New Notorious Monsters and Battlefields!(07/19/2006)

In the upcoming version update, new notorious monsters and battlefields will be introduced into the Treasures of Aht Urhgan areas.
Also, certain monsters will soon possess an accumulative resistance to magic.

New Notorious Monsters

Now that everyone seems to be used to the new areas and enemies of the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion disc, a number of notorious monsters will be introduced in the next version update.

In addition, a new type of high notorious monster (HNM) will be added to the beastman strongholds.

Victory will not come easy when facing these new challenges!

New Battlefields

A number of new battlefields are scheduled for the Treasures of Aht Urhgan areas. You can attempt these battlefields by using Imperial Standing credits.

We have adjusted the system so that most players should be able to make an attempt once or twice a week with the Imperial Standing they earn, but players can enter the battlefield every day if they have enough credits. This should make the new battlefields more accessible than orb battles.

Accumulative Magic Resistance

Currently, a large number of players can team up to overpower the enemy in certain battles by hitting the enemy repeatedly with only elemental magic. This tactic has had an unbalancing effect on the game, and we decided a change was needed.

However, altering the effects of powerful magic spells would have a negative effect on black mages and other magic users. Rather than altering magic effects or strengthening monsters, we determined that the adjustment to solve this issue should be as small as possible in scope and affect other gameplay mechanics as little as possible.

Therefore, for the next update we have decided to implement an accumulative magic resistance effect for all monsters whose strength reads "impossible to gauge."

We have also made several other adjustments to minimize the effect of this change on black mages and other magic users. For example, a party fighting a notorious monster with one to two black mages will probably not notice the difference.

However, we have decided to give Bahamut in the quest "The Wyrmking Descends" and Diabolos in the quest "Waking Dreams" a stronger accumulative magic resistance than other notorious monsters.

-Types of Affected Magic Damage
When a notorious monster is repeatedly hit by the following types of magic, it will accumulatively build magic resistance:

Black magic (elemental), white magic (divine), ninjutsu, magical blood pact abilities, magical blue magic, magical weapon skills (e.g., Spirits Within and Red Lotus Blade), and certain job abilities (e.g., Chi Blast and Mijin Gakure)

-Resistance Fluctuation
When a monster with accumulative magic resistance is hit by a magic attack, the amount of damage it receives will decrease in accordance with that monster's resistance. At the same time, its resistance will increase.

The monster's resistance will increase in accordance with the amount of damage incurred, but each monster has a maximum resistance level.

In addition, the monster's resistance will decrease with time if it is not hit by any repeated magic attacks.

Hmm. Though it hopefully won't be too bad, I can't help but wonder how this will affect the RDM 2 hour. For instance, the only way I've ever heard of the BCNM50 "3, 2, 1..." being done (have to kill a bomb with 10000ish HP in one minute or it self destructs and kills everyone) is with 3 red mages using Chainspell > Fire II... and obviously, with 3 red mages spamming Fire II, it would build resistance fairly quickly. I'm sure there are other strategies for it, but that's the one I've always heard about, and so I'm just wondering if that will be possible anymore. I guess I'll just have to try and see the effects for myself.

Also, I read in a few posts about people saying that it would only build resistance for one element... the way I intrepreted it, it sounded like it would become resistant to the entire type of magic, as if your magic skill in that school of magic were decreasing. For example, spamming Fire II would cause a mob to become resistant to all types of elemental magic, rather than just the fire element, and then a white mage could cast Holy for full damage.

We'll just have to see, though.

