A little peek into what's to come to ARR.

The Realm Reborn coming to FFXIV is still in progress, but there's a crafting video frin alpha that just hit YouTube. It looks to still be operating with the gather/produce mechanics we've come to know from MMORPGs all over, but with its own twist. Logging and harvesting appears to release many different types of resources, of which can be chosen from, and when crafting (in this instance, carpentry) there seem to be a lot of different types of actions you can do, such as in EverQuest II's system, that alters progress, quality, and stability. 

It's yet to be changed more, but this is very promising stuff coming out of the ARR relaunch.
