at by the spoiled brat, inconsiderate, ungracious ones! If you don't like it, go play another game!! Give the guys a break, they are doing their best in fact they are going out of their way to make the game as good as they can. Programming takes time to get right and it isn't helped by those who use 'illegal' programmes that can interfere with the running of things.

oh and for the record, I have no job above lvl 37 yet even though I have been playing for about 18 months because I like to try different things and because I spend a great deal of my time helping out other people when I can. the only jobs I haven't tried so far are the 3 new ones as I haven't got around to them yet and if I find a job doesn't suit me I go lvl something else instead of ******** about it, if I can't get a pty on the job I'm playing (DRK or DRG for instance) I go do some farming or team up with a friend of similar lvl and skill up/farm. My partner BTW has 3 jobs at lvl 75 and again he spends a lot of his time helping others out, he hates the elitist morons as much as I do.

It's about time you looked at all you have been given rather than complain about what you didn't get! You lot must be unbearable for your parents at Xmas/birthdays/etc....
How ungrateful!!

It's hard to enjoy something that requires teamwork when it's near impossible to get a team. That's like playing soccer 1-on-1.

After this update they added the Summerbreeze festival. I see they have the moogles selling the funky bikinis and such, but last year they sold the yukatas instead.

I bet we are gonna be waiting a while to find out!

New Bard Merits: Disappointing
# Jul 25 2006 at 1:41 PM Rating: Decent
Everything for bard seems to be geared to HNM, gods, Dynamis, hi-/uncapped BCNM/KSNM, etc.. There's nothing new to really have FUN with (ie.. FlareII on wild rabbit in East Ronfaure). I personally don't see any real use in a standard XP party setting. Assuming that the Job Abilities have a 1-3 minute duration, with 20 minute recast, you'd really need to sink all of your Group 2 merits into one ability to make it effective. These are my thoughts on use(uselessness) in a normal setting:

Adventurer's Dirge (decreases amount of enmity lost over time) - I guess if your tank has a hard time keeping hate, this would help. I've only had 1 party post-70 where hate control was an issue.

Foe Sirvente (decreases 1 member's enmity) - similar to Dirge, but to protect those mages/DD who spike hate, or 2-hour.

Nightingale (decreases song recast time 50%) - very effective for quick finales of high-buff mobs, or reapplying buffs after Dispelga moves, or lullabying multiple links/aggro. And the enmity generated by Mazurka every 30 seconds (vice 1 min) for those BRD's that like to tank. The long recast (20 min) and probable short duration (1-3 min) limits it in most situations. If you applied all Group 2 merits, you could cut down reuse time to 7:30, but that still leaves, at a minimum, a 4:30 gap without the abiltiy. Example: Finale (24 sec recast) cut in half by Nightingale (12 sec now); subtract 10 sec recast if you use all merits in Group 1 category (2 sec recast). If you were Hasted and subbed RDM for FastCast you could cast Finale again before the first one took effect (just kidding). That would be an extremely powerful combination, but you have now used all your Group 1 and Group 2 merits to do ONE thing exceptionally well, which has limited occasions for use.

Troubador (increase recast time of songs by 50% while increasing their effectiveness {percentage not stated}) - to me this is the most appealing although not knowing the exact amount of increase makes me hesitate. If it is a doubling like Soul Voice, it would be awesome to be able to basically 2-hr every 7:30 (after using all Group 2 merits). If its less than a 100% increase, it still would be effective in parties although I wonder how it would affect songs like Ballad. The recast penalty would only really affect songs like Finale and Lullaby, and party-songs when facing mobs that spam dispelga.

Raptor Mazurka (BRD mini-flee) - totally worthless to any 73+ BRD's. Can't think of a level capped area that is not considered a dungeon. Doesn't even stack with Chocobo. And now everyone 74+ will sub BRD so they can run around towns real fast. On a more serious note, it's really only a show piece for lower level bards since Mazurka wears as soon as you are hit/attack something. And I doubt many 37 BRD's are going to tank mobs using the hate-generating effect.

Each of these abilities/songs certainly have uses, and helps cement BRD as the desired support job, but there's nothing that jumps out at you as says "Gotta get that now!!" Disappointing.
FINALLY!!!!

People keep talking about this and if Ninja gets this spell well I will be shocked because they have not upgraded 2 spells for whitemage and redmage. I say to balance this, then whitemage and redmage should get the following:

Stoneskin II - also if used with Divine Seal it becomes Stoneskinga like Titan's blood pact
Blink II - also if used with Divine Seal it becomes Blinkga like Guarda's blood pact.

Ninja gets elemental level 3 spells, so it should be fair if this change appears then they have to adjust for others.
the update

i've only been playing since it was released for the PS2 in '04.. my highest job is 63rd. i, too, was looking forward to perhaps 1 ability/trait i could toy with. i'm not let down, however. in fact, what they've added has really stoked my hopes of reaching 75th. and don't give me the "Well you're 63rd, you're way closer than I am" spiel. i took an 'unexpected year off' in mid '05 and only just returned about a month ago. most of my old friends are 75ers now and not being able to stand with them doing what they do leaves me feeling <Too Weak>. i racked up 101 playtime days (w/o 24hr bazaaring) in that year.. and i was all of 62nd in 1 job to show for it. granted i should have managed my time a bit better. still, the point is it takes effort and luck. nothing is guaranteed.

phew... digress much?.. ahem.

as was said by someone earlier in this post, those that came before me had to work sooooooo much harder to reach 75th than is necessary today. i dont think some of you realize the xp that was necessary at the 60+ range per level. i remember the update that nerfed the xp per level and i dont know a single 75er who didnt feel they just got kicked in the stomach. this update is THEIR reward. seriously, sit back and imagine NOT being able to see a change to your character (save any gear switches) for YEARS... they hit the pinnacle, endgame. what now? now have a reason to really live again, and damn straight they are gonna explore those options.

don't blame Square for making you feel even smaller in the big picture. thank them for breathing life into someone's character who, instead of giving up the ghost and perhaps quitting, may just end up helping you out in the future. it's keeping my friends around. ^^

You can access Group 2 abilities by spending 1 point on the ability you wish to learn. Additional points spent on the same ability will shorten the recast time or enhance the effect (refer to the help text for each ability to learn the specific bonus).

am i the only one that has picked this up ? it says spending 1 point
and to spend it to give away or give it up which means
you give up a merit point BUT thats not true as it cost 3 merits points
so you have to spend 3 not 1 , which is a rip of specialy for Euro people
as there is that many on line during the Euro day time so getting merit
points is like sooo hard let alone 3

For Xbox 360 resolution just go in the dashboard and lower the res in system configuration it will lower the res of all game so you may need to change it again for other game but that's the way you can do it.

MP is 287 to cast Ancient II and it is a 1:30 recast time. At least it is for Freeze II.