I am looking forward to this update, now missions and seal NM fights won't be a pain in the *** for melee to get because of the common "BLM ONRY!" setup.
How is this update anything like the RNG update? Most RNGs seemed upset because they were spending more money to parse lower damage; in this update BLM damage is not being affected as SE officially announced they do not plan on nerfing it, ever.
BLMs should be looking forward to this, for the most part... the good BLMs will shine brighter, while the weak ones, who make BLMs look bad (and yes that is possible) and are causing the BLM overpopulation will ***** about the nerf and quit. Or, the weaker BLMs can adapt and actually develop some skills in their job. After all, girls only want boyfriends with great skills.
both ways

Yes I agree with whoever said this effect should go both ways to us and the NMs. There are mobs with manafront ability and do cast ancient magic.
Sigh

Glad i got diabolos a bit ago...didn't manaburn it but still..btw smn magic blood pacts only. As for people that think its a nerf..either you hnm ls sucks, or you suck...if the only way you get through this game is manaburn nm/hnm/bcnm/enm ect. then you need to quit..go cry for days because you have to acutally work for things now. Like DM I didn't manaburn it but did fine. Be realistic if your HNM shell cant win w/o -aga 3 spam you need new shell. Although, I do wonder how this will effect ENM60 for mages my only worry idk if it effects maat if it does sucks for RDM.
To clarify

This is how i explained it on bethegamer.com:

Also the new update will inculde a change to offensive magic. Many players (especially BLMs) are worried this will nerf them. This is not the case. Imagin a bucket and water (yes some of u know this is an analogy for plds and nins but ill show how this applies to the new update). Now for the update, wheneaver a spell is casted, it builds up resistance. Now lest say that the bucket has a hole in the bottom. Magic will be water thats added to the bucket. So resistance is how full the bucket is. Now 1 or 2 blms will find little to no resistance, because they only fill the bucket a little, and resistance goes out of the bucket by the time they cast another spell. But lets say your manaburning. This will start to put more water into the bucket then what comes out. Resistance builds and doesnt go out. So now manaburn parties will half to wait for the water to leak out or theyr magic will start to suck. Now this first of all only applies to NMs. And more spesificly NMs that are being won easily by manaburns. Battles like Snoll Tzar will prolly not be effected much because thats how the battles sapost to be faught. Ones like Fenrir will prolly have a greater resistance because theyr so easy to beat by spaming Levithan blood pact. (NOTE: SMNs are only being affected on blood pact spams. They astral flows will not be affected. And 1 or 2 will notice little differece. Also for DYnamise the statues die so fast they wont even have time to build resistance.) SO in short, these is a countermeasure to manaburn because SE has no intentions to nerf mages.

This also goes for 2hrs. Its just a way to stop people from winning certain battles with manaburn. With only 1 person usin NIN suiside itle still do the damage. Its when you do the same thing over and over with to many people.

I cant wait for this, and all the bi*tche$ that switched to blm cuz they do dmg will go back to there old jobs, or quit. All this manaburning sucks *** and its not the way to play the game, Im glad they are changing this as they already said they would before. Why is this ALL a SURPISE to you poeple??? Maybe black mages will finally open there eyes and say WOW i need to think now when I play... LOL newbs

lol newb, why are you crying about manaburn and blackmages. Manaburn is a perfect way to take advantage and make use of blackmages. Maybe one day you'll open your eyes and see that this is a game and people can do whatever they want, including manaburn because it is one way to play the game.

I'll say one thing then I'll let it go because we have beat the hell out of this dead horse. lmao! If this same thing happened to a melee job then they would be ********* e.g." All Impossible to gauge mobs' defense will increase over time as they are hit." The Melee would ***** like hell. The Blms have the right to complain. It takes a great deal of time to get to 75.

Just like the gimp that happened to Ranger. That was wrong. SE should increase the power of the other jobs. They should destroy a good one. If you do not want to hear people ***** then STFU and do not read this thread. They put the time in on their job. They can complain.

Although, We still have to see how severe the gimp will be. Time and patience will answer all these questions.

"If you don't like what I'm writing, don't read it".
That's such a stupid argument, that it doesn't even deserve any attention. People who seriously use it probrably belong on a short bus. All the jobs take time and effort to accomplish something. This one was obviously viewed as unbalanced. Do you know what that even means? Giving other jobs more power does not fix the problem. It worstens it and makes the game even easier. The blackmages can't complain because SE isn't setting their characters back. They're making a change and whatever accomplishments they've made can stay that way.

I don't even know why I'm explaining this to you. You'll probrably get red in the face and start flaming like an e-pansie.

