Darkhollow Loot Upgrades

Some information on upcoming loot upgrades for Depths of Darkhollow items, from EQLive: ===================================== Q&A on Depths of Darkhollow™ loot upgrades What were the thoughts behind the decision to retune the Depths of Darkhollow™ items? After Depths of Darkhollow launched, we saw a lot of feedback from players that non-raid loot rewards weren't appropriate for the difficulty of the content. Carefully evaluating the cases players brought up led us to audit the model that has been used for itemization for several expansions now. The old itemization model was based around the top end single group gear being roughly 50% of the stats of top end raid level gear. This worked fine when it was first implemented, but as stats have increased, so too has the gap between raiders and non-raiders. Since content is tuned with player power in mind, this has caused a growing gap in the difficulty of expansion zones, in turn leading to the problems players have been reporting. After a lot of evaluation on the potential impact, we decided to change the itemization model to bring single group gear closer to the level of raid attainable gear. Beyond providing more tangible upgrades in the expansion, this change should also have a number of positive effects on the game as a whole and is something we will continue to use when making items in the future. How many items did you change? These changes affect roughly 1000 items from the Depths of Darkhollow expansion. Does this retuning involve anything other than changing the items? Yes. In addition to looking at many of the expansion items, we also took a look at the difficulty of the zones and missions and made adjustments to provide a smoother progression of difficulty through the expansion. In many cases, lower level missions early in the expansion became a bit easier and higher level missions that are further into the expansion became a bit harder. If we have previously done a DoD mission and deleted the one-time completion reward, will we be able to get it again after it is upgraded? Yes. We changed the way the mission reward mechanic works so when you complete a mission it will now give you the completion reward again if you don't already have that item anywhere on your character (including in the bank). This will allow players who have previously done the missions to return to those missions and get the items again. Could you give a few examples of items that are being upgraded? Here are a few examples of items from different parts of the expansion. They are fairly representative of the overall changes we are making.

Needed upgrade...

Maybe I am the exception to the rule but I don't enjoy raiding 100% of the time. And I think it is nice to be able to do something worthwile outside of raiding.

The problem became that SOE didn't want to put any gear in that was better than the lower level plains gear. So once you had all your slots filled with the 120-130hp stuff if you were a non-raider you were pretty much done. It had become almost pointless to get the new expansions. "Oh gee.. another 120hp item.. great :p"

The fact is that the good raid stuff is still over 2x better than the non-raid stuff after the update. Someone posted about non-raiders crying... but it sounded more like they were the ones crying that other people could even get something halfway decent.

Just my 2cp...

Love this Expansion and Move

By far I think the last 2 expansions have been more geared towards "casual" player. Now I don't want to turn this into a raid versus casual discussion, but I will admit I am a casual player putting in roughly 30-50 hours a week into the game. I belong to a medium sized family guild that currently does not do alot of raid content. DoDH and DON provided myself and several other characters in the 60+ spectrum opportunities to equip ourselves that was par for the zones we were going to be exploring.

Personally, I have found most of the single group loot to be an upgrade from what I had obtained previosly, and I am very happy to see that Sony is going to be upgrading this loot just a touch more. So I think this is a great move and I applaud the change. From my standpoint, I think Sony is doing something about the content and is making is better for all. Yeah some of the stuff upsets me, but all in all the game is still really fun for me.

If it ain't for you.. find something else to play. After all it is just a game..

Why is it that someone always has to whine about this?
So just because you aren't level 70, because you don't grind like others, or don't invest the same amount of times as others, and thereby can't partake in the "high level" stuff, then everyone else shouldn't be able to either?

You just said you weren't level 70, what do you care then?
Either I missed something in my math class, or you're simply just speaking nonsense, but since when did 6 (a group) become equal to, let's say 72 (a full raid)?
Again just because a group of 6 people can't beat an event and get uber loot, then a raid of 72 people shouldn't either?

