Senior Developers Discuss Melee, Ranged Balance

The Champions Online Daily News blog sat down with senior producer Chris Lena and PvP designer James Laird this week to discuss balancing ranged characters and melee characters. This topic came up following a preview at Kotaku that suggested a ranged hero can simply fly around in a circle spamming attacks while the powerful melee character stands on the ground, unable to do anything.

Lena started off the conversation by saying melee characters do have options at their disposal against ranged heroes, such as lunging or turning off their travel powers. Laird chimed in to remind players that ranged heroes can throw objects and use hold and slow powers.

That being said, they both acknowledged the point raised by Kotaku is valid, which is why the team's trying to make sure melee's not overpowered and ranged characters don't feel vulnerable. Lair also said they're adding a feature to let melee characters mark a target and consume that mark to get a rush of endurance. This will hopfully help balance the ability of both types of heroes to gain endurance at a similar speed.
