A few questions before I waste a lot of time:
1. Is the quest still required to become a Master of Elixers?
2. From my understanding you must go to the Black Morass (CoT) - is this something I need to unlock?
3. Is there any way to skip this quest. I remember, a long time, ago hearing that you could sort of trick the system by becoming a Transmute Master - then changing. Is this true? If so, how do you do it?
Any other suggestions?
I'm quasi-power leveling an alt. I have a 450 Herb, so I'm playing the AH & Gathering.

The quest is still technically required, but as you suggest in #3, you can game the system for a slight extra price.
From what I understand, the biggest hurdle in the quest is that it can only be performed with repeated (certainly at least three full clears, how many more depends on RNG and probably if there are others there for the same reason) runs of Black Morass. And unlocking BM requires having successfully completed a quest in the Old Hillsbrad CoT instance. Which in turn has some other requirement to get in, I think another quest. It was the most painful mastery to get back in the day, and with fewer people going there now combined with how it's not extremely solo-friendly, it probably still is.
The light in the tunnel is that it's very easy to get through the tradesman's entrance. Just get one of the other masteries, then talk to the same guy you learn it from. He'll unlearn you the mastery for a one-time fee of 150g. Then you can talk to any of the mastery trainers and you can pick up the mastery they grant, no questions asked. I just did this a few weekends ago (switched Transmute to Elixir, then back, when I found a lot of cheap Frost Lotus and made a mess of flasks in one sitting).

Just do the Transmute quest, then drop it..and then become an elixir master.

It's unfortunate that Blizzard did things like this and the Lock/Paly mount quests (Yes, I know those quests are no longer needed) Not only is Black Morass a relatively high up in TBC - it's also an attunement-type instance and no one actually opens it up these days. Instances like HoL and HoS and other high level instances in wrath will no longer be run by people...
Hopefully Blizz doesn't continue to make this mistake.

Yeah, you can just do the xmute quest then drop and swap.
The real PITA that Blizz needs to fix is swapping the specialties - you've still gotta go back to Outlands and fly all over heck's half acre to talk to different trainers - they really need to just let the Dal spec trainers teach you, or at least let you swap once you've learned one spec.

i read a while a ago, someplace, that specialities, (elixir, transmute, weaponsmith, ..everyone in fact) will be a thing of the past in cata. Wether this is true or not is anyones guess.. preferably anyone with beta access and a high proffession level..
I wish I would have known all of that before I painstakingly spent the time to run BM for the quest line just to get Elixir Master.
