The FFXIV server issues are nearing the end of my tolerance. It's a shame that this launch has been so ridiculously awful, because they did such a good job revamping the game. But this has definitely gone beyond what is acceptable launch woes. I'm willing to put up with a lot of server issues, but this are well beyond what you should see, and it's been a week since release (not counting the days of early access).

And considering they only even allowed for a super limited beta period, that's an issue. I have no clue why a company would skimp on a beta in this day and age. I get it, you don't want people to burn out early. But to actually make money, you need a game for them to pay for...

Did they do an open beta stress test? That kind of thing seems pretty standard these days.

Yeah. And all the issues they're having now appeared then, and it almost seems like they didn't bother preparing to handle an increased load. It's like they assumed nearly everyone in the stress test wasn't going to play the game.

To give some context, the lobby server, which hosts you after authentication and before you get into the game, keeps going down. People can't get into their worlds, so they all congregate there, and it crashes. That's new to post-launch. Their queue is also hilariously small. Essentially, once you get placed in the queue, you'll be in the game no later than 30-60 seconds later. But you might spend hours attempting to just get placed in the queue.

It's easily the worst launch I've ever experienced. And I was in the Cataclysm beta.

It's a shame, because they've done a really good job with the actual game.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Okay, so the thing about this one particular login error (1017) is that it typically appears pretty quickly after attempting to log into your world. But sometimes it'll give you a loading screen for 1-4 seconds, and you think you're actually getting in, and then SURPRISE.

The irony is that the failure is about as expected as aggression from Doakes.

Looks like something I'd be interested in. Kind of a Kickass type storyline.

The real shame is people actually believed an MMO launch wouldn't be a disaster. It's pretty much standard at this point. The only smart thing to do with any release is to adopt a "wait and see" practice with them, but unfortunately if everyone did that then these bugs wouldn't be discovered and the game would probably be canceled due to low interest. There's no winning.

I expected it to be as bad as any other launch, sure. But this is so, so much worse than anything else I've experienced. It's like the population of players is many, many times higher than what they expected and prepared for.

It's obvious that no company is going to pay to have servers set up for a launch load they'll never hit again. But it feels like these servers aren't even remotely up to the task of managing their normal load.

The maintenance today (one week after launch) is adding new worlds and more servers to support the existing worlds.

More worlds don't really solve the problem of wanting to play on the already full servers with the people you were expecting to play with in the first place unless they offer free server transfers as well.

Apparently server transfers will come later.

But they're also adding additional server support to the existing servers, and raising the cap for the number of concurrent connections on those servers. Right now, it's 5k per. Don't know what they're raising it to.

the best admin is the one you don't notice doing anything at all and is in fact indistinguishable from the worst admin ever.
