Everquest's November Updates

This was posted on the EQ Live Site regarding the planned updates for November: ------------------- Here are some things we're working on for the November update: (Please note: my producer is making me tell you that in addition to this list, we'll still be bug fixing and maintaining the live game and that, while we hope to get each of these features in, nothing is certain. But this is what we're working on at the present time.) New LDoN raids will go Live - We be moving the two new raids that were introduced on Stormhammer to the Live servers. These raids will prove an interesting challenge for the best of guilds. Another new LDoN raid - We will also be bringing one more new LDoN raid to Stormhammer with our next update. This raid will be created with Elemental capable characters in mind. Font changes - Since EverQuest was launched, there has only been one font available. With the next update we plan to introduce the option for players to choose the font for their interface. Targeting - Sometimes it can be difficult to tell which NPC you have targeted. With the next update we hope to add a targeting indicator of some sort (something like the ring that surrounds your target in EQOA). The exact form hasn't been decided, but the goal is to make seeing what you currently have targeted much easier. Consider - Along the same lines as the proposed improvement to targeting, we want to add a way to distinguish the /con color of your target. We plan an indicator that will be easily distinguished once you have a target (probably someplace in the Target window), that should remove the need to use the /con command. Other interface changes - We are also working on some other changes that will help you to organize your information. We plan to add a new text color option for damage shield reports that will allow you to pick what color those messages use. We also want to split the "My Pet Attacks" filter into two separate filters, one for hits and one for misses. /tell windows - It is very easy to lose /tells in the confusion of combat. We want to add an option that would work much like an instant messenger. Each time you get a "tell" from a new character, a new chat window would open. That window will only display "tells" from the particular character, and any message sent from the chat window would automatically be sent as a "tell" to that character. Obviously this would be an optional feature. Help for new players - New characters will start with a bag. This will give them a little more storage space and the opportunity to learn how storage containers work earlier rather than later. We are also working on removing one of the more tedious "features" of the game, the need to practice Sense Heading. Most folks have that skill mapped to trigger along with one of their movement keys. Not an exciting skill to practice. So we plan to have all characters start with a 200 skill in Sense Heading. This will allow new players to navigate more easily, and will reduce a bit of tedium over the course of gameplay.

Maybe Sony needs to have a server for those players that just want to level quickly, not have to use any brain cells thinking since nothing will hurt them since everything will be indifferent and have few hit points and want absolutely no challenges.

If Sony had a SEPERATE SOLOable server i'd pay 50bucks a month for it. ***** legends.

it is only sense heading.

it is true that sense heading in not one of the most exciteing things to level up on. Now a days we have maps so you can just download a map to eq and all you have to do now is to pull up your map book on eq which has helped me out a lot so to the people who said that sony is makeing the game easier for newbies is not true you still have to level your charcter no matter what. i should now i have a 60 enchanter and it took me a long time to get there. so worry about something else that is harder to do than sense heading. let the newbies have all the help just as long as they have to work on getting their first 100 plat or there first aa point. cause earning money and aa points are hard to come by.

Hey Guys and Gals,

Reading about giving new character a bag and 200 points is fine with me. Hell,I just started two months ago. If I didnt have some friends who have helped me along the way I would probally still be having a hard time. Also, about these people saying that characters on the game are just helping themselves, I got to tell ya, I'm only a level 10 rogue and I get people that try and help me as much as possible! So, I say thank you to all who help newbies.

I am shocked! Shocked and appalled! How dare Sony give newbies max in a near-useless skill and *gasp* a free bag when they start out! Oh, woe to us veterans! The game is ruined! Kill Sony for ruining OUR game! Just because they devloped it and maintain it doesn't mean its theirs! WE OWN IT! STOP RUINING OUR GAME SONY!

That was all sarcasm, if you didnt catch it.

Wow, there are a lot of morons on this board. I read someone said 'why not just give newbies a level 65 char with full gear'. Now what the hell? A free bag and 200 in sense heading will NOT change gameplay much.
Most of the people complaining about this patch are just bitter because they never had these small luxeries when they were newbies themselves.
Ya, it woulda been nice if I had these when I was young, but I dont care. Why shouldn't new players get a bag?
And sense heading? There is a lot more to knowing a zone then sense heading and a map can tell. Hell, I never used sense heading with my characters. You learn a zone by exploring. Knowing north from south isnt gonna help any if you don't know the zone.
People keep saying Sony is gearing it towards newbs now. No, it isnt. The recent expansions - PoP, LoY, LDoN, have all been primarily geared towards higher level characters. So stop being so bitter that lower characters are getting some small breaks. I think its good Sony is doing it, even though I wont benefit from it. Why does everyone else have to be so up in arms about it?
Ah, right. They are losers.

