ZAM's Top Five Most Anticipated MMOs of 2011

Join Senior Staff Writer Chris "Pwyff" Tom as he looks at some of the major games that are coming out this year.

For MMORPG gamers around the world, 2011 promises to be a year of plenty. With most of the upcoming MMOs having been announced in 2007 and 2008, it's hard to believe that we've all been stewing gently in our collective juices of anticipation for close to four years. Now, however, the time is finally ripe for some big changes to come to the industry, and I could not be more excited. Of course, there are probably many of you who haven't been keeping up on your MMO news, but that's where we come in! With so many big titles coming out, maybe you can simplify your choices with our most anticipated MMOs to come in 2011!

DC Universe Online (DCUO)

What it is: DC Universe Online can really be seen as Sony Online Entertainment's return to triple-A MMO development after a few years spent dabbling in children's MMOs (Free Realms, Star Wars: The Clone Wars Adventures) and MMO publishing (The Matrix Online, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Pirates of the Burning Sea). Remember, SOE is the creative force behind games like EverQuest and EverQuest II. Initially there was some trepidation that, with the release of DCUO, there would be a grand total of three superhero MMOs (City of Heroes and Champions Online) on the market, but DCUO may very well be set to take center stage as the premiere superhero MMO.

Why you should care:
With an all-star cast of some of the comic book industry's most iconic superheroes, like Batman, Superman, the Joker, Doomsday and Green Lantern, it will be hard to call yourself a comic book fan and MMO gamer if you don't check out DCUO. Of course, this MMO isn't just about the characters; it also features some very smooth action and combo-based combat that does away with your standard auto-attack snooze fest. PlayStation 3 owners should also take note of DCUO simply because this is an MMO that has clearly been made with console gamers in mind. Either way, get ready to suit up for DCUO's launch day on January 11, as it's right around the corner!

Guild Wars 2 (GW2)

What it is:
In case you haven't realized it yet, Guild Wars 2 is - surprise! - the sequel to ArenaNet's highly successful original Guild Wars MMO. ArenaNet actually announced development of GW2 in 2007 when they popped out their final Guild Wars expansion, Eye of the North, citing that they felt that they had hit a "ceiling" of how much content they wanted to add to the game without significantly revamping it. Thus, GW2 was born of that desire to create something more and, this time around, ArenaNet is aiming as high as they possibly can. In this way, expect Guild Wars 2 to have a more persistent world that exists alongside some strong instanced game play, as well as more of pretty much everything: PvP, storylines, playable races, content and much, much more.

Why you should care:
The main reason why many gamers and journalists alike are watching Guild Wars 2 so closely is that ArenaNet has always been fairly critical of common features in the MMORPG industry (monthly fees, grinding, 'filler' quests, a heavy reliance on healing and large penalties associated with dying), so most of us are just eager to hear someone thinking outside of the box. It remains to be seen if ArenaNet can live up to their revolutionary ideas but, from what I've seen so far, GW2 is shaping up to be a gorgeous game that builds and improves on everything the Guild Wars foundation established.

GW2 isnt a MMO imo, too many areas of the game are isolated from other players

GW2 is not even released and the developers have said its open world, so I have to ask where you are getting this info about areas being isolated.

Rift
GW2
SWToR
Tera
DC

As little as 2 months ago I would have had SWToR on the top of my list, with GW2 a close second. But of the 2 beta's I have been able to play in the last while, Rift has taken my top spot.

SWToR is from what we are hearing, completely FUBAR. BioWare scrambling to fly in devs and consultants from other branches around the world to get this thing squared away has me nervous.

Tera is another Korean MMO that is going to be Westernized, judging from the past, this is about a 99% chance for "Suck-fest 2011."

I can say right now DC is a dead donkey.

As it stands now, I think, Rift and GW2 are the only 2 games that are going to have any sort of success and/or acclaim.

