Scholars: Martial Magicians

From PlayOnline.com:

Wings of the Goddess, the upcoming expansion for FINAL FANTASY XI, will give players the opportunity to discover a new job and an old favorite: the scholar.

During the time of the Crystal War, scholars earned the respect of all ranks of the allied forces with their ability to lead troops to victory using a combination of shrewd planning and resourceful strategies in their positions as tacticians and military officers.

Read on to learn more about the origins of the "grimoire"--the source of a scholar's martial knowledge.

Martial Magicians

War is an act in which force is used to attain an objective. If you lose sight of that objective, the force you have mustered will waver.

First, decide your objective. All of your strategies will develop from there.

[From the preface to Theories of War by Gunther Schultz]

There was once a group of academics that earned the respect of all ranks of the allied forces with their ability to lead troops to victory using a combination of shrewd planning and resourceful strategies in their positions as tacticians and military officers. These academics were known as military scholars.

Their characteristic gowns and hats became symbols of their brilliance as they drove the forces of Altana to victory with strategies evolved in the shade of field tents.
The mysteries of the grimoire--the source of a scholar's knowledge--will now be revealed.

The Birth of the Scholar

The ferocious inferno of knowledge that we know as "magic" will soon fall into the hands of both Elvaan and Yagudo alike. On that day, a war that encompasses both man and woman, young and old, will descend upon as all.

I write this tome in the hope that it will aid in the defense of my beloved Windurst. I pray it never falls into the hands of our enemies...

[From the afterword of the grimoire, by Lungo-Nango]

Martial theory is a field of study that is researched through the historical and practical application of battlefield tactics. Though uncommon these days, there was an age when martial theory was so highly regarded that any scholar was automatically considered to be a "military scholar." That age was the Crystal War.

It was plain to even a child's eyes that the early defeats suffered by the allied forces were due to the overwhelming numbers of the beastmen. However, the leaders of the allied nations were also taken aback by the unexpected sophistication of the beastmen's strategies--an entirely new approach was needed.

Military scholars were suddenly thrust onto the center stage of the war, with offers to become tacticians and operations staff flowing in from every allied army. Of particular note were the advocates of the Gunther Schultz School of Martial Theory, who led Bastok's forces to victory in the Second Battle of Konschtat. Their philosophy that action and knowledge were one and the same prepared them with the capability to respond immediately to any situation with which they were presented.

An irreplaceable resource of the proponents of the Schultz School of Martial Theory, the military text known as the "grimoire" is a unique work. The original manuscript was penned on papyrus by the Windurstian Warlock Warlord Lungo-Nango. He professed unfamiliarity with magic, but after researching its strengths and weaknesses, he put forth a series of unconventional strategies that combined frontal magical assaults by heavy Caster Companies with flanking attacks by highly mobile beast units(*). He was a celebrated warlord with victories on many battlefields. However, after his death, the mages of Windurst narrowed their research to the study of pure magic, and Lungo-Nango's brilliant magical, martial tactics were all but forgotten.

Three hundred years later, the scattered pages of Lungo-Nango's works were collected and added to by Gunther Schultz, and thus a revised addition of the grimoire was born. The practice of copying and improving the tome eventually became an unbroken tradition among the pupils of the Schultz School of Martial Theory.

Perfection of the Grimoire

If your enemy is strong, weaken him with dark magic.
If your enemy is weak, attack him with elemental magic.
If your allies are strong, support them with enhancement magic.

If your allies claim victory, prepare them for the next battle with healing magic.

[From the chapter "Military Expeditions," an addition by Adelheid Sturm]

With the musings and records of a hundred years of scholars crammed between its covers, the grimoire had exceeded its original definition as a tactician's manual, and developed into an encyclopedic source of knowledge. The task of memorizing its contents had become a mammoth task for any aspiring scholar, which defeated the Schultz philosophy of practicality and utility. The person to solve this dilemma was none other than Gunther Schultz II, direct descendant of the famous martial theorist himself. Schultz empowered the grimoire with astral properties, enabling the scholar to command the book to disappear and reappear at will. This allowed proponents of the Schultz school to consult the grimoire at any time, significantly expanding their realm of movement. This flexibility would prove invaluable in the time of the Crystal War...

