EverQuest Year in Review

Robert Pfister, an EverQuest producer, posted this 2004 year in review: ------------------------------------ What a year EverQuest has had. 2004 brought many changes to EverQuest. New content, new features, 2 new expansions, hundreds of community requested features, the first Community Summit, a Fan Faire in New Orleans and Las Vegas as well as thousands and thousands of hours of enjoyment for hundreds of thousands of EQ fans. A new Graphics Engine was launched allowing our artists to use new tools when building zones and NPCs. Zones were revamped to add some new life to older areas, new Adventure zones were added to keep small group gameplay fresh. We are quite proud of all that we accomplished but we are not sitting back and resting. EverQuest in 2005 will continue to expand with more of what you have come to expect and appreciate from the game we all enjoy. While EverQuest will soon be 6 years young, it is aging well and still setting standards in the industry. A new expansion, EverQuest®: Dragons of Norrath™, has been announced which opens an area that has long been on the maps of Norrath but not yet available. We are adding new tradeskill recipes, new features that ease communication and gameplay. You will see the continued addition of new NPCs and Zones modeled to make use of our New Graphics Engine and will bring a new quality standard to EQ art. In the coming weeks you will see more of the improvements as screenshots and movies are released for the upcoming EverQuest: Dragons of Norrath launch. We have announced that we are re-envisioning classes in EverQuest, which in itself is a huge undertaking. We are looking at each class and what roles they fill in groups, followed by raids. Our goal is to make certain that each class has a desirable role to play when grouped and while raiding. We will have a series of developer chats to discuss our plans and our findings as we gather and collate all the additional data the servers are currently mining and we will share any conclusions we come to at the appropriate times. There will be ongoing discussion threads on the EQ forums (Eqforums.station.sony.com) and we encourage you to take part in them. We are aware that with the recent release of new MMO's that some of our fans have moved on and we wish them the best of luck. We have noted that this has had an impact on some server populations, most noticeably our PVP servers. The PvP community has asked that we further explore the idea of server mergers and to that end, we’ve put a poll for PvP players asking if servers were to be merged, which rule set they would most like to play under. More details for you on that soon. Although we are satisfied with the current population of most other servers, we will take a look at each after the release of EverQuest: Dragons of Norrath and identify whether any additional mergers will be needed. We do have another Fan Faire planned for June in Las Vegas and again hope to meet many of you there. We enjoy meeting you in person and sharing our mutual passion for this world of Norrath. We also have begun planning for two community summits this year, one in conjunction with the June Fan Faire and one tentatively planned for the fall. We are quite proud of what was accomplished in our first summit and our goal is continue the feedback process with the community leaders. We plan to have representatives for raiding players, non-raiding players and each class in attendance. This will provide a solid cross section of the EQ community to share ideas and discuss concerns with. Of course this is only what comes to mind now, we have other projects in the works and will continue to expand this little world we share. We want Norrath to be a living vibrant world for years to come and with the team we have here, partnered with your passion and feedback, we are sure we can accomplish that goal. Thanks for playing! Decline

Just revisiting after leaving EQ about 6 months ago. Sad to see the decline but the signs have been there for a year or more.
My solutions would be:
1. Servers Merge of course
2. Get rid of Bazaar and and cut down on the Transporting Books.
3. Ditch Ldon quests and get everyone back on the streets..:)
4. Get rid of the platt cheats and get the economy back on track...
5. Stop making everything so bloody easy...ie all classes are nearly the same and the Exp modifers are to high.
6. Completely rid SOE of current team and get new blood in..(Maybe with some player input).

Im afraid World Of Warcraft appears the way forward at this time and I cannot believe SOE let them in front.

Safe all

I see a lot of posts about XP gain. if Soney would take the time to develope a few zones where classes could go to solo/group from 50-60 i believe that would be a large improvement. I have taken toons from 1-45/50 in around 2-3 weeks, usualy pretty easy. Then at 50 it's like you hit a wall. no where to solo, no groups want you. you are either to high or too low.

I see many good players get frustrated and struggle for a time. soon they park that toon and start a new one. I believe it is that crutial area that causes people to stop having fun with the game, as anyone who makes it past that point is usually so annoyed with being stuck there forever that they don't want to go back and help anyone else who might still be stuck.

To summarize my ramblings. Give us a zone or 2 to solo in from 50-60 so people don't lose interest as easy.
PLEASE keep playing!!!