First, learn how to spell. Secondly, if Blms are so unbalanced then why wait all this time to make the change. That is utter nonsense. When they nerf your main job after several years then People have the right to complain.

The melee and mages have a symbiotic relationship. When they are less Blm's around then people will complain about that.

Oh... The short bus comment. What are you about 6-7 years old? lol! I have not heard a childish statement like that in over 2 decades. Stick to the issue. Insignificant people like you do not bother me.

One difference between melee and magic...tell me ONE HNM that actually takes appreciable physical damage. BLMs can do uber damage even on the hardest HNMs. Make the other jobs stronger you say? They could have done that, but that would have just made mobs even easier...especially normal exp mobs and regular NMs. Last thing they want to do is take the challenge out of the game. As for RNG...I can't beleive people are STILL beating that horse. Why should RNGs have been able to get around the damage calculator the rest of the melee have to deal with? That wasn't a nerf...they fixed a glitch. RNG is still one of the strongest DDs if you actually know how to play it.

If your thinking about going to WOW heres some facts:
World of Warcraft, Blizzard's phenomenally successful fantasy MMOG, has once again come under the spotlight after a number of complaints from the game's online community. Players are venting their frustration about significant disruptions to their playing experience, characterized by lag spikes--long pauses in action when information ceases to flow between the game server and the user's computer--and seemingly random disconnects.

The issues, especially those surrounding lag, have been an ongoing problem for some months on selected European servers previously, but after work by Blizzard and its partners on identifying the issues, and some hardware upgrades, the matter seemed to have been resolved.

During further hardware upgrades at the end of June, ironically designed to increase realm performance and stability, the gremlins seem to have returned. After a planned period of extended downtime, stemming from the usual midweek maintenance window, players on some of the realms have since appeared to be suffering from performance glitches. Blizzard has opened a thread on the official forum to invite players to send feedback on the matter, in the hope that they can identify the source of the problem.

GameSpot UK asked Blizzard Europe for more information on the situation, but had received no response as of press time. However, an official statement from Blizzard indicated that customers will be given free game time as compensation for the unavailability of servers during the hardware transfer period. This will go some way to placate many of the users who are unable to play during the extended maintenance period, but it doesn't seem to address the problem of lag spikes and random disconnects that have plagued some servers since the end of June.

One possible solution to the problem, discovered by the community, may involve the IP address of the user. There has been no official response on whether or not this is a genuine fix, but word-of-mouth reports from a number of players seem to indicate it may have helped some people. One user commented that the biggest source of frustration for gamers continues to be a lack of timely information on the progress of the issues, and an online petition set up not long after the game's launch in Europe continues to attract signatures. Blizzard is currently attempting to gather more information from users on the issue in the hope of finding a solution.

The practice of real money trading, the exchange of in-game currency from a massively multiplayer online game for actual real-world money, is becoming a growing concern. No longer is it simply a concern of the publishers who operate these games; now the Japanese government is opening up its own investigation into the practice.

The Kyoto Shimbun reports that Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) intends to look into wrongdoing perpetrated in connection with online games and virtual currencies. METI has begun its survey by interviewing major, albeit unspecified, game manufacturers on the matter.

This action was triggered by the recent boom in real money trading and the use of unauthorized programs to tamper with data and/or automatically obtain large amounts of virtual currency or items. Particularly troubling to METI is the appearance of organized groups capable of committing fraudulent activities on a large scale, sometimes from overseas locations. In addition to conducting its own inquiries, METI is urging the industry to take appropriate damage control measures and establish self-regulation quickly.

Last month Square Enix banned 250 accounts for using third-party software to collect massive amounts of gil, the game's currency. The publisher removed 250 billion gil from the game's economy, warning that real money trading "will not be tolerated" in the game. Earlier this month, Electronic Arts removed 15 trillion gold from the Ultima Online economy and banned more than 180 accounts for taking advantage of an exploit in the game.

Personally, I am tired of SE seeing that one job is more powerful than others...and then nerfing it. Instead, why can't they be a little creative and strengthen the other jobs to where they CAN effectively be incorporated into strategies used to take these NMs down.

