Have they been true to their word regarding time it takes for the maint? Am I going to be able to log on at 9:30ish EST and play???

I simply would like to know one thing...

Why is it always during NA prime times that they go and drop the service for hours at a time? They never schedule these things for say... 3am-11am EST (That'd be midnight to 8am PST).

Maintenance

While it may be maintenance, they usually have different updates or fixes they sneak in as well, you can check in the developers corner.
not update!!

server MAINTENANCE...

lissen guys, if they were updating, it'd ALL be down at once...they are NOT UPDATING. it is MAINTENANCE. they are getting the servers all nice and clean again before we dirty them up with the lag hundreds of players brings.
Updates

Doing maintenance during my work hours is great. So I don't really mind the downtime. Hi Manwea! Cyclona here.

Anyways, having them do monthly service likes this makes me happy to see my 20/month is going to good use, and the game continues to be reliable and fun, unlike the Star Wars Galaxy Chat Program and Terrain Simulator^^
Server Hardware upgrade
# Jul 29 2004 at 3:52 AM Rating: Good
If you ask me, I think they are gonna upgrade the Hardware for the servers.
Like more Hard drives, memory, faster CPU,... whatever they need...
There will be a lot more players to come when the game is finally released in Europe, even tho they just release it on PC (WHY??????)

i'm pretty sure that's what they're doing. as far as i know, they're adding more servers for the European release. tho i'd hate to see what kinda of prices the AH has (if any) if the server has all noobs on it.

Not sure if anyone else has experianced this one or not, but,(coming from Lakshmi Server) the mobs have been extremely wierd as of late. I have been in dunes leveling my drk, and, im not sure if it is lag due to too many people being on or what, but i go and pull a mob but when i cast poison on it, it dosent follow me, it just runs back and forth in like a 2 foot pattern, back and forth, back and forth. Its kinda strange and i didnt know if anyone else noticed this. If so, hopefully one of the GM's caught it and will do something about it. Just wanted to voice my thoughts on this. :P

Let's think about this logically. If they were adding in new things (or unlocking something for us), it would be World-wide. EVERYONE would go down at once.

Since Servers are being maintenanced in three's, my guess is that they are moving some cases across the street or somethin'.

Actually, it's in the exact order of the server status page. And it has been like that for staggered planned maintenance periods as long as I can remember.
HardWare
# Jul 28 2004 at 5:21 PM Rating: Decent
They have to do this so the HardWare on the Servers doesn't fail. Just think if they didn't do this...your playing and then boom the main HardDrive on one of the Servers fails or boom CPU overheats and distroys parts in the Server.

I'm just glad my $13/month is going to a good cause.
dragoon

1:00 PM EST --> 9:00 PM EST. I understand why they do the maintenance during JP downtime, but couldn't they switch it off every other time or at least every third time and do it at like 1:00 AM --> 9:00 AM?

Ah well, I'll have to, uh... Do something else that day. -.-

Hardware double check and maint. before COP.

The last servers are done Sept. 1 so in time for extensions to the timeframe if needed, and then time to get ready for COP release.

Can't wait.

8 hours aint bad.

Non-content related.

If they are only doing certain servers, and the are staggering the maintenance this much, it likely has nothing to do with content or stored data. This will be a hardware check. Disk defragmentation, cleanup, that sort of thing. The requirements an MMO game puts on the physical hard disks of a server are disgustingly cruel from a data integrity standpoint. They may also be adding additional memory or replacing suspect modules. Something physical, that must be done one at a time.

normally the sectioned updates like this are mantinence on the physical servers, like hardware and stuff

Wow, i didn't even think of that. They probably have to open up all the servers and blow them out with an aircompressor to get the dust out, run utilites similar to disk defragmenter, and such.

8 hours isn't bad, it's when they take longer than the 8 hours that they scheduled. Anyone know what they are adding/updating? Usually they have a list of *fixes* they are doing...