HOPE ON TARREW MARR
# Jan 23 2005 at 11:27 AM Rating: Decent
Howdy,
Since my son is on my pc playing in Plane of Innovation atm, I on my wife's computer and call me noob but I for some reason cant log onto my premium here on Alla. Those that know me my name is Dryake Skylancer on the Tarrew Marr Server.
Everquest has gone in many directions good and bad over the years and for the longest time the main dynamic and encouragement to most players was to progress to the high end raids and zones. It took months of playing if not years to develop your charachter till a High End Raiding Guild would notice you and shoot you an invite. Then you were able to get those nice items often linked in the game, and you could go and see those far off lands.
It was common to see some people in those high end guilds take long breaks from the game or sometimes even quit EQ. Not solely due to EQ and their patches or class differentials but because they had gotten burned out from Raiding round the clock....from being told what they needed to do and when they needed to do it. The game was no longer fun when forced to do whats in the best interest of the guild and put their friends outside the guild on hold.
EQ2 brought a new start for several of those people. They were all Noob's again and they did not have to serve the tedious roles they once did in those near daily raids.
So yes several have left the game from Tarrew Marr and it did seem discouraging (but expected). There is still hope though. Tarrew Marr is far from dead and even some of the high end guilds are alive and kicking in exceptional form.
I am not from a high end guild. Nor am I from a guild that Raids all the time (although lately it seems we have). We are a family orientated guild in the aspects that we stick together and group together and sometimes sit in POK doing Tradeskills just shooting the breeze. So many of our charachters are well beyond 65 but we had never quite had the man power to attempt even plannar progressions in full.
There are several other guilds that have a similar mindset on TM Great Guilds but just not enough people to get the job done.
Now Many will say why not just merge. I wish it was that simple. Most guilds have Deep Deep Roots in this game and would never give up their Guild Tag for a Merged one. I also feel why should they have to. So we tried something which isnt unique....but its growing incredibly.
Currently there is an Alliance in Tarrew Marr that is growing like no other. Unlike the old backflag alliances this alliance is one to start up. So far its been a great Success. We currently have 4 Guilds with 3 more highly interested. The Goal is that everyone can stay in their family style guild amongst their friends with their guild tag......and through the alliance we can progress through the Planes and then on to GoD, then Omens.
The Planes of Power do not offer quite as nice items as do the Newer expansions, yet it is more of a hidden push to be elementally flagged. Something that stems amongst all of the guilds from years of being left behind.

So I would have to say I am very happy with my servers current status. Anything is possible and for those of us who have the RL issues to deal with but love to get on game in a guild "where everybody knows your name" Everquest is still alive and kicking. Especially since between the 4 Guilds we are averaging a grand total of 140 active players throughout each week. Not Alts, not the guy that logs on once per month....no 140 people that log on for a few hours at least each week. The Alliance chat channel is commonly 15-30 people a day with the highest nightly total being 40 (thats not including some who disable the channel from time to time to avoid misc. chat).
So from my experiences, yes the server has shrunk some but not enough for me to really care. I have all of my friends, Guildmates and Allied Guildmates still going strong and together we still can do most anything. We are also growing every day.

Just my experiences and motivation.

Very excellant post. I myself am a GL on Kane Bayle. I have a small guild that is way family oriented. We also have been asked to merge due to we have high lvl players but I have said no and the guild agrees. We love our tag and want to keep it that way. Now if Sony could just make an Alliace chat and maybe even an Alliance guild management board, that might work. Then, when a guild agreed about an alliance, then the GL could actually go and Alliance Invite that GL of that said guild. Then they would show up as an alliance. The guild management board would list the guilds that were allied and if you wanted to look at who in that guild was online, then you would be able to. Also there would be an alliance channel where all that were allied could chat just like in guild. Would make it easy, and thus keeping guild tags the way they should be.

what exactly, is stopping you from making an alliance channel and an alliance website for all those interested to tune-in to?

Guilds do it all the time. Do they always work out? No.

Although this maybe a less than perfect speech, here goes...

I joined EQ in May 2001. Velious was still the hot expansion, and life for a newbie was good. I hear many of you saying the same things I have been thinking. However, I can't believe that you would think that EQ would always be the same....

You must understand that EQ, when I joined, was not even the EQ it was the year before. EverQuest is an organic experience, and for a time it was the only Online Oasis. A perfect little world where most of us were long time fans of the fantasy genre and the world of Norath was not just what it was, but it was what we could make of it with our own stories and imaginations.

