Ultima Online Post-Mortem - 15 Years Later

Key team members recall the development of this patriarchal MMORPG

The Game Developer's Conference is a collection of annual events that bring together the best and brightest minds in the game development community to share ideas with their peers. Every once in a while, GDC Vault releases some of those presentations for free to the general public, and this is one of those awesome times!

This time around, it's a video lecture from GDC Online, held in Austin last October. But it wasn't just any lecture, no sir. It's a post-mortem of sorts for the grand-daddy of our genre -- Ultima Online.

On the panel were three of the core Ultima Online design team members in Raph KosterRich Vogel and Starr Long, and it's as much a fireside chat as it is a development talk. They tell some great stories any fan of the early days of the genre will appreciate.

Of course, the question that immediately pops into my mind is... will they get the band back together? Of course there was a key player missing from the panel, Ultima Online creator Richard Garriott who is off working on his own spiritual successor to Ultima Online in Ultimate RPG. But it would be great to see these minds making games together again!
