Hardcore PvP Server Opens

There's a new server in town. Fear it. Here's the press release:

MAYHEM AND CHAOS REIGN ON EVERQUEST'S NEW PLAYER VS PLAYER DISCORD SERVER
You Can Run, But You Can't Hide

Life or Death is the Only Option and the Last Few Players Standing Win! Norrath is normally a very safe, secure land. We're changing that. As of December 19th, a new level of excitement and competition will be added to EverQuest as Discord, our new competition PvP server goes live.

This new server will only be live for a few short weeks, as Sony Online Entertainment challenges our community to discover who amongst them is the fiercest wizard or warrior. Discord is a hardcore Player vs. Player server, offering players fast-paced gameplay with the thrill of eminent danger and the agony of defeat. The battle begins December 19, 2003 and ends January 12, 2004 with the highest-scoring survivors proclaimed the winners.

Battles are fought to the death and the slain will not be restored or resurrected for any reason. Any character slain will be recreated as a newbie and will have to start all over again. Corpse looting is allowed, but you'd better hurry, as all corpses will decay in 30 minutes. Each EverQuest account will be allowed one character on the Discord server.

Players can reach level 50 with no Alternative Advancements, while an increased experience modifier will facilitate faster paced gameplay. Points are based on the victims, not the killer. Players can only gain points from characters that are within 20 levels of them and higher level targets will earn more points. The point total is distributed evenly between each person in a group with any fraction of a point rounded up to a full point. Additionally, if your character is slain, half of your earned kill points are lost. The top six surviving players with the most kill points on January 12, 2004, will be proclaimed victorious. The six victors will receive honors that will forever remind Norrath or their strength and bravery.

The victorious will be bestowed the following prizes:

  • A class-appropriate item will be named after each winning character in the upcoming EverQuest expansion, the Gates of Discord. As an example, a winning Ranger may have a magical bow named after their character, while a Wizard might have an enchanted staff given their name.
  • Each winning character will receive their named item shortly after the new EverQuest expansion, Gates of Discord, launches.
  • Winners will be allowed a one-time transfer of their character and all gear from the Discord server to another server of their choosing.
  • Winning characters will be awarded a unique title that distinguishes them from their fellow Norrathians. Discord is not for the weak or fainthearted, so there will be no in-game support; in other words, Game Masters will not be watching over your shoulder!

Hack discovery

Brilliant hack discovery on the part of Sony. Make a server with a high motivation to hack then sit and watch. That is if that is what Sony is doing.

I would just like to say that this is a competition for the best hacker. And the best hacker happen to be darken bane. darken bane is /w all gnome 20 50. Now that they have destroyed all the high levels using these hacks they will kill anyone level 6+ that is not one of them. They killed Sinpus, level 39 bst, using speed hacks in EC. He was the last real threat and the highest on the server. Its funny how a mage always seems to find you no matter where you are at...(track hack). I liked seeing a beastlord gate I really liked that one. But I really like once you kill a DB they are level 29 in 2 hours yes there is double the xp but I think someone is using exploits. Well DB is going to win the first 5 spots but it will be a hollow victory because everyone knows that the top 5 hacked. Im not saying the whole guild is corrupt just the ones that can run from the middle of Feerrrott to the middle of Innothule in less that 1 minute. So hats of to Darken Bane to proving they are the best hackers in the games. Plz SOE when you if you keep discord going after the server reset at least have the GMs monitor the hacking and exploiting. Other than DB Discord is a blast and I hope SOE keeps it going but without those cheaters.
Hackers WELCOME!!
# Jan 01 2004 at 4:25 PM Rating: Good
The message that rings out loud and clear on the Discord server is "Hack Here Please". So those of you who want to dust the cobwebs off those yet-to-be-tried speed/warp programs and fire them up on Discord, go for it! (It must have Sony's seal of approval, wouldn't you think?.) After all, it's been going on since day 1 and it's very obvious that SOME *coughPLAYERSscough* are doing it and hey...I am sure it must enhance THOSE players Norrath experience!! Gosh, it sure does mine. My technique when, as a level 8 player being ganked by a level 20+ who just went from SK to EF to Qeynos Hills to WK in 5 seconds flat - AND popped up at my feet to root and blind me and - of course send me back naked to my GM - was to just smile at them and say "Mr. Barbie Shaman Sir, hope my death adds to your kill points and allows YOU to win, and that this kill FULLY enriched YOUR Norrath experience as it sure has mine!"