Well, I have read most (but not all I admit) of the comments on the new "improvements" to EQ. So much has been said already and, even though a lot of the views are contradictory I seem to agree with most of it. Basically I do feel that EQ is heading in the wrong direction, I started playing about 4 years ago, I was told about the game by friends and decided to give it a go. Now for me a lot of the fun was just exploring. I still remeber the first time I saw the windmill in LOIO, the statue carved in the rock coming down the long track from Highhold to the Karanas. Thses were great moments for me. Of course, now now the newbs miss the excitement of running from Freeport to Qeynos. It might seem sad but I got a real sense of achievement the first time I did it! I guess what I am trying to say is that although I can understand Verant trying to make EQ less challenging to keep new players they run a very real risk of taking the wonder and staisfaction out and losing the players anyway. I do not believe you play (or stop playing) a game because it is easy or hard. You keep playing because you want to see what comes next, like a good book. I have 3 chars and after all this chunk out of my life the highest is only level 31 and I do not regret a minute of it, not even the time when (at level 11) I had to phone my brother in law to help me recover my corpse from a particularly nasty spot in Blackburrow!

I don'tcare about levels, I don't care about twinking, I really don't give a s**t about sense heading but I do still enjoy EQ, and I beleive newbes now are missing what I and many others have enjoyed. Thats all folks....

# Oct 26 2003 at 8:23 PM Rating: Default
ya'll think the game is getting too easy for the lower level chars well after reading severall of these posts i don't agree cause we were all newbies once and i bet when you were level 1 and you would have found out that SOE(or Verant for some of you) was going to give you a free bag and 200 points in sense heading you would be happy. the only reason we are complaining is cause it wasn't that easy for us but who cares when i first started playing eq before Kunark everyone was willing to help me as a level 10 monk but these days everyone is just too busy power leveling and pharming stuff to even care about the newbies so who cares give em a bag and skill in sense heading they will only need less help from uss and won't have to ask as many questions to uss more experienced players.

this post was not intended to disrespect any of your opinions but only to show my opinion.I do respect all your posts.

So Sony is making EQ so easy a child could play it. Well, that seems logical, considering everyone complaining about the update sounds like they're 11.
Or old men complaining about how back in the day, they used to have to play EQ 15 miles in the snow uphill both ways with no keyboard and they LIKED IT THAT WAY! These kids have it too easy!
Isn't the point of the game to have fun? Are these updates really ruining all of YOUR fun?
why even argue?
# Oct 25 2003 at 12:14 AM Rating: Decent
I can understand the feeling of the new chars getting sense heading maxed out for free, they should have made it like 100 or something, but thats not my call. It wont make anyone uber, and it does make navigating alot easyer.

My thing is every time there is some change in EQ people start Ranting and Raving about how they like to play back in the day and how horrible EQ is now, and everyone is entitled to there own opinion, but if you dont like playing eq anymore, why do you still play. I love playing EQ, and though i have had some of my personal beefs especially w/ LDoN it is still fun to hang out with my friends online in EQ. Getting some kick butt loot, and kill some mobs that have killed me in the past.

So my advice to everyone is, if EQ has really pissed people off that much, why get aggrivated, just dont play anymore, or just dont buy the expantions you wont play, just stop yelling and screaming on how much new EQ is ******** up. The group that i have been playing w/ has been playing eq on and off since its creation, and they still play, though they dont agree w/ all of what EQ has put into the game, Sony cant please everyone all at once, and we thing they have done a damn good job with EQ, and well still play.

This is sick! I see a bunch of whiners that feel bad cause SENSE HEADING is free now. Come on! How really useful is that! So what you had to train it! SO DID I! And you know what? It wasnt hard at all. Sure it took time. I did it as an extra hotkey during med time or in a fight. Giving free stuff to newbs? So what! This game is almost 5 years old folks! Its gonna change. The main reason peeps are complaining is because now everyone can start their own chars out pretty decent not just the high lvls who want to twink their alts. Yeah now thats always been a problem. You see a low lvl Sk with a full set of crusty. Yep hes an alt. My first alt got to 10 in 6 hrs. Thats in the old days folks. Early lvls have always been easy after the first char. And you know what the high game is still hard. That aint gonna change. Let me ask this one question. How many whiners out there quit at 50? 60? Thats right, EQ did some good changes for the old peeps too. Enjoy the game folks, its still the best out there.

Moron, the creative team that created EQ has left sony for good. They are doing nothing now than perverting the game into a stupid general MMORPG that gets a steady stream of newbies who buy the game because of the name, play it for a while and then quit. They throw out stupid little ****-ant updates with each expansion hoping it will hide the over all sh1ttyness of it while not adding any real new content. I hope sincerely they slow the hell down, make a full lore filled content filled expansion with regular zones numbered to at least 15-18 of them and of course another cool high level ultimate zone, wether it rivals PoTime or not they need to make a new one. If the next expansion is another 5 "zone" PoSh1t thing like LoY and LDoN then EQ is over, period. "Guild Wars" and the game being made my Sigilgames are just around the corner just waiting to ***** everquest out of its entire playerbase.

