SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT UNLOCKS THE GATES OF DISCORD(tm) FOR EVERQUEST

- New Continent, Class and Alternate Advancement Abilities Mark a New Age of Discovery for Popular Online Game -

SAN DIEGO, CA - December 17, 2003 -

Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online gaming, today announced Gates of Discord(tm), a new expansion for the incredibly popular PC Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), EverQuest.

This expansion will offer exploration of a newly discovered continent; a new class (the Berserker) and Alternate Advancement Abilities that will offer new and unique skills to master. Gates of Discord will be available February 2004 at retail outlets such as Electronics Boutique, Best Buy and Gamestop, and as a secure digital download from SOE. The retail version of Gates of Discord will also come with a unique in-box gift and special in-game magic item. By purchasing the retail version of Gates of Discord, players will be able to claim the in-game item.

"Players will face the greatest threat to Norrath and the chaos of a realm yet undiscovered. Norrathians will need to unite with the Wayfarers Brotherhood to oppose this mighty force," said Michael Lustenberger, director of product marketing, Sony Online Entertainment. "In preparation for one of the most epic adventures yet, the Gates of Discord will offer players alternate advancement abilities, leadership experience, the Berserker melee class and vast new areas and zones to explore."

The Gates of Discord directs players to the west side of Antonica where Nedaria's Landing is abuzz with activity in preparation for one of the greatest and most dangerous expeditions in the history of Norrath. Stories and events will lead players across an uncharted land twisted and scarred by an unknown force. New alternate advancements will challenge the most veteran of players while the new Berserker class brings inordinate amounts of strength and bravery.

About Gates of Discord

The rumors that began in The Ruins of Kunark now hold true- a new continent has been discovered on the far side of Norrath. The Wayfarers Brotherhood will need to amass a brave and trustworthy army for an expedition of epic proportions. Join armies of adventurers on their quest to unearth long-hidden artifacts of power from temple ruins, secret catacombs, dank sewers and vast marshlands. Should you fail, Norrath, its inhabitants, and its gods may fall under control of the forces of Discord!

Gates of Discord includes the following new features:

* 100 new Alternate Advancement Abilities offer a different method of character progression with new and unique skills to master

* Gain leadership experience and unlocks many group and raid-enhancing tools

* 20 new zones, ten new instanced zones and ten new traditional zones including a huge ship city zone, complete with merchants, tradesman, and quest-givers, where you can gather your party and launch expeditions. The new combat zones are for characters level 50 and above

* New Berserker class empowers you to ravage your enemies with two-handed axes or by hurling large objects

* Discover the newly found continent of Taelosia, which holds the secrets of Norrath's future

* 20 all new NPC models make for hundreds of challenging encounters unlike anything seen before in EverQuest

* New Tribute System enhances gameplay by allowing players to choose beneficial attributes, skills, or effects through offerings at their home cities

* Dozens of new and exciting story-driven quests for the hardy adventurer

* New tradeskill recipes to produce hundreds of new items

* Unearth arcane spells, mighty weapons and other hidden treasures!

The new expansion will be downloadable via the EverQuest launch pad for $29.99. Additionally, retailers will be offering a boxed version that will carry a suggested retail price of $29.99, which includes a special in-box item and in-game item.

Letter to SOE

Well here I sit on another interesting EQ evening.
1. It has take me 5 min to even get on
2. On less time than it took to login and I ‘m trying again
3. Now I start over
4. Wooot I’m in again no I out again tried to zone!!!!!
5. Finally in again great now I get in some game time, damn out again stupid me tried to zone again
6. Well here I am again I have logged in 4 times to cross 3 zone ( each login several min) sitting in POK
7. Now I’m out again what an exciting evening I am having could have been watching paint dry.

Now ask yourself. Is this your idea of a way to spend an evening? Be real honest now. I am not you average junkie player (I don’t think). I have had to schedule my time carefully to have this bit of an evening to relax and do something I really enjoy. I go to the server status section of your web sight tells me all servers are up, I try to login and everything is locked. Can you see anything wrong here? If you were to have some indication on your web sight that there were problems than I could have spent my time with a good book or movie rather than being played like an idiot in front of computer screen, trying to get into a game that is screwed “again”.