Heck, from what I know lots of HNMs have to be kited otherwise the tanks go down WAY to fast...this right there makes it impossible for melee to participate.

well this is nice lol maby when i come back to ffxi i can buy a weskit and restart blm since its "uberness"in ppls heads has gone down. think of this as good for blms since now your gear will be less ^^. im still sure a fully decked blm with hq staffs and ele skill gear + max merits wont see to much problems. or you can just toss out 2x as much nukes now to make the same dmg if it is gona be that drastic of dmg decrease. not like managing 800+ mp is challenging, and usually when i was on blm mp wasent an issue the hate was.
sigh
# Jul 22 2006 at 3:05 PM Rating: Default
As a taru BLM with roughly 1100 MP, i have plenty of MP trouble.
Tossing out 2x the nukes simply isn't possible. And i do believe (not sure, havn't played in about 2 months) That the nuke agro is set to the spells base damage, not the actual number that pops.

Correct me if i'm wrong on that last one.

In a normal party setting i nuke on MB's, and i nuke when the tanks provoke is up. This constantly makes my MP hover around 90~120 after the end of a pull.

Where as i do regen that MP fairly quick before the next mob is incoming, the max simply isn't high enough to make up for the damage lost with this up and coming update. Nuking 1~3 times more isn't an option.

Simply put, this does infact lower the overall damage of a black mage significantly.

In my opinion SE should NOT gimp any kind of 2hr cause thats just it ... your 2hr is your last line of Defence ... <some random SMN uses astral flow and targets some random NM in Dynamis ... Garuda uses Aero Blast ... some random NM takes 300 damage> yea thats total BS cause SE ahs stated MANY times Summoners will have and never have Damage calculators on thier damage ... and thats the trade mark of a SMN is their 2hrs ability to desimate a huge area of mobs.

Gimping 2hrs is an absolute destruction of that 2hr ... Gimping NIN 2hr id never understand why cause it sucks and ive never heard of any HNM LS grabbing 18+ NIN and making them go taliban on some HNMs *** but i have seen some screen shots of some NIN doing some massive damage to HNMs ... but i myself as a 75 NIN have only broken 1k damage on my 2hr to some random doll in sky.

I wish SE would really think about what they are saying b4 they put things out like this ... the information they have given us is only enough to speculate about whats going to happen ... and SE hasnt said that its going to be one type of elemetal magic, from the wording that is placed it seems like if you use ANY elemetal magic at all the mob will build resistance to that type of magic and i love to put words in SEs mouth by interpreting what they are saying but this is something i would like to see some Clear hard facts on. Other games have this system in them but they use a single elemtal spell like for example.

<some random BLM casts Thundaga III> <some radom NM takes 2154 damage>
<some next random BLM casts Thundaga III><some random NM takes 1700 damage>
This is what it seems that SE says about only 1-2 BLMs in a pt or allience.
if they follow what ive seen on other games about resists the damage would then begin to see a dramatic drop in out put by 1/4 first 1/2 the next 3/4 the next and then a almost total Resist to the spell.

And to all you people complaining about people only wanting to manabunr some NMs and only want to kill some NMs one way. well guess what ... think of the people on the reicving end of this gimp? SE wants us to only have ONE single party set up for doing HNMs ... which i feel is a really stupid thing. Im sorry but some people who play DD jobs just suck and all they do is complain about how people only want to do things this way or that way. well my responce to you people is GO LEVEL THE JOB AND SEE~!!! ... and yea that may be harsh but guess whats gonna happen next. "SEs next update" "We here at SE have seen many of the new stratagies on how some NMs are being taken down and feel it nessiary to give mobs resistance to repaeted phisical attacks. I.E. constant spamming of the same SCs and Weapon skills. It is now un fair to other jobs in the game and we only wish that all jobs have a fiar chance in HNM and end game shells."

