Patcher Apology for Dial Up Users

There was a little problem with the patcher upgrade that caused some dial up users grief when trying to download the new patcher. The problem has now been fixed and Mythic President Mark Jacobs makes an apology. /cheer Mark Nobody's perfect and we'll be the first to admit it. Folks, Yesterday's patch day had it ups and downs. The patch went up and some of our servers went down. Given the size of the patch and the fact that we had made some changes to our patch system, this was not unexpected. Overall the patch day was a success, the patch is huge and things are moving along quite nicely. However, something totally unexpected did happen and we will, as always, admit when we fumble. Well, we fumbled. Here's the gist of the tale. When we improved our patching system after last month's version (due to the increased size of the patches that we are now creating) we added more servers as well as made some changes to our patch server that were intended to improve delivery of the patch to the players. Unfortunately, while the change worked great for some it had the unintended effect of making it more difficult for some modem users to download our patch (please note that this does not apply to the game just to the patcher, as they are totally different systems). When we tested this changes before, the effect was not noticeable. However, when you have over 160K people all trying to download the patch within a 24 hour period, the effect of scaling becomes quite noticeable and for some people, quite ugly. Also, because it didn't affect all modem (not cable modem) users the same it was even more difficult. Also, because this could also effect all users that had a inconsistent connection to our patchers, things got even more confusing. All in all, many users had a tougher time getting the game than others. By the evening hours things we had our normal crowds playing the game so for the vast majority of you, the problem did not affect you. We have identified and fixed the problem. Please accept our apologies for this mistake. While this is part of process of growing from a small community to a much larger one, that doesn't mean that we are happy with it nor with the problems that follow. We will continue to work to make DAoC the best MMORPG in the world and I hope you will continue to share in the experience with us. We have shown our commitment to that by the content updates that we have already done and by what is coming up in the next few months (more on this later). In the coming months you will see more content updates that could have easily been part of an expansion pack for DAoC but that we want to give back to the DAoC community as part of monthly updating process. We hope you will enjoy them. Mark