It would be oh so nice if you would show just a smidgen of appreciation for the value of you customers times. After all not all of us are the bug-eye junkie type with no life other than EQ (maybe this is how you see your customers).

As I see it Sony has become so driven by expansions that you are failing to fix what is wrong with the old before moving on. You are now head long into new expansion, and you have 3 or 4 old ones that are not working. You have competitors out there now putting out maybe not a superior product but one that at least it work when if goes live. How long is it now since you actually had a patch that worked? You go live with problems that you know were on test yet neglecting to fix them. Than down the road when you decide to fix an on going problem you end up causing hours of play time going to waste, can you not see time is of value? It does not matter what product or service you sell in the end it is always the one that respects the customer and functions with the least trouble for the customer that will win out in the end.

Sony gets paid their monthly fee if I play 1 hour that month or 101 hours. Now I would feel much better, and less upset and stressed with Sony if I could actually play for my time. Not be dying due to lag and LDing, not spending a large portion of my scheduled game time logging in and getting booted. I guess my concern is (as I love EQ) how long do you actually expect to be able to maintain you present level of clients, when the quality of your product continues to fall. My fear is when you wake up to smell the coffee my game will be no more. When it starts to lose money someone is going to pull the plug than I will be forced to move on. My decision is now do I stick with a sinking ship investing my time, or do I abandon ship and go invest my time with something I can see that may have a longer future.

As a customer purchasing quality leisure time, I feel I should have some value to Sony Online Entertainment INC. To me my time is valuable; I could be finding a better bang for my buck.

I hope you do not take this as a threat. I and a group of other players are considering starting a movement on line among existing players to boycott the purchase of any further new expansions until the issues with the old ones are dealt with. We are talking major fixes not just a few crumbs to make look like thing are getting worked on when your major effort is really expansion oriented.

I would like as some feed back on this idea here. As consumers of a product this seems to be our only option to force Sony Online Entertainment INC. to pay attention. Our only real power is in our purchase power. Come on people if we don’t buy them they won’t make them thus will have some time to fix the old problems before they move on. Do we really have the will power to stick to our gun or are we going to continue to feed Sony Online Entertainment INC. our cash and continue to only *****?

Well I do hope I have not totally wasted my evening as I am still unable to get on EQ so must go this evening was non event as far a EQ goes.

New Staff?
# Dec 21 2003 at 8:03 PM Rating: Decent
Is the item given with buying the boxed version of this expansion worth it? What is the staff for and does it have stats?
100 More AA's
# Dec 21 2003 at 4:07 PM Rating: Decent
Is that 100 more AA's per class or 100 more AA's total with a chunk of them going to the new Bezerker class?

I think Sony's logic on the whole Dwarves can't be Bezerkers thing was that Bezerkers can (and apparently do) throw huge baulders and things.. Dwarves just ain't big enough. Notice its all the large races that can be them?

As for psycho kitty kats throwing hissy fits.. Its plain to see to anyone whose ever tried to bathe a cat. ^_^
What High lvl?
# Dec 21 2003 at 9:29 AM Rating: Default
Me, Im a woosy, I just enjoy playing the game!
I may not have a big lvl player, and , quite frankly, I dont care! I just enjoy the game!
Sure, all this downloading sucks and it ends up costing me more than what I would if I bought it in the store, but hell, I am put in a pos where EQ cannot gaurantee if it would be available in this country!! So I grab what I can, cause I enjoy the game!!
So to all those who love to whine, hey, Grow up!!
To all others, peace and solitude with long nights ahead
something i noticed
# Dec 20 2003 at 7:22 PM Rating: Decent
Geez there not even going to cut the people any slack who download this expansion. Im not paying $30 for 20 new zones. I don't like this download only stuff. Wouldn't be so bad if they gave you a program with it that allowed you to back it up on a cd-r, but they don't. Then if you ever have to delete EQ (or redo your HD, etc) you get to download all that crap again.

