Too late to join?Follow

I have an older copy of EQ2: Rise of Kunark that I recently came across on a shelf of unplayed games. I've also had MMO fever lately after about 8 months away from the genre. In any case, I signed up for a Free trial of EQ2 before registering the game and subscribing to give it a try before committing to anything. I also noticed that the community here on these boards are surprisingly helpful unlike some other communities that I've seen so I had a couple of quick questions.

I've played several other MMO's in the past, WoW, FFXI, SWG, and Age of Conan. I'm just wondering how the learning curve is in EQ2. Also, has the majority of the player base reached the level cap leaving the lower and mid range content sort of barren?

Also, I really enjoy the social aspect of these games, but also like having the option to Solo. I've read in several places that Soloing is an option in EQ2, is it a fun option?

Last, but not least, I noticed that there are a TON of different class options in this game. How is the Conjuror and Necromancer classes? These are the most appealing to me so far, does the good or evil decision make a huge impact? I don't know if there are more characters on one side more than the other or if its just race preference.

Anyways, Thanks for reading and to anyone that puts any effort into replying. I'm really looking forward to indulging in the game and can't wait to get started.

It's never too late to start! Seriously, grab the Trial and dive in and see.

I mostly play solo, I love it.

I would say yes, but dont let that discourage you! Level 1 - 9 chat is always alive with activity. Those who have max characters also have lower alts (for crafting or whatever reason). Plus, unique to EQ2, is the mentoring system. It doesn't matter what the levels are when it comes down to grouping. You're level 5 and the closest person is 90? No problem! They can mentor you (which gives you a sweet xp bonus) and help you in tough areas without breaking a sweat.

Every zone except dungeons. And trust me, thats a lot of zones! In fact even if you get a few levels above the dungeons you may be able to solo them (since you like the Conj/Necro, and I play one, I can safely say we can solo those zones). It's as fun as you make it out to be. Like if you try to do every single quest in an area, you may get bored of that area since some spots have a plethera of questing to do.

Personal taste is what it all boils down to. There are some slight differences between Conj's and Necro's (Conjs get the popular Call of the Hero, us Necro's get a health based very powerful dot). As far as race goes, that makes no difference. You can start out as a Dark Elf Necro, and then at level 10 betray to a good aligned city and become a Dark Elf Conjuror, or an Elf Conjuror becomes an Elf Necro...or, well you get the idea. As far as 'more characters per side' that would only be relevant on the PvP servers, and I have no experience with those so I'm sorry I can't give you any info.

I just started playing (again) in September '09. There are a few low level characters running around. Quite often they're alts of players with max level characters.

I haven't had a big problem soloing, grouping with guild mates (either mentored or playing alts), or grouping with friends. Most of the content in the leveling areas is soloable until the end of a quest chain, where it's either a difficult solo or a pretty easy duo.

Lots of times on Blackburrow I'll see players looking for group "willing to mentor", so don't be shy about taking them up on that if you're lonely or bored. Join a guild as soon as you find one that seems nice.

You'll find the players a bit more mature than in WoW, or at least I have. Less spammy, more laid back.

Thanks for the great replies. I went ahead and registered for the free trial and after 10 levels I can already tell that I'm going to really enjoy this game. I think for now I'm going to take the opportunity to try out a lot of the different classes to find out what I like but I definitely think that I have a future in this game. The guild recruitment tool sounds pretty interesting, I'm excited to check that out and see if I can get involved with a guild.

Thanks again for the replies, it got me really excited to play and so far the game is living up to the hype.

Any suggestions on when I should start leveling a tradeskill?

IMO, the sooner the better. Although if you're just on a trial now, it might not be as important. You could still do it to get the hang of it. Tradeskills in EQ2 are a bit more complex than some other games.

You'll probably want to be able to harvest your own materials, and unless you want to be running back to zones you've outgrown with your adventure level, it can be a good idea to try and keep you tradeskill level close to your adv. level. This also help is you plan on using your tradeskill for your own advantage (i.e., you're a scout class, so you pick jeweler to make your own combat art upgrades.)

This site is the best for learning about tradeskills. (sorry Zam folks Smiley: frown)

You can begin on the island and any time before level 10 is not too early! Your crafting tiers will run parallel to your adventure level so if you plan to craft something that is of use to your character(s) you'll need to play catch-up until you can reach your current adventure level. Fortunately that is not very hard while you're still in T1!

You can collect T1 materials on the island and you can craft in the crafting instance below the wizards tower (if you're on Qeynos island). There must be places for you in the other starting areas as well but I don't know where they are. If you want to wait till you reach the mainland you'll be able to craft in any of the ethnic villages (for Qeynos or Freeport) or near the housing area in any T1 starting area. The onus if you wait till reaching the mainland is that there is a great series of crafting quests that will guide you from scratch to lvl 10 in no time at all.

Either way, good luck and have fun!

That beginning crafting quest is always available. Just remember to answer "let's start with harvesting" so you get the 12-slot harvesting bag. For a newbie 12 slots is a great deal for free!

Well, i'm officially hooked, I've gotten two characters up to level 20 already. Really enjoyed the Conjuror, but the Paladin was pretty boring. I decided to wait on trying out the tradeskills until I registered my own version and started a character for real. I'm excited to try out a few more classes, the Shadowknight I started this afternoon seems to be fun. I'm really just trying to find something with good damage output and survivability for solo questing. I'm also excited to try out some dungeons and find a good guild. The community in the game seems great.

Good DPS + survivability = druid! Seriously, a toon that can output decent damage and self heal is ideal for solo. Add to that the fact that both druids get a series of ports to make zone 2 zone travel instant and you have a really strong solo character. And as a bonus, when you get to the group content, a good healer is ALWAYS in demand. Set, game, match - druid!

Sounds like it's time to try a fury and a warden! I really didn't enjoy my play through of Swashbuckler last night. Shadowknight is still in the running too.

Time to get playing and not stop until it's time for bed! :)

Shadowknights are fun. Necros are sort of casty SKs.

Wizards get ports too, if you don't mind root -> cast -> cast as your rotation. Actually for some stuff it's just cast -> splat.

But yeah, I loves my little warden.

I'm on Blackburrow. Dragged a couple of friends from WoW over with me, and we're having a blast.

Plus I get to chat with the lovely and talented Nadenu.

I did roll on AB, I've been spending what little time I've had to game this past week all on my Fury. My normal name was taken, but Shadran is doing quite well. Level 15, haven't started tradeskills yet, but I've just been enjoying the quests so far.