Well, if the only draw you had was to a game that had sense heading as its uber skill, perhaps it is you that is a bit off?

The game changes. If you can't handle that concept then perhaps something else is to your liking.

I like the changes. I like the new development team much more than the original team, and the original concept. They did do a great job of EQ, but the new team now has really taken the ball and tuned it into a great product.

I have 12 alts all have sense heading of 200. Ya it sucked but I am not upset about this change. I will agree though that many changes have made the game too easy. Heck I have a friend that never played this game before got to level 30 un power leveled in like 3 weeks. That took me 6 months of hardcore play back in the old days. Now I can take a lvl 1 to 30 in a day EASY. It is getting too easy. When I know I can get 65 in a month of hard work, when it use to take 2 years of hard work to get 60 (non powerleveled not just power grinding).

I dont care about twinking, I know people cry about it, hell, usually the crying peeps dont have 5 plat to rub together. All of my alts have a good 100k in gear on them each. Why? Because I have played 3 years and I worked my butt off for it.

What I do care about is making it so easy to level levels are meaningless practically.

Enough said.
Omg what will they do next

Ok so first they give us all maps no big deal helps gettin around, but now they give newbs sence heading, a bag (which 3 years ago you actually had to work for it) and 10 skill points. Before long SOE will make EQ so easy no one will play because there is no challenge. I haven't liked the changes that are happeinging to EQ that much, I liked the old game where it was hard and you had to get your corpse at lvl 1 which kinda sucked for my wizzy as i had drowned and i didnt know how to swim so I had to actually fight till lvl 7 with my *rusty dagger, The newbs are complaining. so what did we complain when we died or the mobs were tough....no i dont think so. The newbs are complaining that EQ is hard thats why people like it because of the challenge and if SOE gets rid of that they will have no game just a chat room with graphics.

I have read a good deal of these posts and usually do, but never really say anything. For quite some time now i have also been fighting with myself over the idea of everquest taking turns and making it a more simplistic game. It's hard for so many of us veterans who have been newbs such a very long time ago. So long ago when this brave new world of Kunark came out and their was always a sense of awe when we seen a dragon. Than velious came out and all we had to do was make the long journey to the Temple of Veeshan and on the way we could see as many dragons as we wanted. Every year or couple of years everquest loses a bit of itself and turns a bit towards "Kiddiequest" as i read below, to us old gamers who have been around sicne the original or since kunark will always remember the time of the Uber bronze pieces and fine steel weapons. But like any other good story things slowly change with time. There will always be someone out their more powerful than you so that you can never be the most powerful. With every expansion players got to the peak of their power but always faced something that not even the best of guilds could defeat. To us old players who remember the time before the bazaar, A LOT has changed, but you8 have to understand how good this is. The new changes they are suggesting are really nothing to lose sleep over, and yes looking into the long run of things the game is being made easier, but its being made easier to the new people who play the game. For us vets though its only geting more difficult. So what if they make changes so that it is easier to see who we are targetting or making our Sense Heading 200...err newbs /shrug whatever they may do its only sense heading. They get a bag as well, nothing killing bats in any newb areas for 15-20 minutes couldnt buy you. The only reason so many people are upset is because they have it easier than us. We all sound like our grandparents ya know "I had to walk 15 miles in the snow with no shoes just to get to school in the morning...and i had to Max out my sense heading to find it..." But i have come to realize one important factor that has been so far left out unless it was brought up and i missed it, and that is that us veterans should no longer be newbs. If you are following what i am saying. We should all be well on our way to the higher teired planes or in them. We should be in a well established guild or a guild of our own design or any guild to take out monsters that only the most experienced of players could even try. Im not a newb anymore thats behind me im focused on much greater things now. You know elemental planes and the such. Mobs that only newbs dream of while they are killing bats with their sense heading of 200 and their one bag. The game will continue to get easier yes, but on the same hand Sony is making sure to make it harder as well. You get to a point where exp doesnt come as easy as it did and now you have to raise your skills and find groups and get better gear. Even though i dream of the days long gone where none of these lands and planes exsisted and it was hard for us to get exp, the hell levels, and the inability to find groups even in places like Sol A or Sol B, High Keep and you all know the rest. I still go back to places like Sol A and lower guk to kill stuff with friends or by myself not because i get exp or because the items their are uber but because i enjoy adventuring in the more forgotten places. I'll get some items of some named mobs maybe hand them out to some newbs or sell them cheap make a lil profit. But whatever it is im still having fun and enjoying the adultness of the game. So they make it easier for newbs /shrug if your not a newb dont worry about it. The newbs dont realize they are making it easier for them only the players who actually have played for some time know that. It still is only a game and ytou are all going to continue to play regardless of how mcuh it upsets any of you that the game is changing. And you will continue to play as long as their are races and classes you havent played, lands and quests you havent been to or done. As long as you are in guilds with friends and raiding anywhere you will continue to play. in my opinion level 65 is only the beginning. I just thought i would throw that out there considering i never say anything at all. but i only decided to now because before this i have thought these same things, but now i realize it doesnt matter. they can add all the features they want and the game will still be dificult because it will take mroe than just you to kill a god it will take a whole guild or alliance full of people who could possibly still be wearing some bronze armor. But of course now it can be augmented =P I just hope you all realize that im not here to break anyones ideas down or act as if i know everything or any numbe rof things i just want to remind everyone including myself that we were all newbs once and to us the game was overwhelming and to all newbs for all times the game will always be overwhelming its just that heh we have all been around long enough to know what difficult is.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I've only played EQ for about 6 months now and I think I had a hard time in the start even though my friends told me that I had it easy.. TOO easy they said.
Now I'm trying to get into a high end guild (Elementals) and raiding the high end stuff for phat lewt and for fun.