And Sony folks....
Congrats on allowing a place where those folks who hack CAN call home and feel comfortable doing so knowing that you will do nothing to stop them, as well as allowing me and many others who do NOT hack, to be used as practice dummies for these players. WELL DONE!! Can't wait to see the name on these NEW items. Especially since the name of the expansion is Gates of Discord...fitting as you open wide the gates, and welcome cheats.
(removes tongue from cheek)

If you you decide to give this server a go...KUDOS to you, as it IS fun. But do remember, Sony may see you AND hackers as equals...and just be aware that the playing field...is not.

To those who have achieved high kill-points and levels as non-hackers, I fully congratulate you on your skill and techniques! As I know that MANY of you have WORKED to achieve these kills and levels by "normal" means, as opposed to software-manipulation, in order to off-set your inability to "win" any other way.

(Sony folks, if I am wrong, and I sincerely hope I am, that you do NOT allow as mentioned above, and that you are simply putting out a NET to catch these folks in...fine, but please do something, anything, to stop this.....just let us know you appreciate us helping you to catch and stop these buggers...then DO it.)
People Cheat on Discord
# Dec 31 2003 at 6:22 PM Rating: Good
Been playing on Discord for the past week+ and all I can say is it's apparent who's playing with SEQ, and it's also pretty apparent the same people are using GM Gates and Speed Hacks. Sad that they'll win. Oh well, even though you KNOW you cant beat them, it's still fun to try.

Naming policy RIP
# Dec 29 2003 at 2:12 PM Rating: Decent
The naming polcy is long since dead. It seems like there are more goofy names on Bristlebane than RP names. I like the idea of having an item named after you, but does anyone really want to use the mighty hammer of Imacleric? How about the Bigbubba's Pants of Pleasure? Even better, Wonderous Sword of Boobookitty. . .

Strikes fear in my heart.
one more thing

when you start smack the first npc you see and you get another bag, food, drink and bandages each time you do this as your able to loot the others off your corpse.

your cheat theory doesnt work. you cant be killed till lvl 6 so it would be time consuming to say the least to do it your way and meanwhile ppl are leveling to the 20's and 30's.

i loved playing on here doing the noob quests for armor etc but starting from scratch a couple times got old.

its the players that have plenty of friends to tag along with that are going to do well.......as soon as you hit lvl 6 its like putting a bullseye on your back.

i even have some chump kill me for my noob armor....he was 22 lvl's higher so he got no kill pts and after i got rooted...dotted...and gave him a rude gesture on my way down he told me it was for the armor for a friend.

"angrie" has made many an enemy on discord...:)

it was fun for a change of pace and even got me interested in making a new char and doing the noobie quest armor and weapon.....given the prices in the bazaar since the natorious plat dupe i've vowed to only use item drops and quested stuff for my new shammy. got myself an uber derv ring last night...:)...plus two dex
re: what if
# Dec 28 2003 at 10:39 PM Rating: Default
likis don't clouge the posts.
ok about the items there is a definite advantage to having a cool name and since the player population is going to be low then you should be able to get the name you would like.
oh and the person that would win of course would be someone from the crazy uber guilds or someone without a job who has a whole lot of play time.
exploit
# Dec 25 2003 at 11:38 AM Rating: Decent
Easy exploit.
Make a mage...
Sit in your home town...
Guards won't attack your pet for fighting but will kill someone that hits you...
Camp to heart's content...

At least that's how one could do it.
Melees going to rule
# Dec 24 2003 at 8:02 AM Rating: Default
On a normal PVP server, melees may end up at a disadvantage to the caster classes. But if your re-starting as a newbie each time, caster classes are going to have it rough. If it's one thing wizards, enchanters, etc. excel at when low level, it's getting killed frequently. Melees tend to survive longer, and may end up higher level (and able to deal with low level spells) just because the casters will have trouble gaining levels!

Why am I posting.. I should be playing and trying to win this dam thing(Hehe).
Don't get me wrong because I love eq and play it all the darn time, but my beef is on how the game is set up.. It's not really based on skill, but rather how long you have played the game. With the server going live for only a short time it gives everyone opportunity to shine(at least for a litttle time). Seems like the people who have friends or alliances will be way better off than the soloers. Being from the RZ server I know how trusting the wrong person to group with can be the end of you and you Bp.
Shanter brings up a good point about people exploiting this system of play. People will find ways to cheat and most likely those people will win. I'm gonna try the Discord server anyway and try and get past lvl 5..

There's no Kunark.. otherwise you could make an Iksar which you can't(atleast on Test you couldn't, haven't tried since it moved live so I might be wrong.)

Not that I intend to play on the server, but according to the info I read when they were testing this server there is no luclin or PoK.