Back then it was Flowing Thought not Mana Regeneration, and Aura of Battle and not Attack 10 and Regeneration 2. People had respect for the game. Now I know that sounds like you Grandfather speaking (though I am not nearly that old), but it’s realy not too far from the truth.

It use to be you had to take a boat to some far off land now you click a book, but things change.

I think the question you have to ask your self is; why do I play EQ?

So why do you play? Is it for loot, plat, or to out-uber everyone else; or is it because you enjoy playing with other chars rather than playing with yourself? Should the game be easy? Should Exp be given to us? I don’t think so, but some of the posts I have read in this thread seem to suggest that.

Everquest is only as good as; first the players, and second the content. So maybe we as players need to re-evaluate why we want to be part of EQ. The servers are empty because of US, the players that are leaving.

I am not trying to say that there is only one thing that attributes to the vacancies on some servers, but people are bound to leave, and just as EQ grew, it is bound to shrink, and who knows maybe grow again.

I don’t have all the answers. I can’t even claim to have most of them. I am just another player who is voicing their opinion and trying to share my views with the members of the community who have chosen/will choose to read this thread. Don’t be so quick to point fingers. The content is there, the quests are there, and there are still good people playing EQ.

Have you tried WoW the “hottest new game”? Well guess what, it’s the same old song and dance you solo and quest until you get to lvl 20 then guess what? You GRIND. That’s what RPG’s are.

I think if anything we should keep after SoE for content and story lines, perhaps some solo quests would help as well, and always ask them to improve the stuff that sucks, but what really makes this game more than a bunch of polygons, textures and text is YOU and ME and all the rest of the people who play this game.

Maybe it’s time you look at what you can do to make EQ a better place rather than just flaming off.

Have you tried WoW. I don't think you have, because questing and extremely appropriate rewards dont end at 20. Wanna grind...go for it, your loss. I have a 33 Hunter and I have a full quest log...some of which are too high for me to even accomplishment.

Say what you will about WoW...but it doesn't have to be the "same old grind."

It is, only if you want it to be.

I have played EQ for several years now. I have multiple characters, all on Tribunal , and my main is a level 70 paladin that i poured my heart and soul into for a long time to get him to where he is at now. This includes 260+ AA's , time keyed, VT keyed, KT flagged , VP keyed and many more accomplishments. At this point in time, i feel its all for naught.
There is little fun to be had at lower levels due to lack of groups. There is little fun to be had at higher levels , in part due to lack of groups (altho easier to find at 70 then 24) but also because *The Grind* is just too much to bear anymore. Omens was a bungle and forced everyone 65+ that still want to make decent progression into 4-5 zones. Thats it. You dont make exp elsewhere. To gain one AA , one can spend a few hours in MPG, or all day in , say , BoT - or PoEarth , or Barindu . Sony renders its own content useless. With the severe loss of people on ALL servers , it has become increasingly difficult for anyone to make any progress at all. This , combined with the fact that EQ never was a *fast leveling* game has turned it into a barren wasteland. And it is a shame. I love EQ and its realms. I love that there is so much content. But there is no way people can enjoy it all when so many factors stack against them.

We all know classes need to be more balanced. We all know that grouping has become an increasingly difficult issue to deal with. Sony should consider revamping its exp gain , solo-play ability and quest functions.

If things weren't so hard to accomplish on your own , or if certain drops didnt take Forever to get , people might be more inclined to actually log on and play , group or no group. The trick is to entice the individual to play . if you can get one single person to provide fun for themselves while logged in , without being so dependant on a cleric or a tank, more people would be inclined to log on again and actually play. This boosts server population , and hence, makes grouping actually more popular. But when you are railroaded off the bat into no progression without groups - people get discouraged very easily and they look for other entertainment to occupy their time.

If the individual player had more incentive to log on and actually make individual progress, more people would play. The more people that are playing, the more you will be inclined to look for groups to take on harder content.

Quest drop rates can be ridiculous at times. The Task system has so much potential , but at the moment , just doesnt offer enough for the time spent on projects . In a game with SO much content , i would think sony would want to pick up the pace on quest drops , exp gain , and actually make things worthwhile for people to want to log on and play. Im so sick and tired of grinding in MPG for AA"s (which seems to be the only thing to do in a group at 70) that it would be refreshing to actually go to , say , Hate and get the same exp. Why cant that be done? Simply because it is a lower level zone? That mentality has to go. Make it enticing for people to want to grind in these areas. There are hundreds and hundreds of AA's for players to gain - why not let people gain them? There are tons of easier , rewarding quests that could be implemented , why not implement them ? And whats wrong with Solo play? **Because it is supposed to be a social game** - well the social boundries are wearing down. If it were made possible for say, a warrior to solo in a high end zone, actually make decent exp , and survive in a decent manner , this would at least give people the incentive to log on and have a little fun of thier own and actually populate the servers again. Now you might find yourself with 10 people solo'ing in a zone (instead of a dead empty zone) and these people might actually decide to group together to kill a boss mob in that zone.

