Designer Gives Details on Advanced Classes System

Advanced Classes will provide an even greater level of customization in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

It's Friday, which means it's time for another update to the Star Wars: The Old Republic site! Today's update is a blog post by Principal Lead Systems Designer Georg Zoeller that discusses the design elements behind the Advanced Classes system. In case you didn't know, you'll be able to specialize each of the eight classes in the game into one of two Advanced Classes, each of which has access to two unique skill sets. Zoeller provides all sorts of details in his post.

Zoeller uses the Smuggler class as an example to explain how the system will be implemented in the game. You can follow along using the above chart. The Scoundrel Advanced Class focuses on combat and stealth under the Scrapper skill set, and healing and support under the Sawbones skill set. The Gunslinger Advanced Class, on the other hand, is all about ranged attacks. Both Advanced Classes also share the Luck skill set to improve their abilities. Keep reading after the jump for more details!

Another interesting aspect of the Advanced Classes is that they will unlock specialized equipment, such as weapons and armor. As Zoeller puts it, "players will instantly know whether they are facing a Jedi Guardian or Sentinel by appearance alone – even before their opponents showcase their powerful special abilities."

Players won't have immediate access to the Advanced Classes at character creation. You have to find your class trainer on your faction's capital world to choose your Advanced Class, which is a mandatory choice. You have to pick an Advanced Class, so put some thought into how you plan on customizing your character!
