News Bits - February 1, 2006

Two important bits of information to pass along, as seen on EQLive: ========================================== ** Notices ** - Purging old email In two weeks we will be conducting a purge of all in-game emails older than four months. If you wish to keep emails older than four months then please resend them to yourself. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. - Default User Interface We would like to remind everyone that we do not actively maintain the old user interface. If you are still using the older UI then it will have to be updated like any other custom UI when Prophecy of Ro is released on February 21st.

Put together your own UI
# Feb 08 2006 at 4:06 PM Rating: Decent
I'm seriously confused by all the anger about whatever change was made. Have any of you gone to eqinterface.com or one of the other sites that offer custom UIs as well as modified components?

All of this complaining is as easy to fix as creating a directory under uifiles called MyInterface, and dropping in the parts that you like.

There's almost nothing on my interface that's like the current interface or the one prior to that.

Don't like what htey did, just download one you like. The odds are that there are things out there that you'll like better than any standard EQ interface past or present.

just go to www.eqinterface.com and click on downloads.

I prefer downloading bits and pieces, but maybe an all in one interface is more to your liking...check it out, the UI is exremely flexible.

FYI, I looked around tonight for info on the UI types, and ran across posts for UIs that are virtually identical to the original UI. I hate it, but if you like that type of thing, search for classic UI...there are at least 3 that I saw.

No because I prefer a bare bones default one that they actively update for me without having to worry about every little variable they might add at any given time.

I don't wanna ***** with it.

Because you use a custom interface, I don't.

No, as I said I use bare bones default because I don't like to ***** with things therefore this is a rediculous suggestion. And the odds are I've already, and many people, already have what they like and want to stick with it.

I don't like either, because either is still a custom interface which I don't use yet you do and are still making the suggestion that people just shut up and use one like you do. And regardless of it "looking" like the original UI, there are tons of things that have been added therefore changing it from that original UI while at the same time making it more of a hassle to maintain and still try to make it look like the original UI. Bottom line is they are turning something that was basic and fine into just another DAoC clone, or whichever game you want to mention that shares the exact same look and models and gameplay and everything else with about 50 other games, to fool people into looking at the huge system reqs, the new jammed in models, and the oh-so-sh*tty reinvisioned zones and believing they are joining a game that stands on par with WoW so they can keep from being alienated from their stupid speaker headphone wearing teamspeaking player killing "pwningagexoring" AOLite idiot friends...

Make up your mind, do you want a barebones interface that's like it was in the good old days or do you want one that's actively updated?

I here ya. Copying files into a directory is hard

And you can download a barebones interface that looks like the old one and works. If the interface you love so much isn't worth 30 minutes of effort to restore it to all it's simple glory, then it must not be that great.

Sorry you dislike whatever it is you dislike, but solutions exist to give you EXACTLY what you want. Things change in life, and EQ does too.

And although your last paragraph is next to impossible to follow, I'll just say that I never mentioned any other games that it looks like, because I don't play them. But if you hate the game so much, quit. SoE has no more obligation to maintain the pre-sol UI than MS has to support the windows 3.1 interface.

I have no idea what your point was about speakerphones. It certainly doesn't have crap to do with EQ's UI.

The new UI sucks! The day they changed it, I logged in and saw that and was like wtf? SOE's tatics to try to update the game are boring. Fix the things that need to be fixed. For example on Prexus server, there is a bug that when you run through MPG to go to RSS you crash right around the RSS zoneline. Come on Sony take a step back and look at the real problems of the game. Fix the problems, not the accessories. And now they are not going to keep up with the old one. Sure sony, we'll accept your decisions. Don't ask us what we want, we don't have opinions.

The new UI for general use is much better than the original and very configurable, granted other 3rd party UI’s are prettier but I believe Sony has done a good job in offering a generic version that competes with the others.

*sigh*

Yeah, Microsoft is evil.