It all starts with small step thinking, but big revamping of the entire mentality of how the game is played - and has been played for many years now. I for one enjoy a little bit more fast paced play now , and cannot stand grinding for 2-3-4 hours at a time in the same boring zones to gain one AA - i just dont feel like i accomplished a whole lot.

Just my 2 cents worth - but Sony should consider an out and out overhaul of the game - quests - classes - and exp gain if they truly want to keep things interesting. Not shovel out more content.

**edit - i would like to see Sony try to actually bring people back to the game than start merging servers first. Altho im sure it might be the best option in some cases - i would rather see the game become fun again and offer something more than just grinding and LFG for hours

I'd just like to say that I disagree with your findings. Okay, I'm not a level 70 with 200+ AAs, I'm just a plethora of smaller characters on MANY servers.... If the high end game bores you (the XP grind, the constant pressure of raiding, etc.) then start a new character and play that for a while! I've seen so many friends drop out of the game because of the high end. It doesn't make it wrong or right, it's just that at the high end you're pressured by guild/friends into doing stuff, instead of playing for fun. Forgive me for saying, but aren't games played for fun??

Okay, that said, I agree that _something_ should be done. I don't have the answers, or in fact any suggestions, but I don't think raising XP gained from other zones is the answer. Many of us LIKE the quieter zones, low XP or not. Lets leave certain zones to attract the powergamers who think XP and UBER loot is the be all and end all, and let the rest of us that are more interested in having fun have the other 100 or more zones to ourselves....?

Ok first let me say I am from tarew marr, the signs of population decress are there but the reason i believe sony is not confirming it is because all the people that left still have active accounts that have not expired. I have see less then a 100 traders in bazaar ever mind trying to find a group. Most of the raiding guilds have folded. Not all of them but most. I think a merge of servers is def needed but there are people for some reason that are against it, saying that they have accounts on more then one server. (could they be the ones selling pp and items for real money) Yet there could be a possiblity.
Also do you force everyone from one server or 2 servers into another or do you close a server and let those pick which they would like to goto but this gives the chance of still having an underpopulate server. If you choose wrong server from where all your friends went to will they allow you to move again within a certain time frame or will you be paying to have your account moved again.
Lastly, what about the eco system of each server. They are all different. People would have to deal with it. but what about the few relic items?
I believe merges are needed but there are many issues sony will have to decide on. and they will have to admit there is a population problem which they are refusing to at this time.

I had to personally talk to live chat for 3 days straight, persistantly telling them that my char hasn't been moved back. I then asked them for the higher management's phone number, and immediately I was referred to someone in charge. They took my move into a top priority.

I have played on/off since release and I have to tell you; with my 52 Magician I just got lucky tonight but other the groups take forever. The planes are empty. Everyone and their mom who have the time to play 24/7 are in the guilds that just camp the uber end game spots leaving EVERYONE ELSE out in the dust... really shady but I'll be playing Guild Wars on release; til then its EQ majority of the time and the Guild Wars events.

PvP was on the decline, but it wasn't new MMOs per se, that has led to the recent heavy decline, it is acutally to changes made to the PvP servers that are doing it to a lot of people. That combined with the inavailability of transfers from PvP to blue servers (other than Legends) are causing people to flee from the PvP servers to new MMOs.

Who wants to bet that NOONE who works for SoE actually plays EQ. I'd wager big money that not a single employee who has anything to do with making a difference in this game actually plays a single hour on a real server. If they did they would know one thing...this game is a shell of it's former self. It is a hollow experience to be in such a developed world (read: too many zones) and have noone to play with...bigtime downtime when LFG, and that is due to one thing....too many servers. SoE, the writing is on the wall. You had best pay heed.

Maybe that's part of the problem. Not saying they shouldn't be in high-end guilds, but do they ever start up chars and try to play from the perspective of newbie right on up through uber-Time?

