LOTRO Announces New Expansion: Rise of Isengard

With a new expansion on the way in 2011, we sat down with Turbine to talk about the November Update, LOTRO's Isengard expansion and just how far Turbine will go to make a great F2P MMO experience.

With the future of free-to-play MMORPGs being quite bright in North America, Turbine has decided to raise the ante with the announcement that in 2011 they will be releasing a brand new expansion for Lord of the Rings Online called "Rise of Isengard." But 2011 is just a little bit too far for Turbine to wait to add to LOTRO, so players will be getting a pile of upgrades on Nov. 29 in what they call… the November Update.

Incredible originality aside, Senior Staff Writer Chris "Pwyff" Tom decided to sit down with Adam Mersky, the executive director of communications at Turbine, and LOTRO Producer Aaron Campbell to talk about just how committed Turbine is to making sure their F2P experience stays true to its roots and the Rise of Isengard expansion. First Things First: Rise of Isengard!

When it comes to big expansion packs, both Mersky and Campbell note that while they do enjoy the whole concept of releasing individual adventure packs in a constant stream with Dungeons & Dragons Online, they found that they still wanted to create that epic content package; complete with new landscapes to explore while adding a whole slew of new mechanics and content to the game. In this way, Rise of Isengard will be a traditional expansion pack for players. There will be a level cap increase to 70 with a lot of new content for all players.

In particular, Rise of Isengard will introduce multiple new raids and instance content for those pining for a fresh endgame, as well as some new instance content for the mid-level players around level 30-40. For the more casual players, Turbine has plans to update their cosmetic system with more outfits, more fashion, more slots to put things in, more clothing combinations and the addition of non-combat pets for players to bring around with them in the world.

Head over to the second page, where we discuss the upcoming November Update and Turbine's push to keep their F2P experience awesome.