I hope they don't raise the level limit to 70. I personally wish it had never went over 60. It just means its that much more that is expected out of you. Nothing ticks me off more while playing my 63 druid when you get these LDON groups that think your useless unless your 65. Id have rather just stayed level 60 and gained AA points.

They need to stop making expansions and fix the problems they got now.
Bring on Levl 70!!
# Dec 20 2003 at 3:37 AM Rating: Default
I want to be a so called hero that is level 70 be able to go and solo a Dragon that you once thought was uber and needed 50 odd people to kill. Im over the old content bring on the New!!

The Game was designed with lack of Vision for expansion and hence why they have had troubles with expanding it. If you look at the type of game EQ is, everyone wants to get better stats better damage you cannot avoid the problem of out growing mobs and personally i dont care. The problem is lack of new content and too much repetition of old content!!!

In conclusion Instanced events are the key aslong as they are implemented right, and not another ldon repetitive bore
lvl cap...
# Dec 19 2003 at 10:21 PM Rating: Default
ARG! No! Please SOE do not raise the lvl cap to 70! How unfun is that.. If everyone was running around Lvl 70, with their epic in the bank and tons of uber gear and platinum.. how does that make it any fun! It feels much better to work hard and get something nice. No one even visits the old world anymore... its quiet down there.. too quiet. Have you ever just taken a walk around a zone you used to hunt in back when you were level 4.. Its empty now isn't it. Whens the last time you took the boat? All I'm saying is, things have gotten out of control, everyone is a hero.. there are no average people. Norrath does need a re-vamp.. but I think it's a bit too late.

EB vs SOE
# Dec 18 2003 at 5:25 PM Rating: Default
The only reason EB are offring a free in game staff and in box extras is because by the time the expansion is released SOE hope everyone will have all the files on the computer anyway. According to the news in one of the updates you can get the patcher to download the update BEFORE it is released and in small chunks day by day till its release date. EB are trying to make sure they dont lose out to SOE cause all you'll need on release day is the code!!

Lvl 70
# Dec 18 2003 at 12:10 PM Rating: Decent
From what I have heard, level cap will be raised to 70, with the exception of first having 250 aa's to get past 65. Not sure if this is accurate though. 100 I can understand but damn 250. Can anyone verify this?
RE: Lvl 70
# Dec 18 2003 at 7:08 PM Rating: Default
i was calculating that as of now if you have 250 AA you would have almost all (if not all by then) AA skills, i think i did it with my monk and if i was right there were only 238 or around that number to max out all my AA's
RE: Lvl 70
# Dec 19 2003 at 12:14 PM Rating: Decent
I think your calculations are incorrect. To acheive all aa skills you would need somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 aa's. I have a ranger friend that has 400+ last time I talked to him. 250 isn't all that insane, really. Once you get 65, you can get an aa a day easily. Putting it that way, Only people tthat have been playing the game for a while will benefit from that initially, but that's to be expected. Anyway, I think it sounds cool.
RE: Lvl 70
# Dec 21 2003 at 10:23 AM Rating: Decent
I have 250 AA on my paladin and am nowhere near done, from the looks of it I'll finish up buying things at around 575 AAs. Of course with this expansion that number will jump 100 more at least. I just hope they are ones that make me want to continue to strive to earn them.
RE: Lvl 70
# Dec 18 2003 at 7:00 PM Rating: Decent
As far as I know, they specifically announced that they will NOT be raising the level cap with this expansion. There will be lots of new AAs though.

Will I buy it? Most likey yes, However it burns my bisquits that they release xpan after xpan while the old world just rots Id pay 10 bucks for a good over haul of the velious/kunark zones. sony claims that 100,000 peeps play eq @ 10 bucks a month..thats alotta swag and they do very very little in terms of usefull " free " xpans or updates to and for its valued exsisting customers, well im off to camp a charm that gives more charisma when you have all expansions enabled :P