When first I read about the sense heading I thought : "sheesh!! And I wasted all that time practising my sense heading??"
When I came to think about it, I realized that sense heading might get a lot of the newbs to continue playing where others would quite because they're lvl 16 and died somewhere god knows where and they can't find their corpse and lose all their gear...

And newbies are the future of the game since the more people play the game the better are our (the high level players) chances to get at the better items in the game.

That's just my 2 cents.

I agree. I actually quite EQ shortly after Kunark came out because I ran my paladin accidently into the necro guild in the sewers of qeynos and lost all my equipment. I had no idea I wasn't supposed to be there. I had no idea that was there. I was only season 10 and exploring, I got punished for exploring by losing all my equipment. The game was too hard back then. I gave up and went on to play Asheron's Call a game were a season 40+ mob wasn't planted in the middle of a bunch of way lower mobs (Griffon in EC). AC was much better for the newbie for the mobs just slowly got harder as you got farther away from the newbie towns (not anymore). It has gotten easier for the newbies, that is one of the reasons why I came back. I have since been playing for 2 years. But the game is still difficult in the upper seasons. I just reached my 51st season and am working on my first AA.

The game is fun and difficult now. If you think the game is too easy then don't powerlevel, don't go to the new zones with great exp. Go back to the original zones they are practically deserted now. Play in them. Where the loot is bad, the exp is bad but the fun is still great.

Anything I didn't know anything about eqatlas or even if i was going N S E or W I didn't have a clue where it was going to take me. So why does it matter if they get sense heading. I was taught by an experience player to hot key senseheading so when ever I turned left it would trigger it and yes it took lvls and lvls to max out but as a noob sense heading wouldn't have helped me to begin with. Giving them a bag OMG when I was a noob I had people with higher lvl chars who just felt sorry for me because I was a noob they gave me bags and lil pieces of armor and small amounts of pp without me asking for anything simply because I was nice to them and I think they like lil cleric dwarf women in distress :-). When I was like lvl 5 a higher lvl ask me to do a transfer from one of their characters to another and after I did she let me keep all of the handmade backpacks that give you 10 percent weight reduction, simply because she was able to trust me in the transfer. So how can it hurt for them to give them a bag mem the WHOLE TWO spells you get and put on the OH so uber lil 2AC only tunic they give you. That newibe will still have to learn how to mem all other spells and how to loot the corspse and put on new items later, and for those who the sense heading does help dramatically, it may stop a lot of noobs from having to ask the more experience players for so many directions, because I'm the kind that if I know I will tell you how to get there but if I don't I try to find someone that can. What is truly funny is even with sense heading I still get lost but I think I'm personally dyslexic when it comes to maps and directions. EQ is a subscription game and most eqgamers are like 18 to 45 years old because you have to pay for it monthly. For the person that said they are making it a kiddie game. I wouldn't let a seven year old play eq if you've seen some of the language alone or if you have the average 7 year old that has nightmares from scary movies what do you think so of the eq mobs would do for a good nights sleep. Not to mention you have to have the ablility to type quickly and adapt and learn a whole new language. I can remember being a noob and wondering what language are they people using when I would see ooc/ and shouts/ asking for SOW, SOE, PO9, KEI, Clarity, and then when you get in a group we need meelee
we need cc we need dps and MT, ML, aggro, mob, zoning, rezzing, looting, I can have a conversation with my real life friend that plays eq also and other people look at us like we are crazy because they can't comprehend a thing we are talking about and I don't a 7 year old could grasp the world of EQ. (At least I hope they can't) I think it is more of an adult game- come on you have the bazaar (sales men everywhere), banking, fighting, drinking, people having casinos. I just wish the bank put interest on your pp.
