Heh. You think this downtime is bad? I've barely noticed it, and I play every day. If you want some perspective, you should have played WoW for the first few months. (Maybe even now... I don't know. I refuse to play it anymore.) Or, have played Earth And Beyond for two years, only to have the servers get /shut down/. PERMANENTLY. Or have played Everquest on the Prexus server in 2003, when it melted down into a figurative pile of slag, and was down for almost two weeks.

Yeah. A few hours of downtime here and there is nothing. They'll get it fixed. In the meantime, there's better things to do than complain.

ummm no .... this is my life. why do i have to live by your standards and go outside. why do i have to ride a bike or go to the bar? because you said i should. im spending $15 a month for this game and i wanna play it. if you dont like to hear me complain about how i cant get on when i want to then dont read the forum.
Complaining??????
# Apr 27 2005 at 5:53 AM Rating: Decent
I have seen a lot of posts from people who feel angry because they cannot connect to the game...

Fortunately, there are posts from normal people who are not complaining permanently about the unability to connect to the game for whatever reason.

But, I just don't understand why you guys are so impatient when you cannot play to FFXI for an "extended period of time" as I read... It is like the game is making your entire life!
You know, there is a real life outside of this game and I am sure that you have things to do in the real life when the game is offline.

Don't make yourself ridiculous, grow up and get over it.

When I try to update the client software for FFXI my dialup disconnects every time I make it to the actual download progress bar, after POL checks the files...

Anyone else getting this problem?

Oh, and BTW. Shape up SE, I dont like not playing for extended periods of time. *miffed*

Here's a scenario. Let's say your local mail carrier has decided he doesn't like you for whatever reason, and starts throwing away all your credit card bills. Would you be telling your credit card company that not paying your bills is your fault for not somehow anticipating that your invoices would be tossed?

DDoS attacks are extremely difficult to deal with. Blocking IP addresses works only if the attacks continue to come from the same addresses all the time; a clever cracker will either have provisions for the same machines to be rotating IPs over time or move through a larger pool of compromised machines, stopping the use of a machine after it's been blocked. Blocking based on MAC addresses is not possible, as the MAC address of the ultimate originator is gone after you leave the local network layer. None of the other typical tricks to deal with *DOS attacks work in the face of persistent connections (e.g., online games) since they predominantly operate by keeping connections short and simple.

Look, people, I'm sure S-E is doing everything that can about this. They may not be losing money by refunding money for downtime (which, by the way, wouldn't be much of a refund by anyone's standards) but they're certainly getting a lot of bad press over this. If this keeps up much longer FFXI will become the poster boy of laggy and connection-troubled MMOGs, something S-E definitely does not want.

To gardeners: I'm sorry you're losing money. It really really sucks, I know. But please, direct your anger to the people actually responsible for this (that'd be the crackers... >.>)! Heck, if you absolutely need to complain, take it up with your local government representative and demand stronger legislation to combat attacks of this nature.

is this update really the one people are griping about?

come on its not like the uber update that basically rewrote every file, this one was only 5 file small. 5 Files!

took me all of about 1 minute to check, download, install. and im on PS2.

quit ******** start playin, have fun. if your not having fun, leave. no need to attempt to ruin it for everybody else, and besides, if those who aren't having fun but are still playing do leave, imagine the amount of time we'll have to wait to get the next update.. hmm, im betting considerably less. JMHO, of course

Genjimasa, if you're going to try to criticize someone else's grammar, you might want to ensure you don't make yourself look like an idiot in the process.

His sentence makes complete sense. Since AKA stands for "also known as", and USD stands for United States Dollar, the sentence expands to:

"also known as 'United States Dollar'"

Perfectly legitimate.

Now, let's take a look at your moronic post. It's filled with made-up words that expose how lazy and stupid you are. "UR" is NOT a word. If you're too lazy to type out "you're", then don't bother turning on your computer. As a matter of fact, do all of us a favor and take the power cord from your computer, wrap it around your neck, and then throw the computer off a high building.

In the year and a half I've been playing, If I was refunded the money I wasted because of downtime (be it expected, or unexpected) SE would owe me about... 4 bucks. (aka USD)

Year and a Half.

4 Bucks.

And yet, the measly welps as of late have the tendency to moan because they lost 20 cents due to downtime?

That, is why yo get rated down. Because you're complaining about a problem that you, yourself consciously partake in.

It's like shooting yourself in the foot (on purpose) with a gun and then blaming the gun manufacturer. You're the one that's pulling the trigger.

You want ******** rights, go play EnB for 2 years.

As a side note, I will not touch your 'karma.' I never touch it on these issues. It's a perspective based variable. No matter what I do or say, the opposing force is always going to seem as righteous and justified as I feel I am.