My vote goes for SWtoR.
I played rift and i can say wow is 20 times better.
Tera seems to be another Korean dissapointment with improved combat.
Dc universe online is awesome and the combat is outstanding but it feels short.(do we have another Sto here?I dunno but it makes me suspicious)Although i m gonna buy it.
Gw 2 sounds and looks wonderfull but i think the cake does not tastes as it looks.
Maybe it's only my insict but my insict goes with swtor.Simply because it's sci fi and does not have to compete with wow.Furthermore it has voice acting which is fantastic(I experienced voice acting in dc and it's gorgeous).Additionally there is a lot of money spent on this project, which means the best developers are there and it's gonna be huge.
Finally it's Sw and it's gonna kick serious *** cause the lore behind it is just fantastic.
But i dont hold my breath on anything before i test first.
This is simply my opinion explaining why.

None of them really

GW2 is just like GW1 with different quests and a new graphic design. Same redundancy and same ****** company, NCSoft. It's temporary eye-candy, NEW QUESTS ZOMG !! !@!#...and after 3 months you will be able to buy anything you like,so no need to do any work, just short cut it and pay us./.../yawn

Star Wars....this SINK has sucked up so much cash the episode based TV show to be releasing it's pilot in 2011 was canceled... I guess no one told Lucas that 12 million per episode was a bad idea,so with money being an issue for all 3 companies involved and it being yet another potential failure, the released product may be short on meat. I am avoiding it as when I think of it, I shudder and have Vanguard flashbacks.

DC universe...well.....my 7 year old and 11 year old think it's the ****, plain and simple. However, Neopets also makes them smile... I found the game repetitive and dull. 3 months of playing and it was jsut another COH/COV with better graphics and sexier clothing/ Look for it to hang and limp along for a few years, be sold off and relegated to Super hero geek anonymity.

Rift.....so damn annoying. 1st, I win a key for a chance to win a....key.....dumb. I get invited to beta....all 3 days of it....Cool grphics, WOW meets Warhammer with some Shadowbane mixed in with yet even some DAOC. ...and beta done, new email ! Grats !!! Welcome to out BETA !....another 3 day jerk fest. Redundancies galore, repetitive and eye-bleeding redundancy..oh wait, I said that..how repetitive and redundant of ***************** contagious...

Tera...wow, not enough punishment with Aion, people are going to try this too ? HARRO CHINA BOY LIKA GRIND DAY IN AND OUT FO 1 LEBEL...and that will be the games downfall for Americans..westernized ? no..even in our decadent, entitled minded idiocy, even the majority of us won't grind like that...i mean...EQ showed us how we erred in our ways by tolerating that pile...no I haven't forgotten the "Straight up Ballin" prank you played on me SOE,suck the big one.

I think 2011 will be 1 VERY disappointing year.
However, some games worth mentioning releasing in 2011 as follows

Wakfu---best game name ever....horrid Ragnarok clone
The Secret World...so secret they do not know we realize it's vaporware :)
Gods and heroes:Rome Rising...SPARTICUS....SPARTICUS...Gonna play this no matter how GW meets Mythic Rome it looks

Dead Frontier.....because I did NOT get enough of Ultima Online's overhead view..

I could go on,but I think the mods would rather I did not :)

Tera FTW

I think TERA is going to take the cake with these 5. Although they haven't really put much into advert for this game, it is definitely traveling by word of mouth. Also, Rifts "Were not in Azeroth anymore" is a bit... can't think of the word.... well, they are setting them selves up against THE biggest mmo EVER. IF they think that most wow players will come over because it looks nice, they should look at Aion (luls). They are going to need, non boring quests, TONS of instances and endgame content and fairly balanced pvp if they are going to try to compete will Blizzard and wow.
in order?

in this order...
1: DC
2: GW2
3: Rift
4: SW:TOR
5: Tera
...or no order at all?

I got a VIP beta key not too long ago from this site and started playing, and I have to say I love it. The class system is amazing, the visuals are stunning, and I love the rifts and invasion events.

In regards to gw2, I was a huge fan of the original. And while its pvp was great its pve was seriously lacking. so I'm hoping that with gw2 they fix that. the only thing i am kinda peeved about is no more dual classing. That was one of the things that made gw great.

so my list would probably be

1.Guild wars 2
2.Rift
3. SWTOR
4. DC
5. tera