An inquiring mind and boundless curiosity--these are the traits one must possess if one wishes to tread the path of the scholar.

I just wish I started with a female character 5 years ago...

The AF looks so much better on female characters ; ;

I haven't played a previous FF game that had Scholar in it, but quite a few FF-fans in my LS (mostly JP) are raving on about how cool it'll be.

From the description one of the girls gave, she made it sound like a bookworm type character (on a female character). So I couldn't help myself but make an otaku joke about it (when applied to a male character).

Main weapon: Manga magazines
Ranged weapon: Anime DVDs
Head gear: Keroro Gunsou froggy hat

I don't think she found it funny though... :(
looking too deep

Hi everybody, this is my first post so i hope its a good one

Well on to the topic, after reading most of the post i see alot of people looking into old FF to see what this new job might do, but maybe everyone is just looking too deep ito it, yeah having the scan ability would be lame, why would if have white or black magic, the storyline says a nonmagic user made the book. Maybe we should look into what this job would do in this FF then the old ones. it says that would make tactics baced on the enemies weeknesss to help in the war, what if as you lvled your scan ability got better, from just HP, to elemental weakness, and then to physical weaknesses. suck as blunt ext.
this may be a far out thought but what if thay had the ability to boost your skills baced on the weakness of the monster. Say your fighting a flying monster such as a bat, after "Scan" is seems this monster is weak to pirsing attacks, well lets see /ma "Polearm Mastery 1" <me> and the partys polearm skill would go up by 5, this is just an example but it would seem that a tactision would do something more to this effect then some of the other things i have read in the posts.

well thats what i have to say, don't shoot me down to hard its my first post ^^
intresting job

sooo is this thing going to be sorta like Calculator from final fantasy tactics or what? i donno but i dont really get this stuff i just think ppl should just calm down about the tank job stuff cus there is still one job to be put out. im hopeing something cool like Rune Knight (page all on rune knights)>>> http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=378718

or something like ancient magic useing knight ya know i know it sounds like something from WoW but it still seems pretty cool to think about one thing SE should do is not limit out weapon use to our job so much like in D&D you could be a warrior who uses Katanas not limited by a job that would be cool but you would prolly see everyone running about with one but its just a thought

Think about it for a second.. people complain about EVERYTHING they give you.

But one of the things people complained about is subs...

"OMG! i am forced to sub NIN?!?!?! i cant belive thats the only way to go, i cant belive that all i can do is tank with shadows because *rant rant rant* -tank job..

OMG! i can belive im forced to sub WHM?!?!?!? blah blah blah... - mage job

looks to me like they just released THE PERFECT SUB.

"you can chose to enhance white magic, or black magic, for as long as you would like" it can change the weather? seems like the best sub to me... to stop all your stupid whining about not being godly enough... if you want to be THAT godly goo pllaayyy diiaaabbllloooooo 2....

even after this, people will still cry about how broken NIN is so who cares?

if your going to whine then quit the game for gods sakes please.
and this game is not meant for you to be unstopable.. lol

People like this **** me off, I'm glad you have the gil to level ninja, or should I say money? Cause I don't buy gil, so other than getting parties together for scolls and **** (a big hassle), I have to sub warrior to level my thief, and people like you call me newb, sending /tells to the party leader like "this guy is gimp, lets ditch him". I say stfu, cause I dont have the gil and here I am complaining. Heres the best part, I dont even want to lv Ninja, I just have to cause you need to sub it for Thief, and some douschebags only let me into thier party if i can sub thief with my samurai! How fair is that? "the perfect sub job" my @ss, 75SAM/37SCH yeah a smart samurai thats real good... this job looks almost as useless as dancer.

Spraynard, you irritate me... Stop assuming that every Ninja in FFXI buys gil. You ever heard of farming? If you have a lvl. 75 I suspect you have beast seals and kindred seals... BCNM, KSNM stop being lazy.

Scrolls: Go quest them, they're not that hard to quest or even to solo the mobs that drop them. Utsusemi: Ni too expensive? Can't quest it? Both Royal Jelly and Under Observation are super easy BCNM's and both can have Utsusemi: Ni as a reward.