Seriously--if they're hanging out in high-end guilds, do they know the frustrations of trying to get giant rat whiskers to drop for the Pine Scout newbie armour? Or the insantity of trying to get the final calcified ulna for the Fell Blade newbie armour? Or where the hell is the goblin two-handed sword for the Fine Antique Poinard? What about the series concerns of players and empty zones? Not that I mind--I find it refreshing to own Nurga, but I doubt a level 11 warrior is having a blast trying to work the upper part of Blackburrow by his/herself due to LFG going unanswered--when instead, said warrior can group in PC and PL through the next 10 levels.

Some how, I don't think, Brenlo and crew are spending a lot of time at pre-Planes levels to fully appreciate player concerns.
Server Merger
# Jan 19 2005 at 12:00 PM Rating: Decent
I play a 63 Shadowknight on Prexus Server, and most of the time the only way for me to get a good group goin is with the other LFG people in my guild. Zones that used to be packed, are now empty.

The new expansion won't help matters at all. Your simply adding more places for people to go, but there isn't that many people left, so we have even MORE empty zones.

So basically your left with 2 options: 1) Let the game die, and you'll be left with a lot of angry people, because there are a lot of people that still like to play, and would like to continue to play. 2) Merge the servers. This would solve a lot of your empty zones, LFG for hours, not enough people to raid, and low server population problems.

Now i know that this forum probably won't be read by anyone at SoE that matters, or if this forum IS read by someone that matters at SoE...they really won't give a flying f**k, but if it isn't laid out in plain veiw everywhere that the players can post it, then we haven't done our part to try to get SoE to remove their thumbs from their currently worthless @$$es.

Thanks,

Well I have played since Kunark hit the selves and i have never seen so few people as i see now.I am the leader of a guild on Prexus server and just a year ago, it seemed like there were to many people on the server, and there was talk of spliting the server. Now i here complaints all the time of "I cant find a group ".If you are under level 60 forget the lfg tool because no one is ever on it.LDoN has become desolate it seems like EQ is dieing a slow death. We need to merge the servers so we can play again without sitting in pok lfg for hours on end. Also Sony needs to work on getting new people into the game.Without new blood it's just a matter of time before the old players leave for greener pastures.
I love the game but i see it dieing fast. And if the Devs dont see that then they must be busy playing another game.
Don't let the game die.Give it back some new life.
MERGE THE SERVERS
I for one would rather sit lfg when the tool is full than sit lfg when the tool is empty.

LEGENDARY SERVICE IS A COSMIC JOKE! & PVP SERVER POPULATION

1. Population on the PvP servers has been in decline for a long time. It was not untill EQ2 came out that folks really noticed.
2. In effort to escape a server that was slowly bleeding players I decided to move to Legends. I had expected a slight improvement in population and some new faces.
3. Upon arrival to LEGENDS I found to my horror a server with cosmic population problems. The highest number of active ( non trader ) players I found in 30 days was 84 !
4. If you are looking to find a group for your under 65 toons avoid this server. You will not find any.
5. If you are looking to find a group for your 65+ character plan on a 1-4 hour active search.
6. SOE claims to give you special perks for LEGENDS price of $39.95 / month.

** Character Pages: After 30 days of /webupdate. 4 emails sent to the link LEGENDS provides (www.EQLegends) and 1 long talk with a in game GM who confirmed my link address. I never got my own personal home page with my Character Profiles.

** Calendar of Events: Unless you move to Legends during any holiday season. In my case I moved in the middle of December. Staff was off for 3 weeks untill the new year. Oh sure there was the usual GMs online for everyday help. But Events were non existant.

**Interactive Maps: see character pages above. Same thing. Nothing.

**Legendary Items: Could of been some but I did meet the 20 or so people that are the everyday population. Not one of them could show me a legendary item. Including the 4 who just won an event.

** Guild Halls: Great Idea but totally useless because none of the guilds that still play on LEGENDS bother to use the link. I was told to go to the usual spots to join the guilds I was asked to join. Perhaps SOE was having problems with this like the Character Sheets.

I just wanted to point out this was just the start of a long and lonely month that cost me $39.95. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY !

People are nice when you can find someone to talk to. GMs are great when you have something to ask them. Other then that the whole experience was a joke and well played scam. I have put in a total of 11 emails to SOE and have been stuck in some twisted twilight zone for the past month trying to get my characters back to my home server. Not one email has been responded to dispite using multi email addresses.

CUSTOMER SERVICE is a LEGENDARY JOKE DO NOT GET HOSED LIKE I DID.