Since that's as I remember it, I might be wrong and luclin's nexus might be available so people can cross continents. Not much point to this though as I can imagine with such a big zone most people chose an elf or gnome to play in Gtr Faydark.

despite all the negative stuff here i am having a blast on this server but to clarify a few things u can loot your corpse if a player dosent kill u or if they leave something and banked items are lost
The End?
# Dec 22 2003 at 5:13 PM Rating: Decent
"The battle begins December 19, 2003 and ends January 12, 2004"

This mean the server comes down forever on Janurary 12th?
RE: The End?
# Dec 24 2003 at 4:44 PM Rating: Decent
yes, this is a contest server, top 6 point holders for pvp kills will have items named after them in new expansion, and will recieve the item sometime after it goes live. They will also get special name/title.

Interesting but easy to cheat

This is interesting, but there is an easy cheat method to this.

This is similar to competition an old BBS MUD did back in the day.

Since it appears that the ranking is based on kills, you can get two first level characters, friends, and have one kill the other, over and over again, racking up their kill score.

Since that's so fast and easy, they can do it to each other, just choosing different classes, so they get their own respective wins.

Since you only loose 1/2 your kills core when you die, it still a big leg up.

Maybe they thought of this maybe not... but this seems like a likely exploit.. which doesn't matter because their are no GMs on the machine.

Either that or there are invisible GMs EVERYWHERE on the machine to watch for the various exploits and tricks peeps use so they can fix them. :)

RE: Interesting but easy to cheat

Maybe they'll get around this one by saying they'll be counting unique kills? ie X killing Y 500 times counts as one kill... ?? Dunno.

A little clarity for my previous post (edit is not working). I ment the friends can work together.. one is the killer the other is the killee, consistantly.

Then they switch to other characters to pay back without loosing kill points to each other.

You are only allowed 1 character on this server per account though. To do this they would need mulitple accounts.

Discord is FUN! I started a barbarian shaman, and there was a lvl 8 mage PKing a lvl 6 shaman in halas...So I started healing the shaman, and shouting for everyone else to join in. Ha! Teach that human to mess with the barbarians :)

This does have a good side people. I have played on RZ for 3 years now and took a break b/c all friends quit EQ, so i switched to Veeshan(blue)server.....one word sums up blue servers....BORING!!!!! There is no excitement in the game, right now im level 43 in a month and twinked out with gear that i wouldnt have gotten on RZ in over a year, so i think that this promo deal is going to be very interesting, even though i was in an ANTI-PK guild, i still did my share of pking.....now what about corpse camping?
Weeee Splat!

Real players
# Dec 21 2003 at 4:29 PM Rating: Good
wow thats really sad that someone is moronic enough to think that someone on a certain server is a "real" player and one on another isnt, thats like the english settlers considering the natives barbaric or dimwitted. You shouldnt speak unless you truely understand both sides. Some enjoy pure RPing like in FV while others play with a little blood lust like on RZ, just depends on who they are, and if FV is truely that broken why not leave? other wise you have no reason to claim whos a real player and whose not because as far as im concerned anyone who plays this game is a REAL player. Get a clue and dont *****.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 20 2003 at 11:07 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) 'Hardcore' PVP server for the developmentally disabled player. Meanwhile, FV is wrecked and no new server for real players.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 21 2003 at 12:15 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) "Real players?" That's bs. I play on RZ, and prior, played on Xev for 2 years. There's no fun in blue servers, you make a char, level him up to 65 in a month or so, and there's notthing to do but get aa's from there. In pvp servers you got people to deal with, pvp guilds, etc etc. FV is a sissy server. The ones with a lot of money level real fast, and that's it. "Real players" pfft
RE: Typical SOE
# Dec 21 2003 at 7:22 PM Rating: Good
I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but i think what is ment by Real Players is a server for people who actually want to stay on that server. This is pretty weak that they are going to make a new server and only transfer the top 50 people after a few months and close it. What this means is there will be time for one more guild to build up a bit then move to a new server. Hope it isn't yours.
No No Drop
# Dec 20 2003 at 8:47 PM Rating: Default
This server is great there is no such thing as no drop and you can loot all the stuff off their body. This will put everyone at a level playing field no more deleveled rogues with 400 MR owning everyone.

Sorry there are 2 things that are no drop your bread cakes and your drinks that you start off with.
what if....
# Dec 20 2003 at 7:49 PM Rating: Decent
So according to this, weather I die from another character, or I die from a Grizzly Bear, I will begin again as a level 1 with no equipment?
bah
# Dec 20 2003 at 7:06 PM Rating: Default
Yea and we all know the winners will be a group of people who pick on every person they possibly can. No way I will touch this bunch of crap.

At least it will pull some crowding off other servers though.