yea think im nuts right well guess what ... the second some finds a new stratagy to kill something quickly and efficiently SE sees that as something that needs to be fixed ... i read a comment earlier about a few jobs need to stand out aove others in the way of damage and ability to desimate and solo. Yea whats next .. some group of DRKs gonna complain to SE that DRKs have no soloability on mobs that con DC or higher and then whats gonna happen a new gimp on NINs and THFs? or perhaps they make one job stronger and then other people complaine? then some other jobs are going to complain "well DDs can only do good damage cause they use that sub and SATA onto mobs and then SE will totally gimp that from people. SE oddly enough listens to feed back of their plaiers ... and oddly enough they change crap like this cause some few people get a hair up their *** about the fact that "well i cant do that much damage so they need to do something about that" and thus the that one job becomes un ballanced.

idk thats just my rambelings about some things ... yall people need to really think about this ... its not hard to level a mage job and some DD jobs are pretty easy to level if you are really good at what your doing ... all SE is trying to do here is get you to level multiple jobs and futher line their pockets with IGE's % from the people who buy gil lol.
SE should consider very careful before deploying...

Dont discount what SE does and do not over estimate the changes. One thing I have noticed about players is when SE makes changes, players cry and shout they nerf <insert job> here.

Let's get something straight, the game is fantasy but also they try to incorporate real world physics. Also, they try to curb down abuse of certain players in the game preventing others from obtaining items using certain jobs only, only certain groups obtaining stuff, etc. The latter being lower on the reasons of changes.

Nerf RNG - depending on distance range accuracy and range attack varies. Interesting, in real life this is true. The further from a target the less accurate but you can cause more damage and closer you are less damage because the projectile will not reach maximum velocity. And yes too far from target you begin to lose range acc/att both.

Nerf Ninja - Every shadow hit lowers the mob's enmity towards the ninja. This one is funny because think about it, you have shadows up, I swing 1 shadow down, swing again another, I am getting frustrated but at the same time I am thinking, "***** this I need to find the weakest link and work from there." Also, Ninja is a stealth fighter/thief - stealth being the key word. You want to be sneaky, not draw attention, and avoid stuff even if they are on to you. The idea here is the shadows lowers the mob's interest in you because you are suppose to be stealthy and hitting your shadows frustrates the mob into just ignoring you.

Nerf Beastmaster - When releasing mobs they despawn and respawn in their original area of patrol/grazing. This was done to lower MPKs from some bad people out there. This one change, that result affected BST ability to solo levels quickly. But BST adapted to this change and learn other ways to solo more efficiently. This is one where they should have use an if-clause in mobs, such as if-release command is issued the mob wanders back to area of origin and ignores all others.

Nerf Shield skill - Shield skill now absorbs partial damage when being hit. This is interesting because this too mimics real life. Shields were designed to lessen the damage but not completely negate unless the blow was weak. Various PLD and other who have capped or kept up their shield skills will admit that shield skill does help out but does not always 100% gaurantee or your money back. I personally, have noticed that my shield skill has saved me many times from not only regular hits but also WS from mobs playing as BST.

Now something to consider, if they were truly to make the game tougher, then something they have not added is breaking, wearing out, or damaging weapons and armor. Who knows, they might add a quest where certain weapons break you have to get them repaired. Personally, if they do this, I think you should break your AF1 weapon, do several quests to get parts to repair it. Then after repairing, the NPC says if you get me these items I will upgrade your AF1 to AF1+ where it boosts some stats. and abilities like when worn 2 hour ability is extend from 30 to 45 seconds, Benediction (the WHM in me) extends to an alliance or -ga spells like curaga. Also, the weapon becomes say lvl 60 to use or something.

Now something about this magic resistance is a problem to me. First off, I can understand the building up resistance in mobs but this too should be applied to US the players as well. If a mob spams paralyze or sleepga or something we (the players) should also build up resistance. If mobs build resistance than players should also build resistance HOWEVER my thoughts are the following:

6 spells of Fire - fire resistance build up quickly to fire nothing else
if you mix the spells around where not 1 element is constantly being used then the resistance build up to each individual element is slower.

So in layman terms, resistance build up should be on individual elements and not elements as a WHOLE. Also, if a mob is weak to a certain type of element, then the reverse effect, each additional same elemental spell should increase in damage not increase resistance/defense.