As usual, it's nice to see that nobody has faith in SE and POL when something goes wrong. I'm sure when they fix it, they'll just get a bunch of "about time"s instead of "Good job"s. Honestly, people, one day costs you about 43 cents. One hour costs almost 2 cents. Is wasting a buck really something to get so pissed off at POL about? I have also seen several posts saying their security sucks now... Yes, other sites have protected themselves from DDoS attacks, but all the info we have been given is that they are occuring, not on what scale, or how much difficulty it is really causing. For all we know, it could be the biggest DDoS attack ever launched, or the smallest. Maybe they are exploiting a small loophole in POL's networks. Do people complain that Windows has terrible security when some moron finds a bug and exploits it? (That's open to debate...) But when a virus emerges it is fixed as soon as possible. POL happens to need to repair its own servers. When it's back up, they will be even better, and we can go back to the way things were before these attacks started. People who say things like POL has "Poor maintenence, poor security, poor handling" could be right, but look at their track record for a moment. This is the first major security problem in almost 3 years of their service now. 3 years for somebody to find a loophole. That's definitely not "poor". As for maintenance, I don't see what the problem is... Only times the servers are down are when major problems are afoot or they are updating the game. If you expect to be able to play while they are changing the coding of the game, you're crazy. As for "poor handling," consider this: They are fixing their very servers here. Now, as they are repairing problems, do you expect them to use them to keep us updated? I agree that they should, but when the problem is in their hardware, I imagine it would be fairly hard to repair and post.

IMO, the only people who truly have a right to be pissed off at the downtime are gardeners, as they will likely have lost their crops.

Yes, I know the servers are up, Gillllberg, no need to keep up your reply spam.

I am a gardener, and after checking, I have lost some expensive crops. Again. It is party my fault, because I cut the time thin and didn't think that the servers would be down even though they have been alot lately.

The amount of money though, IMO, isn't a factor. It doesn't matter if it's $500 or 5 cents. It's the principle.

I'm sure they have the capabilitys to report the problems. They have a message when you are about to play that states what the problems are. Now, why is it that this can't simply be thrown onto the website? It's a 5 minute job, Literally, but it shows people that you are addressing the problem.

It doesn't matter how good it's been in the past. I've never encountered a MMORPG that has had this many problems over such a short space of time. But yes, up to now it has been brilliant.

I'm not saying SE is bad, i'm saying i'm diasappointed. I would expect this to happen on SWG or other MMORPG's, but not FFXI. I have always regarded FFXI as the single greatest online gaming service in existance, but unfortunatly, this has proved that they are only marginally better than the rest. It's no good being brilliant for a long time, then having a month where everything goes wrong. I'm sure it'll all be back to it's usuall best soon, but I can't help but feel that since the servers have been proved to be vunrable, it will only happen again.

It's SE job now to prove me wrong, and I truely hope they do.

Y'know, it's almost amusing reading a lot of the stuff people are saying on this post. Yes we realise POL is running slow (a friend of mine did get on earlier after updating! So no it's not completely down) and yes it is frustrating but look at it this way - FFXI has been running for what? 2 years now? Personally I have only been playing 9 months but in those 9 months there has never been a problem like this before. SE have done a great job so far in keeping the servers going at a constant playable rate. Yeah so what if for a few days the system is down? Big deal - not the end of the world! Ok, this whole 'hacker' attack thing - yeahit is plausable I mean this is exactly what hackers like to do - **** us all of and it's working. Actually you'll probably find the hacker is someone who got kicked off for gill selling or something and has nothing better to do with their sad little lives than get revenge. As for stopping the hacks, well I'm not a network/computer/hacker wizard so I can't comment on that. All I can say is that the way some people are talking on here you'd think it was a life or death situation. i mean come on - it s a GAME! As for the whole paying for service stuff, yeah if the system was down for like a couple of weeks then yes, I would expect some compensation but this afternoon (it was working this morning) is the ONLY time in 9 months I've never been able to log on so I ain't gonna scream like crazy about it. Thanks.

I do agree with you somewhat. But in my situation I just got the game on Friday. I had problems installing in the first place and then when I finally got it installed I went through 14 hours of updates. I didn't get to play this game until Sunday afternoon. So after 2.5 days of headaches and frustration, I finally get the game working and I still can't play it. The Sunday afternoon that I did play, I at least got my monk to lvl 6. I played for a little bit last night, got up to lvl 7, died, back to lvl 6.

But the frustration alone is enough to get crazy about. People sue for a hell of a lot less and WIN a hell of a lot more than pennies a day. I am not one for frivolous lawsuits but Square, PlayOnline, who-the-hell-ever is lucky I am not like that. All I need is one episode of documented craziness and a psychologist and I could probably get millions. IMAGINE THAT! What's the number for 911? I think I am hallucinating or having an episode. I need to be restrained. Officer please fill out that report properly for my lawyer to see.

Frivolous lawsuits! The real American way!

The odd day here and there is acceptable.

The odd server crash is acceptable.

It happens. They are, after all, just human.

However, one whole month of constant problems due to SE's poor handling of what should have been a relativly average situation is not acceptable.

And why should I leave? Why should anyone leave? We've invested alot of time into this game. Some, like me, over a year, maybe even two. While money is still being drawn from my bank account, I expect to recieve a service. Is that too much to ask? No. It isn't.