With your current mentality I hope it never falls in price, that way the people that actually invest some time to get where they are don't have to drag you along with them.

.. Okay, bad day, rant rant, I fecking hate whiners like this. If you don't like it, quit!

I see you had the time to reply, but did it Anon.

You probably play your char the same way, hiding.

Take off your skirt, put on some pants, and reply in full view and take the possible rebuttal, like I did.

But then, the 2.00 rating on your posts speak volumes for the quality of your responses.

The 3 items listed are unlikely to be upgrades for most 'uber-guild' people. Those items are very atainable if you are not in an 'uber-guild'. Also as Pogart said...those 3 items are just a sample out of 1000 items re-tuned.

How does being Level 70 mean you have an Uber Raiding guild? You mean, that when you do hit 70, you wont want this gear? And how is a group of players the same, in reality, the same as a guild? Bro, play the game a little more, become more familiar with the different expansions, and try to understand what a few things are, before you complain about a good thing. They could just as easily have nerfed the gear...what would you say then? Probably the same thing. Anyways, its just a game, with real people behind every character, remember that, and you will most likely have fun.

As I see it, there are around 1000 items they said they are going to change. I wouldn't base buying the expansion due to just seeing the couple of pieces that were examples. I too am not in an Uber-Raiding guild, but that didn't stop me from buying the expansion. There is a TON of new stuff you can do with it. The Monster Mission for one were a great upgrade IMHO. The MM's are also for almost all lvl of characters too. You can have 6 lvl 70's in the group and then have a lvl 45 as just one example. All lvl toons can benifit from this expansion. The loots from them aren't actually half bad for the time and effort you put into a MM.

This expansion I believe has almost sufficently been tailored to the non-uber non-raider gamer. The tasks/missions you go on for your DoD spells are set up for 1 group. Only thing I see for Raids to be used on are a few mobs in a couple zones.

All I am saying is don't base any ideas about buying this expansion off of personal beliefs that Sony is all about the Uber Raider. Casual gamers still have TONS of content and game play with this expansion.

Pogart, you do bring up some good points that I did not know and consider. As a casual player, I do not have the time to invest serious play time to discover all aspects of the game. That is why I'm on this site on a regular basis. It saves me lots of wasted game time but does not spoil the in-game experience.

Clapman added some good stuff too.

Thanks to both of you.

I finally joined a guild after a 2yr hiatus from guilds. Maybe things will be different this time.

You raise a good point Pogart. In my opinion, the last 3 expansions were geared toward the higher level non-raiding player as much if not more than the raiding guild. For example, 90% of the Depths of Darkhollow zones and content are accessible with one group. To my knowledge there is only one raid only zone and that is the demi-plane of blood. Every other zone is available to non-raiders.
Dragons of Norrath is very similar. There are basically 4 raid mobs, one of which is easily done with pick-up raids (some would argue that all but Vishimtar is easily done with a pick-up raid). The vast majority of Dragons is centered around one group missions. Only 10-20% of the missions require a raid. And most of those raid missions, the storyline progression ones I mean, need only 24 people. Not too difficult to round up on a Saturday or Sunday with casual gamers. If I remember correctly, there are only 3 42 person raids as well prior to the dragons themselves (Kessdona, Rikkukin, and Vishimtar).

Omens of War again is similar. The only real raiding guild type of content was Anguish and the MPG trials. There are a few other mobs in the Ruined City and Wall of Slaughter that require a raid to kill, but those are open zones where single group players can have a lot of fun as well.

I think Sony took the hint after Gates of Discord, which was about 70% raid oriented imo, and made sure that raid content was always mixed into the open access zones, leaving only 1 zone that was raid-only accessible. Personally I think that was very smart, as the casual player has access to the majority of the last 3 expansions. Much more bang for your buck so to speak.

I know this is kind of a hijack, hehe. So I'll finish with saying that I like the new item upgrades. Omens was the first zone to put out really solid group-accessible rewards from the MPG group trials. It seems now that DoD is following suit.
