Sandbox Zombie Survival MMO H1Z1 Unveiled

SOE shows some gameplay on the Game Talk Live daily show for its newest title.

On this evening's Game Talk Live daily gaming news livestream, SOE president John Smedley officially unveiled H1Z1. The game is toted as a F2P, persistant world, apocalyptic survivor MMO... or in other words, another zombie-themed game. As reported earlier, H1Z1 is a play on the 2009 H1N1 virus, and from there you can easily extrapolate how zombies have come to be.

During the show, we learned that:

  • You play an apocalyptic survivor
  • Nighttime is when the zombies come out
  • You can light things on fire to burn them down, including buildings other players have made
  • Uses the Forgelight engine (same as PlanetSide 2)
  • Uses Emergent AI (a feature touted for EverQuest Next)
  • "We're taking the survival genre to the next level... it's going to be a blast." -Smed
  • The game has no skills and no leveling

After the unveiling, John Smedley commented about influences being "The Walking Dead" and "who doesn't want more zombies?" (Editor's Note: I'll pass, thanks!) He then confirmed it will launch on PC, but the PlayStation 4 has not been decided yet for a potential platform. There is a vehicle system where you can run zombies over, there is full physics and objects are destructable.

For more H1Z1 information, hop over to the new Reddit subforum—in particular, "What is H1Z1?" Smedley also shared this afterward on Twitter:

Pre-alpha load screen: the "Apocalypse" part of the title was already dropped.

Is this what Smedley said was dedicated to the players of Star Wars Galaxies back in January? We certainly hope not. UPDATE: Apparently, it is. Near the end of the broadcast Smedley clarified that, in regards to SWG players, he thought they would enjoy the town building aspect of the game.