Sub Jobs: Sub Jobs are a bane in everyones side, but it's just a part of the game. Don't blame others because you are too lazy to level another sub. We ALL have to do it, not just you. You remind me of an infamous WHM/THF...

75SAM/37SCH: Who's to say that 75SAM/37SCH won't be a good combo? Do you have insider information on Scholar abillities? Do you already know what spells/buffs/debuffs that a Scholar might have? Well? DO YOU? /sigh

Dancer: Again... speaking out of the *** about something you dont know nothing about yet.

lol..

ugh, i'm tired of seeing support jobs being made, theres too many already...

they need a new tank-type class, and desperately need a new type of healing class...

you get in the higher lvls and you see 15 dd's seeking, 2 tanks and you never see a healer seeking.

How's making a new Healer job going to fix that? Any job that can heal or hybrid heal/DD can solo decent XP at those higher levels you speak of. So what you'll get in the end is another healer job that'll solo XP instead of waiting 2 hours for your party invite.

What this means is that Lungo-Nango had the qualities of a beastmaster from birth. He was born with the abilities to command beasts, so it's not entirely possible for him to have penned the Grimoire and be a Magic Warlord while possessing abilities of that of a Beastmaster.

Sidenote: Anyone notice how that picture of scholar above looks like Harry Potter?

I for one was slightly disappointed with Dancer at first glance and then when finished reading all there was to it, was very pleased with it!

Scholar has totally assured me that I will not be disappointed with the new expansion!

The whole thought of Atomos controlling a world between past and present, and new crafty tacticians on the front lines just geeks me out >.<

I welcome SCH sole-heartedly and await the announcement of a third job!

But if read the information you would see at the end It says

I am thinking that this job will go good with BST but who knows.
But from what i read it looks like this might be another support type job say like BRD. as they are seeing where we are weak and cast spells on us to make us stronger.

Besides that I am sure someone out there in the world of FFXI will come up with a way were they can make these new jobs a tank.

I'm not quite sure not liking the job selection should be considered full on spazzing. Disliking the garbagey looking new jobs is many peoples right. I personally think the 2 new jobs are silly.

For every 10 "whiners" there's 50 people "whining" for them to shut up. People pay monthly fees to play this game, we kinda earned and paid for the right to **** and moan on some forums if we choose.

Also, assuming someone needs meds just because they don't like a job is pretty meh. I find it pretty ignorant to put down peeps or talk smack because you like the idea of dancing around with a book in your hand. ^^ DNC/SCH

I love, absolutely love, how everyone on these forums has already played the new jobs and experienced the expansion so they can make these judgments. Where would I be without you all?

For those whining, I have a great idea: don't buy the expansion. You act like SE did you some great injustice by releasing new stuff. Frankly, I'd rather have these new jobs to mess with because it adds more variety to the game.

There's no pleasing everyone. Players whined that you couldn't solo enough in this game, so they gave you ToAU. You cry about it. Players whined that CoP was too hard, so SE dumbed it down and removed exp loss in the battles. You not only whined about it, but cried foul because you already beat CoP. WHY DO YOU CARE?!

"SE is releasing another expansion with new jobs!? BLASPHEMY! How dare they expand their games! I must blog about how stupid it is even though I know nothing beyond a vague description in a faux historical article on their site!

Well.. except that none of the jobs they made so far were "more of the same". BLU, COR and PUP in the previous expansion can relate best to RDM, BRD and BST.. but you can't play any of them in the same way and hope to succeed.

Also, all those movies and games you mentioned were money grabs. Very little original creativity included, and no incentive to give respect to them in the first place.

I'm gonna play it. :)

While I agree, it may become a main healer, it will be equipped with the ability to be one. It has White Magic of its own, so /whm won't necessarily be the only way to go.

But, it seems even MORE powerful if there are multiple other mages.

A Scholar can seriously increase damage for a blm. Not only that, but have any tests been done on the effects of weather on a mob? Does it or its special attacks become weaker in certain weather? DO Bar- spells change at all?

And I'm positive there are (or will be) some melee pieces that will be phenomenal if the weather is right, hello Scholar.

Oh, Mr. Summoner... you are using Leviathan? Rain for you!

Hey, that Blm is casting an AM, let me crack open my book...

I cannot wait.
