Guild Wars 2 talks about Personal Stories

Ree Soesbee, the Lore & Continuity Designer for Guild Wars 2, wants you to know that your story will be unique

Are you tired of making earth-shattering decisions, only to have the world continue on unchanged? What about wanting to be one of the world's most evilest Wizard's ever, only to realize that the villagers will always love you (mmm, scripted) and nobody will ever be afraid of you? Well, these are exactly the points that the Guild Wars 2 team is looking to fix with their upcoming epic MMORPG. In their latest developer blog entry, Ree Soesbee, the Lore & Continuity Designer for Guild Wars 2 talks about how MMORPGs these days tend to lose a lot of personal interaction that make single-player RPGs fun. Do you remember shedding a tear for Aeris in Final Fantasy 7, or that incredible heroic feeling in Chrono Trigger, whenever they played some epic music? Now look back to your latest MMORPG achievement, and think hard; when the Lich King fell, did anybody breathe a sigh of relief at finally making a difference, or were you more concerned with what sort of crazy items he dropped.

If this has you nodding your head furiously in agreement, then you should go over to the Guild Wars 2 website to check out some of their thoughts on designing a unique, tailored story, complete with past biographical information. Some of the things Ree touches on in his developer blog are really making me interested in Guild Wars 2, and I truly hope that, as he says it, the GW2 team wants you to "build a character, not a character sheet." What a great line! You can read the whole thing at the Guild Wars 2 website.
