Raph Koster Promoted at SOE

Raph Koster, known for his work on Ultima Online and most recently for heading up the team that developed Star Wars Galaxies, has been promoted to Chief Creative Officer for Sony Online Entertainment. He announced his promotion on the SWG forums. What his impact will be on the development for future SOE games like Everquest 2 is unknown. Feel free to discuss your thoughts below. Listed below are some of the posts made by Ralph in the thread: ------------------ So, why was Holocron absent for a month? So, you may have noticed (and in fact, I've pointed out) that I was sort of absent from the boards for the last month or so. Throughout beta and into launch I maintained a much higher profile. So what happened? Well, the short version is, I've been promoted. The press release goes out on Monday. I've been named SOE's Chief Creative Officer. Over the last month, I've been attending meetings related to this change in role, been trying to get my house in shape (I'll be moving to San Diego from Austin), and so on. That's why I've been a bit absent. What does this mean for my involvement with SWG? Well, I intend to remain very involved, to be honest. I've got a lot of work to do remaining with the expansion, the upcoming addition of mount and vehicles and cities, and so on. But I will probably be a bit more erratic in terms of showing up on the boards whenever something comes up related to my new job. To help out with this, we're actively looking for a full-time community person to be on the boards, in dev meetings, and in contact with you guys every day, all day. Still looking... but that's the plan. I'm sure there will be lots of questions about this. We decided that you guys should be the first to know, in advance of the press release. So fire away. I'll try to answer all the questions I can. -Raph Koster, Creative Director -------------------- -SanGreal- wrote: Congrats! 2 Questions: 1) You say you intend to remain directly involved in SWG. Is it still your job to remain involved or are you doing it out of your own interest in the game? Just trying to gauge how much involvement we should expect. 2) Where does this leave our correspondant answers? 1) Both, really. In my new role I'll have some degree of design involvement with every project in the company, but SWG is my baby and I intend to pay special attention to it. Most specifically, there's elements in the current design, upcoming features, and the expansion which are still only in my head, and nowhere else, so I intend to see those through. 2) Same place... you tapping your feet impatiently, us scurrying around trying to get 'em out there. -Raph Koster, Creative Director ---------------------- Breaker-X wrote: *poof*? Leaving? Gone? Just like that? What exactly does a Chief Creative Officer do anyway? Get creative with the SOE offices? Well, the nature of the job is still evolving, but I know I will be helping define pitches and milestone formats, reviewing pitches and milestones, reviewing all the game designs, and hangin' out and being creative. -Raph Koster, Creative Director

if this guy is the creative content behind SWG I hope for LDoN's sake it is done already. SWG has some really neat features, but they are NOT CONTENT driven I assure you that. I beta'd SWG right from Beta 1 thru opening day. I decided very shortly into the game I wasn't gonig to pursue it for a huge LACK of anything...No balance, why bother playing a rebel, eveything you have is inferior to the empire, half the functioning things in the game were ripped out day before it released...GO SONY GO....

I remember Raph Koster as "Designer Dragon" from Ultima Online. He systematically ruined that game with his MUDdled philosophy. He may be respected as a 'knowledge base' for MMPGs but I am not impressed with his decisions.

At least Brad McQuade stuck to his guns, Raph, IMO, changes with the whims of his political masters. Maybe I'm feeling a little bitter, but I used to play Ultima Online from the early days, it was a great game, but it's dead now. I just hope EQ doesn't follow the same sad decline.

For those who want to craft, or mine.

I was in beta, and thank god I was. I was able to cancel my 3 preorders before it shipped.

Its graphics are not all that spectacular, AO is extremely similar.

Gameplay was poor.

And already, a friend of mine who farms in EQ, has created the cartel on his server, many millions of credits, the best weaponsmith, etc etc. He could squeeze every aspiring weaponsmith right out of the picture if he so desired. So much for the vaunted economy. And I have no doubt the same thing has happened on all the other servers already.

Randomly located mob spawn hives get old real quick. And that's about all there is to the PvE side.

So what your saying is...unless you can be a good and better than everyone else, you don't want to play.

SWG's is severely lacking in everything, if this is the guy responsible for the creative 'content' then EQ2 is Doomed....Just don't let him HOSE up the dungeons expansion and I'll be happy.
Don't judge

Don't judge a game you haven't played. Every reviewer has biases. The honest ones will even tell you so.

I was a beta tester for SWG. While the game was far from what I'd call "perfect" (and even farther from what I'd consider "complete"), there were some very compelling things about it.

It is huge. The cities alone put EQ cities to shame.

It is seamless. You can run for hours and never, ever hit a zone line.

It is pretty. The graphics blow away EQ, and run better on my EQ machine than EQ does.

It is highly interactive. Players can build machines, houses, factories and soon even cities.
Players will make a mark on their environment, that other players can see and interact with. This is totally lacking from EQ.

I didn't buy it, because I want to continue to concentrate on EQ, and because it didn't really "grab" me. But it hooked plenty of other people who are having a great time playing it, and I'm sure it will only get better as they add the promised features.

Somebody at Sony obviously thinks this guy knows what he's doing. I can't say they're wrong.

My experiences are from beta as well, so perhaps my comments are not very fair - with that in mind:

<<It is huge. The cities alone put EQ cities to shame.>>

The cities I saw werent THAT big, and most of the buildings in SWG cities serve no purpose, you cant even go into most of them. Only a select few can you even enter, which makes the city "feel" small.

<<It is seamless. You can run for hours and never, ever hit a zone line.>>

Or ever hit anything really. Id wander for HOURS and HOURS and never find anything besides a rare wandering spawn. The world may be huge - but is very empty. I would hope they are filling the world with content as time goes on, but in late stages of beta, there was simply no point in exploring.

<<It is pretty. The graphics blow away EQ, and run better on my EQ machine than EQ does. >>

They are nice indeed, but not mind blowing. Agreed on the point about it running better than EQ, but that opinion is based on a beta player population. But I would venture a guess that since EQ's engine is getting quite old, this would still be true.

Agreed. Im hoping for some sort of compromise soon with the new technology that LDON is bringing - perhaps one day they can include instanced guild or player housing. While this technology wont change the face of the landscape, it could offer something for players to personalize. With SWG, I wonder if they left the world pretty empty so that the players can fill it *shrugs*.

I personally was dissapointed with SWG at the end of beta. Perhaps in 6 months to a year when they fix bugs and fill in some more content this could be a game I would enjoy. Im not sure. Some people are going to love this game and some are not going to care for it.

Don't know much about SWG as it is not my cup of tea, what I do know is that with a game like EQ or SWG that is constantly evolving the people who have the most impact are the developers that actually do the planning and implementation of ideas. Sounds to me like Ralph has big plans for SWG, but that is due to his prior involvement with the game not his new role in the company. Sounds to me like his new role is such that he won't have a large impact in a game overall, but may have large impact in what possible directions the developers would take said game.

Just my 2 coppers worth
