I'm afraid I'm a bit confused why there are two sets of width/height settings. Clearly one is the size of the display, in my case 1600x1200, but what's the '3D' size for?

The display size is the actual resolution of your screen (called the "Overlay" in the FFXI config util) and the 3D size is the resolution that the game draws the 3D graphics at (called the "Background" in the FFXI config util)

FFXI draws the 3D graphics independantly of the actual screen resolution. The 3D graphics are drawn to an offscreen block of display memory which is treated like a video overlay (the menus and text are drawn to the display not to this offscreen block of memory). Thus if you set your display resolution at 1280x960 and the 3D resolution at 640x480 the game will draw the 3D graphics at 640x480 and then stretch the image up to 1280x960. And like a video overlay it gets blurry when you do this (it's just like blowing up an image in photoship with bilinear interpolation scaling). When you do the opposite and draw the screen bigger than the actual display it does the exact opposite, it scales it down, this is basicly supersampling which is a form of FSAA (ideally you want an even multiple of the display resolution, because of the 2048 limit this almost always means 2x the display resolution unless you use somthing stupidly small such as 640x480 for your display size)

This is also why setting FSAA in your video card's drivers does nothing, FFXI is drawing the 3D graphics to an offscreen chunk of display memory rather than to the display buffer. When you turn on FSAA your video card FSAAs your display, which does exactly nothing because while the menus and text are all drawn to the display buffer the 3D graphics aren't and your video drivers have no way of knowing this.

Most people want to set the display size and 3D size to be exactly the same but unfortunatly FFXI's config util won't let you do this. You can set the display size to anything you want but the 3D size is limited to 256x256 (yuck) 512x512 (also yuck) or 1024x1024 (yuck if you use a display size larger than 1024x768 - and even at 1024x768 it's bad because you're drawing extra pixels for no good reason) However, you can edit the values in the registry and set it to be whatever you want. I have no idea why SE won't just allow this in the FFXI config util, it's completely retarded that it doesn't.

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:

I think it's because a lot of the player base barely know how to use a computer properly, let alone what all the values and what not are for. If they let em modify the values through the config utility, then SE would probably have thousands of calls to their Tech Support daily for: "Why does teh FFXI only render teh one block of color to teh screenz nowz when itz supposedz to look teh uber 1337z!?!?".

This is pretty sweet looking. Also I don't know much of this but I know some. Is there a place anywhere I can learn more of this? I'm not able to go to college yet so...

Actually, even if the post is at 5.00, rating a post up still improves a person's overall karma.

Nice . . rate up.

Does make some changes, though barely noticable in some areas. Yet to see if it sorts out any graphic lag issues/jerkiness but thanks for the info - always nice to make something look sweeter than it already is.

Put bump on 256, not every texture has bump. I've found bump map in windurst, xarcabard, ule range, beau glacier, and a couple other places I forget. note, the sun needs to be up, it's basically a fake shadow/light map, it's based on the sun being up and where it is in the sky. note, it will hamper your fps on anything but a high end card.

edit: it's not even a very good bump map as far as they go, the problem is SE really stretched out their textures in some areas, and the 'bump' ends up being huge blobs of color.

Windows died, whats new, and I ended up having to reinstall it. All of my programs including FFXI were untouched. My problem is I don't have any of the registry entries for it so it won't run. I was wondering if someone could post or, link to, a list of all the entries or possibly a link to an exported reg file. I need everything from PlayOnlineUS down. I have filled in everything I could from whats in this thread but its not everything. I would really appriciate it because I dont want to spend the half hour reinstalling and 8 hours downloading the updates. And yes, I know reinstalling would probably be faster than waiting for a reply here but I'm away from home and don't have my FFXI cd's.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Are you getting Error Code = 20008014 when trying to run POL too? I'm trying to request un-touched registry codes in this thread. Hopefully we can get some replies soon :3

Just a quick question. When I go into my registry to try and edit these settings I find I only have 2 files in the folder.

