I've searched multiple forums and haven't found any information on this so am asking about it here.
Over the last week or two I've noticed varied countdowns on Icy Prism, including 20, 18 and 6 hour cool downs. This became really apparent yesterday when I did one when I got home from work at 4:00pm and it said it had a 6 hour cool down so I did another before going to bed at 11:00pm.
I didn't pay attention to the cool down when I went to bed but I checked it this morning at 8:00am and it said it had 15 hours remaining which would mean from last night it was put on an 24 hour cooldown...
Has anyone else experienced these varying cool downs for Icy Prism and does anyone know what is affecting it? The only thing I thought of which I haven't been able to test is if prospecting affects it as I did 1 stack of Titanium and 2 stacks of Saronite (prospecting) yesterday.

I have noticed it as well, icy prism cooldowns as well as the epic gem transmutes.
I have 2 JC's and 3 Alcimists and since the last big patch i have had totally random cooldown timers.
I have had everything from 25hours to a short 10minutes and everything in between.
i have no idea what is driving the cooldown timers now but it keeps you on your toes.

As of patchday 4.0.1, epic gem transmute resets at midnight server time. I expect Icy Prism is the same.
Correct - I got all happy with my alchy when I discovered that xmutes only had a one hour CD at 11pm one night. >_<

Maybe I'm not understanding the reset at midnight thing but this doesn't explain creating the prism and then immediately seeing a 10 minute cool down until you can do the next one does it?
Also, when I created a prism at 4:00pm and it then showed a 6 hour cool down and it allowed me to create another prism at 10:00pm on the same day.

Are you on a US server? Other regions might have other times. And prism might not be synced with the gem transmute, since it's a different profession and all.
What we're seeing with gems is that the ability doesn't really cool down anymore, it resets at a fixed time once every 24 hours. So if you do it 10 minutes before the reset, you have a 10 minute cooldown; if you do it 12 hours before the reset, you have a 12 hour cooldown; and if you do it right after the reset, you have a 23:59 cooldown.
It'd be nice if the Northrend alchemy research had this reset too. :-p Alas, we still have the 2 day, 22 hour cooldown.
