Sylvari Week: Video Covers Race's Background

It's day three of Guild Wars 2's Sylvari Week and ArenaNet has posted an interesting video that looks at the background of the plant race. Continuity and Lore Designer Ree Soesbee and Character Artist Kristen Perry explain how the sylvari grew from the initial designs into the race they are today. Soesbee even explains what sets the sylvari apart in the fantasy genre:

"There are a lot of poeple out there who say that they've seen everything fantasy games have to offer. But the sylvari are entirely unique. They are new to our world, they are new to every world. There's never been a creature like this in the fantasy genre. People try to match it and say, "is it an elf?" "Is it a dryad?" It's a sylvari. That's what it is. Trust me, you have not seen every story that a fantasy world can tell. Sylvari are new."

Sylvari Week: Dialogue and Audio Clips

It's day two of Guild Wars 2's Sylvari Week! In today's blog post, writer Angel McCoy describes how ArenaNet brings the sylvari to life through dialogue. The entry even features six audio clips that will let your hear the voices associated with this playable plant race.

Think of McCoy's dev blog as a guide to roleplaying the sylvari. It covers everything from their romantic relationships to their first few weeks of life. Since sylvari arrive in the world fully grown, they have no idea what it's like to be born as a vulnerable child.

As far as dialogue is concerned, the writing team identified five personality keystones that defined the sylvari voice: honor, curiosity, empathy, the dream and philosophy. The audio clips included in the blog post will give you a taste of each keystone.

Sylvari Week Kicks Off with Design Blog

ArenaNet has kicked off Sylvari Week with an in-depth blog entry by artist Kristen Perry on the process behind designing the playable race. Her introduction sums up the team's goal for the sylvari:

"Every race in Guild Wars 2 started with a simplified description—a way to describe the essence of the people in a sentence or less. The sylvari description was pared down to just three words: noble, beautiful, plant. In the past, our design iterations would always lean towards one or two of these descriptors, but in the end we really wanted to have a race that would represent all three characteristics clearly."

Read Perry's lengthy blog entry to learn everything you could every want to know about the artistic creation of the sylvari. Keep an eye on the Guild Wars 2 site throughout the week for more details on the race!
