From about 9 am Wednesday to the same time today: 31,000 gold gross profit off Inscription.

I stockpiled ink for a few weeks, paying about 40 silver per northrend herb on average, so about 2g/ink. (You can trade northrend ink for any other in Dalaran). I didn’t know that the ink cost of glyphs would triple with the patch, or I would have made stacks of glyphs and tripled my stock while cutting my overhead in half. Still, cost to make a glyph: 7g.

My price point was 57g, so about 700% markup. I tried to keep two of each glyph on the market, ignoring people undercutting me unless they were selling for less than my glyph cost, in which cast I bought them out and relisted.

Sales were a little spotty at first, until my competitors had sold out of glyphs and couldn’t get more herbs off the AH. Then the gold poured in.

I ran out of ink myself this morning. Sales had slowed down somewhat, but now my competitors are listing at 70 gold or more--those might be the people who make the real money. I suppose I might have made close to a hundred thousand if I had made glyphs in advance instead of after the patch. But I'm good, and I still have quite a few auctions pending.

Thank goodness I have a toon with inscription. I knew there would be price gouging, but that is a bit crazy. Though I guess it more than fits demand with how many ocd "gotta get em all" type players there are in this game...

Yeah, I'm really wishing I would have invested the time and money into leveling up inscription on my druid before the patch hit. I knew that the market was going to boom to a certain extent, but I had no idea it was going to be this crazy.

I'll go post a suggestion on the beta forums that they make some changes to make inscription useful in some manner for those that have it maxed. If there isn't any benefit to leveling it, people are going to stop doing so and then we won't have any glyphs.

Bwah hah hah. :)

The only issue with it now is that it isn't renewable, people only need to get your glyphs once.

Characters only need to get them once.

There will be two ongoing markets for Inscription: glyphs for new characters and disappearing powder for level 81+ characters. There will also be a surge market every time new inscriptions are released, and possibly a side market in BoE offhands, decks and the like.

Add to that the improved shoulder enchants, and Inscription is in a happy place.

Yeah, yeah. I'll have you guys know that I got hardcore laughed at for posting that thread too. That's what I get for trying to be a helpful beta poster. :-p

The glyph market will drop so the new toon market will not be too lucrative.

The cards, BoEs and etc usually die down around the 2nd tier of raiding.

If people aren't stupid with Auctioneer type auto-gouging on Disappearing Powder it has the potential to be lucrative.

Disappearing Powder can be bought by the Inscription trainer anyways. Unless this is going away in Cata?

I kind of wish I would have been able to play and prepare for this. I could still post some glyphs I have on the market but it would be a pain in the *** right now.

I can see a pretty big influx of new characters right when Cata is released though with people making Goblins and Worgen and trying the new class/race combination.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. Might not be as big of a jump in the market as it was for the first week or so after this patch, but I think it'll still be a good market. Not that it does me any good since I'm waiting to level inscription on my goblin priest. =x

At first I thought inscription was dead, but then I realized, you can have say 3 prime glyphs right. You might "know" every glyph in the game. But all of a sudden say you respec, or something changes, and you need to change a prime glyph. Very common for PVPers who also PVE. You need to OVERWRITE a prime glyph. Overwriting means losing that glyph from your spellbook no? So you'll have to repurchase it at some point right?

I am just going based on memory from when I logged in on patch day. I could be wrong here but I think thats how it works. I also think thats how it works with majors and minor glyphs but that I haven't tested.

So you unlearn some popular glyph. Now you have to buy it again. If that is true it gives me some renewed hope in the profession because people like me change glyphs ALL THE TIME. When i was making big money with inscription I often wondered what my buyers were doing. Were these glyphs for a new character? A fresh 80? Or were many of them like me, constantly buying and overwriting new glyphs? Anyone who PVPs and PVEs seriously will change glyphs all the time. You simply cant PVP in your PVE glyphs or vice versa if you even care remotely about min-maxing. And hardcore players will even change up glyphs within those specialities. Some raiders I sold to or guildies I talked with even changed glyphs depending on certain fights. When fan of knives glyph was an increase to damage, that was a huge DPS buff on specific AOE encounters, but utterly useless on single target encounters where another glyph would have boosted DPS instead.

So I dont think inscription is "dead" yet there will still be a strong demand for replacing glyphs. And of course completionists who need every glyph for every character. But I think even once you know every glyph, you'll still wind up purchasing and repurchasing certain glyphs many many times over unless I am just totally wrong on the whole mechanics of glyph swapping.

No, that's not how it works. That's how it worked before the patch. Now, once you learn a glyph, you know it forever. But you have to use the specialty dust to change each glyph.

I still have pretty high hopes for Inscription honestly. Sure there's a few people out there like you Mike, who change their glyphs all the time. I think that the vast majority of people don't though. Most people change their glyphs whenever their class/spec changes a bit. Like mages for example, at the start of Wrath, fire was the highest dps spec, then a patch or two later arcane was, then later frost became pretty viable as a raiding spec, etc. There are a lot of people out there that are going to want to learn every glyph though. Especially since there's an achievement in Cata for knowing something like 25 glyphs in your spellbook. Plus whenever people level up new alts they're going to want to get all the glyphs for those toons as well. I actually expect that glyphs are going to make more money in the future than they did prior to 4.01
Of course I could be completely wrong, it's hard to know for sure until it actually happens.

Oh, see I thought vanishing powder removed the glyph from your spellbook. So yeah you guys are right, once people are set with their glyph setup there won't be as many sales.

But I still think it has good potential for earning gold. It comes down to whether you're willing to learn all the glyphs and spend a bit of time daily at making gold. As sales slow down I only see markups continuing to skyrocket. I won't be surprised to see average price of 'good' glyphs kind of stabilize around 70g. Most peoples fallback is around 50g right now, I can see it being more like 70-80 in Cata.