So when you build your game for Linux - remember not to charge anyone for all the work you put into making the game better (upgrades) and if you can keep your costs down while fielding support calls for all the previous versions AND your new 'improved' releases. Cause once you make the product, the consumer shouldnt have to pay you for your effort and time being put into the next improved version you built. If 35% of the MS OS's out there were not pirated, then honest people wouldnt have to pay $200 bucks to cover the costs of dishonest poeple who feel that MS intellectual properties should be free.

You dont like MS? Go use Linux.. I am sure someday someone will make a 'good' MMORPG for that OS.. or not.

You can fix that quite easily, and here's how:

Right click on either the title-bar or the chat-box of the window you want to change, go to "window" at the top, you'll get a submenu. Then go to "alpha", coming to a second sub-menu. Left click on either "normal" or "faded" level and turn both values to 100. Rinse and repeat on each window you want to change.
A sad waste!

The "current" NewUI sux!! I use the previous spell icons and the previous button bars as well as the target window. Sony is mentally challenged when it comes to these things. Sony expects people to blindly accept everything Sony comes up with as being akin to a voice from above....

Instead of fixing long standing bugs and problems, how many man hours were wasted on replacing a UI that was just fine as it was and needed only minor updates?

It's always amusing how sony panders to the players who will just bend over and take anything they force upon them. I never really liked the new/old UI because I prefered the small window in the middle of the original interface rather than full screen. And now, people who were forced to get used to the only UI they supported again will have to change it in order to play to a completely retarded looking one which should have been kept as a completely optional one only used in the stupid newbie tutorial. Here's hoping the new bank slots aren't part of the UI in the new expansion cus that's all I really give a crap about...

PS- Sony kind of reminds me of microsoft at times. Forcing people to upgrade to the newest forced OS either because of ignorance or they just jam it on all the new package comps. Then slowly weeding out the people who use their familiar windows first by charging 30+ bucks for their oh-so-useless tech support and then by cutting it off completely in a couple of years. Of course the main difference is sony doesn't have tech support to speak of.

You've got to be the exceptoin. The original interface was pure crap. Oh that one window was fine if you turned off virtually everything, but if you were in a guild, your choice was to turn of /GU or miss other info that was important. God help you if you got an important message in the middle of a fight.

Considering how many great mods there are on eqinterface, I don't see how you can't find one you like. If you want one window at the bottom of the screen....then just use one. Don't like the oclor of the window? CHANGE IT.

I left for a year, the interface was different. I went to eqinterface and rebuilt mine to look about the same as it did before.

Sheesh, some people just complain to complain.

apparantly... you've never heard of creating a new window. that way you don't miss chat.
RE: heh
# Feb 08 2006 at 3:53 PM Rating: Decent
The original interface that the person loved, had exactly one chat window in the middle of the bottom of the screen.

You may have been able to use multiple windows if you went to full screen, butthat was not what the person was referring to. What's more, back then if you went to full screen, you couldn't see some of the text (there was no changing the color of the window nor was there an ability to change the color of text).

There's not ifs ands or buts abou it, the current interface is far better than what we had 7 years ago. Hell, it's beter than what we had after luclin came out. I've used all the different revisions, and the current is at least as good as the last revision, and IMO clearly better than everything before that.

My only problem with the new UI is the horizontal hotkeys. I could get used to the rest of it, but the hotkeys just screwup everything, so I use the old one with some minor changes.
RE: UI
# Feb 05 2006 at 10:13 AM Rating: Decent
Another easy fix here. In the new UI you'll find that you have 8 or 10 sets of hotkeys, can't remember off hand. They're listed in the new EQ button. The first half of hotkeys are horizontal, and the last half are vertical, like the way they used to be. Just close out the default Hotkey1 window and switch to one of the vertical ones. Hope this helps.

Personally I use the previous UI and I don't care for the newest one because of the hot bars. I don't think Sony has ever heard the saying if it's not broke don't fix it. On the flip side they don't fix broken things.
RE: New UI
# Feb 06 2006 at 7:16 PM Rating: Decent
Aye, Sony philosophy:

If it ain't broke, let's improve it!

If it is broke . . . let's release a new expansion, then everyone will ignore what's broken, at least for a while.