Name.........Type...............Data
(Default)....REG_SZ..........(value not set)
bFirst.........REG_BINARY...00

And there's really nothing to edit in either of those files, just "0000" in both of them.

The folder I'm in is:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlayOnlineUS\SquareEnix\FinalFantasyXI

Any help would be awesome. TYIA!

Double check your path. your probably in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlayOnline not in PlayOnlineUS
#42 Mar 23 2006 at 2:52 PM Rating: Decent
Nope, I'm in PlayonlineUS. I even checked the Playonline folder, and there was only 1 file in there, the (default) file. So I'm really at a loss here...

Have you ever set anything using the FFXI Config program? Perhaps nothing's in there before that's used. (I have no idea if that's the case, but it's something to try at least.)
#44 Mar 23 2006 at 2:58 PM Rating: Decent
lol, I just loaded up the FFXI Config program and it brought up the window w/ the FFXI banner and all, but the block was blank. Just had 3 buttons on the bottom of the window, Default, Help, and OK.

I havent updated FFXI yet at all. I installed POL, FFXI, Zilart, and COP, and updated POL but wasnt able to update FFXI yet (not enought money to pay for my account, was on PS2). Could that be the cause? I can't imagine that would have anything to do with it (Especially w/ the Config tool) ...Just weird...

But specific to this thread:

I think cool, I'll have to play around with this. Mainly because I run a 16:10 display (my windows resolution is at 1920x1200), to my suprise I found I can adjust the ratio in FFXI to 16:10 and I run the game at 1600x1024, it looks pretty nice, but I was always bothered that the '3D graphics' were at 1024x1024 so I figured I'd try and manually change the X coords to 1600 to match the background, while I was at it I bumped up the MIPs to 2. I could see a nice improvement at the character selection screen, characters seemed rounder and trees in the background had better detail. Woot! so I select my mule, log into mog house get some money from AH, and went to zone to Bastok Markets....zzzzzzzzz, crash back to windows, hmm, maybe the game doesn't like the re-ratio'd 3D graphics, so I change that back to 1024, I bump the MIPs upto 3. Go in select my mule, bang, crash back to windows. Hmmm ok change MIPs back to 1, try to log in with mule....boom back to windows. I give up, maybe something is wrong with that zone I figure. I log in with my main (settings are back to original now) in Jeuno, I put a party together we go to Bibiki Bay for a couple hrs. no problems whatsoever, party ends, and I go back to jeuno, log go to mule...zzzzzzzzzzz, black screen of death, had to hit reset button on the computer.

I guess I'll start with does anyone think the changes in the registry could be related? (IE will it support 16:10 3D graphics at that resolution?) Or the MIPs #?

This seems like a stupid question, but here goes:

I know what constitutes a "high end setup" these days, but given that FFXI came out in 2002, what would be "high end" enough for these registry modifications?
#47 Mar 28 2006 at 9:57 AM Rating: Decent
I brought this up in another thread about these registry tweaks, but since this one is getting bumped lately, here it is again. 2048 is not the maximum for 3D height/width. If it ever was, it's been changed, but I suspect it's hardware/driver dependent. Someone else in the other thread reported that they do crash if they try anything over 2048, but I've been able to set it to 2560 (twice my display width). I didn't try anything higher than that, as the FPS was bad enough.

pirahna~back when i was running on those on-board graphics and i had to use the 3D-A program to run FFXI or else it wouldnt work, i also had a blank window when i brought up the FFXI config. i got a new gfx card a while back and brought it up and everything was there. so it could be a gfx card/driver issue.

Pirahna - definately an unsupported graphics card. Same thing happened to me until I changed cards.

Just wondering.. wasnt there more registry guides that have been posted before? All about res and so, even some 3rd party tools that helped do this?

Just wondering if I missed something, cause I thought I had set most of what I needed awhile back.
