Battlestar Galactica Jumps Past 5 Million Players

Bigpoint announced today that Battlestar Galactica Online "has surpassed five million registered players worldwide since its February launch," following the space combat MMO taking home the title of "Best European Browser Game" at the European Games Award last month.

Bigpoint also used the press release to reveal some new ships that will soon be coming to the game. A new line of Fleet Recon ships will become available for both Colonial and Cylon players this month, while the Brimir Class Carrier is scheduled to launch this fall. The carrier's "size, complexity, and impact on game balance must be optimized before its general release."

Galactica Patch Attempts to Improve Balance

Today's Battlestar Galactica Online update attempts to "improve the balance between the different ship sizes and roles, and to improve the balance between offensive and defensive Systems as they are upgraded." Ships now have Armor values and weapons now have Armor Piercing values. Also, several ship and weapon system stats have been revised.

Battlestar Galactica Gets 1v1 PvP Arena Matches

The latest Battlestar Galactica Online update has added 1v1 PvP Arena matches to the game. These instanced battles come in two flavors: ranked and duels. In Ranked matches, the game’s matchmaking system will help pair players of similar Arena rating, ship size, and class, and let them battle it out in their own private piece of space. The top 100 fighters on each server will earn a special icon above their pilot and ship name.

Alternatively, players who wish to compete against other pilots of any faction, rating, ship size, or class can engage in 1v1 Duel matches. You won't earn any rewards or change your rating, so consider duels as the fun practice run before the ranked matches.

In addition to these PvP options, the patch adds two new star systems to the Veil Sector: Nilfhel and Muspell. These new star systems contain large numbers of high level NPCs, and are intended as hunting grounds for high level players or group.