Where I also do see a problem is RDM soloing mobs; RDM depend on Magic and Melee to survive so this one change that SE better reconsider BEFORE deploying so quickly. Else you will have a lot of ANGRY RDMs.

Also, Dynamis, BCNM, ENM, etc areas, the mobs con as Impossible, so consider that too.

Changes to mob abilities should also apply to players as well, equality to mobs and players.
SE should consider very careful before deploying...

I can't edit my own post >.<.

Well, I was just thinking about the following Impossible to Gauge Mobs:

ShadowLord - 2 forms, more concerned about his 2nd form
Maat - BLM and RDM battles
Prime Avatars
Mission NMs that have multiple forms where its either physical only or magic only.

Like I have stated I support magic tolerance to elemental spells only if it is the specific elemental spell being used constantly. Casting Fire III over and over yeah there should be a resistance but not the entire elemental spectrum.

SE should consider very careful before deploying...

now, i'm only rdm65 but i have a fair idea of rdm soloing and i don't think they use much elemental magic in that. and even if they did, u read what SE said. they said it will barely affect u if there is 1 blm in the pt. so if there's only 1 rdm (less elemental magic use than blm) there probably won't be any difference at all unless u use chainspell thunderIII, thunderIII, thunderIII, etc. just thought i'd point that out. so no rdms should be seriously hurt by this.

although...i wonder if it'll affect maat fights...

<Hmmm.> Well I read all the responses to this so far and aside from a hefty karma trolling to anyone that said anything even remotely intelligent about this. I did notice one thing that annoyed me. In a couple posts people state that Ninjitsu lowers magic resistance. This is not true. Ninjitsu lowers elemental resistance. Most people only bother with it so that elemental magic spells will hit harder, I think that's where the misunderstanding comes in.

But there are other abilities that would benefit from from a Ninja using one of these spells. For example if a Nin were to use the spell that lowers fire resistance than someone using Burning Blade or Red Lotus Blade would do more damage.

Also it has been pointed out that this only effects the people that rely on the manaburn strategy for fighting NMs. One side benefit is that all the gilsellers in sky will have to go back and level up some new jobs before they can monoplize the hell out of the place.

Also whoever said and I

After reading this .. I'm quitting FFXI...

We are better off without you, you will not be missed. The reason. First your user name is Anonymous. Since we have no idea who you are we can't miss you. Secondly if your up a ready to quit just because you actually have to put together a strategy that doesn't involve 15 Blm and some tanks to take down an NM, well we don't need you. You are obviously one of those bandwagon blm and there are too many of your kind to begin with.

Just so you know SE's press release clearly states those WS's your talking about are Magical Damage. Basically you can not deal elemental damage without it being magical damage. Also apparently Chi Blast and Mijin Gakure fall under the umbrella of magical based damage, which makes me wonder because nerfing ninja 2hr seems pretty harsh.

If you quit because of this, then good freaking riddance.

"P.S Have fun trying to get DM, Diablos, Genbu, Faust, and kirin done! "

Hey, guess what! I beat DM 3 days ago with 2 blm's, 3 rdm's. Genbu can be beaten easily by 1 party if they know what their doing(and no, not a party of 5 blm's). Faust? Are you serious? Killed it many times with either 1 blm or none... Kirin? Can be done with less than 3 blm's. The only thing having more blm's did for the fights that person listed, like so many others, is just to make it easier and faster.

So you might actually have to THINK and come up with a strategy now? I feel so sorry for you. To me, that's the best part. Maybe now there will be more spots in the alliance for jobs like war, drg, sam, drk, and so on. You can't call this unfair, since it has been unfair this entire time towards blm's, so maybe now it'll be even.

The only people I feel sorry for might be mnk's, depending how bad this gets changed. But it's different for mnk's, since they are doing Chi Blast every 5 mins or so, so the effect wont be as bad as a NM getting hit with 10 of the same spells in 2 minutes.

Kalm down.

You could be getting all worked up of a small adjustment. How stupid are you going to feel then?
