Exclusive Archer Q&A with TERA's Stefan Ramirez

We sat down with Associate Producer Stefan Ramirez to get even more details on TERA's damage-dealing archer class.

Earlier this week, we gave you an exclusive in-depth look at TERA's archer class. Miric, the TERA content manager here at ZAM, wanted to get even more information on this damage-dealing master of tactics, so he went straight to Associate Producer Stefan Ramirez to find out what being an archer in TERA is all about.

Check out our exclusive interview with Ramirez after the jump for more details on the class. And in case you missed them, take a look at our archer screenshots and video to see the class in action!

ZAM: How often can archers expect to upgrade their bow?

Stefan Ramirez: There will be many ways for an archer to upgrade their bow through leveling, rare drops, crafting and enchanting. You will probably go through more bows during your lower levels and then, when you begin getting rare gear, become attached to one and never want to stop using it.

ZAM: Will archers have access to other projectile weapons, such as crossbows and guns?

Ramirez: The archer’s combat style requires them to have absolute mastery of their chosen weapon — there’s little time to check out other options, so we kept them focused on developing their skills with the bow.

ZAM: Will certain bows have specific damage types (fire, ice, etc.) or will this attribute be gained through enchanting and skills?

Ramirez: Archer attacks are skill-based, and the skill they choose to use is what powers their arrow and ultimately determines the type of damage they will do. The more powerful the bow, the more damage you will do — but specific types of damage will be determined by the skill you choose.

ZAM: The nature of the archer seems to be to stay put when they can, but move when in the face of danger. Which abilities can archers use while on the run and which are stationary only?

Ramirez: All the classes in TERA rely on movement and precision for success in combat. Some of the archer’s skills allow for multiple targets, which sometimes require them to move around for optimum effect.

Using the bow means stopping for a moment, no matter what skill is selected. But the archer has the fastest attacks of any class in the game, and you won’t be stationary for long.

ZAM: The act of hitting a monster or player in TERA requires your projectile to make contact with the hit box of its target. Can you tell us a little bit about targeting with the archer? Will we see ranged attackers “leading” targets like in classic FPS games?

Ramirez: Archers have skills that lock on to multiple targets, and all attacks depend on where you aim your reticule and making sure your targets are in range. I think you will see archers pulling enemy groups for the party and helping to minimize unwanted aggro. In some instances, you won’t want the warrior to go in swinging but want the precision of the archer. And yes, it’s a good idea to lead a laterally moving target.
