Dev Team Answers Faction Change Service Questions

As we reported, Nethaera announced on Monday that Blizzard is working on a service that will allow players to change their faction from Alliance to Horde or Horde to Alliance. Even though this announcement was a "very early heads-up," the upcoming service has received much attention from the WoW community. In response, Nethaera has edited the original post with answers to some frequently asked questions.

You can read the full Q&A after the jump. You'll only be able to switch to a race that has your class type available to it, there's no information on how much it will cost yet, and there will be restrictions on how often you can change your faction.

Q. Will we be able to switch between the races on our own faction?
A.. No. Players will only be able to switch to a race of the opposite faction.

Q. Will I be able to choose the race on the opposite faction that I want to change to?
A.. Yes, but you will only be able to switch to a race that has your class type available to it. So if you play a human paladin, you’d only be able to change to a blood elf paladin.

Q.How much will it cost?
A.. We do not have further information on this at this point in time.

Q.Will I be able to switch back to my original faction but a different race?
A.. No. You will only be able to switch back to your originally chosen race.

Q.. How will the switch between reputation, gear, mounts, etc be handled?
A.. We’ll have more details for you at a later point in time, though we plan to keep these as close to a reflection of the other faction as much as possible.

Q.How often can you change your faction?
A..We do not have any information to share on this at this point in time, however we will have restrictions on the frequency by which players can change their faction.

Q. How will this affect the balance of Horde and Alliance on the realms?
A.. We are taking great care in how we implement this new service in order to maintain balance between the factions on the realms but do not have any further details to share.

I would have rather seen a quest line you could do sort of like Everquest 2. Make it a long drawn out annoying quest that is a huge solo time sink. AT the end it could have something to do with a demi god, the makers (something lore wise I don't know). At the end of the quest line force your toon to die and then give you the option to reincarnate as the new race.

Almost. We do know now that:

1) you must CONVERT your character to opposing factions race
a) which means no defection quest line
b) no horde racials alliance side

2) the service will not allow you to swap races by going one way and then back again

Besides that a whole lot of no more extra info.

We also know that you can CHOOSE what race you want to be, as long as the target race can be the class that you happen to be.

Not necessarily.

They *could* have done something like set up a system where they tried to match up the stats as closely as possible... like, Dwarf Warriors always getting turned into either Orc or Tauren, Draenei/Gnome Mages would probably come out being Undead or Blood Elf, etc.

Or, they could have made it random, to avoid min-maxing that people might do... say if you were a gnome warrior as a noob and you got to 80 and realized that other people do it better than you, they might have said "eh, they might go Tauren for tanking because Taurens have superior tanking racials/stats" etc.

Who knows.

But I wouldn't say being able to choose your race was a "given". There are other ways they could have handled it.
