you can also add to tips that NPC doesn't aggro sight/sound mobs (haven't tried magic-aggro ones).

I'm waiting until my NPC gets to the point where she can use AoE WSs. Will she know not to use it with other mobs around (probably not) and will it effect other mobs?

NPC: Attention! Weapon Skill ready!
Me: Ok, just be careful and don't use...
<<NPC uses Spin Attack>>
<<NPC aggros 5 other mobs>>
Me: Bad mithra! Bad!

if you're so interested in weapon numbers, why not look at the level and see why GS does more than the GAs

does this mean you think GS is better than GA for NPC for the first 2 updates so far? for the second GS update, it will cost 20k, i dont want to spend gils on that if GA actually does more damage than GS does.

Actually the way our NPC works it really seems the weapon level doesn't matter what does is the damage, speed and WeaponSkill it uses. I gave my NPC the Great Katana and the first skill it used was Tachi: Hobaku when it got TP so in that short time it took to get 100 tp it could use a level 30 WS. That would be the fastest skill up in the history of FFXI.

So Great AXE vs Great sword the Great Sword edges out the AXE based on damage and speed because it is higher level and is the upgrade path I will take next. Great Katana -> Great Sword for me now if the NPC can use sturmwind that WS could push it over the top for damage but that is random I rather better DOT then random spikes of damage myself.

So far NPC at 33 and climbing a Healer running around with a Great Katana and I swear Mithra that loves to show up in subligars ;).

Just a couple things I noticed last night with my NPC by the Yhoater crystal. Mine is "Attacker" style and using a Claymore.

It was said in the earlier thread that possibly the NPC get's exp from performing abilities to get exp. This has come from people with "Healer" style NPC's and have leveled up after casting a spell not even in battle. Well I think (at least with attacker style) you might be able to get exp from performing actions "on" your NPC. After killing a Crawler, I thought maybe my NPC was poisoned so I casted Poisona on it. Well the NPC wasn't and got the "Poisona has no effect on ..." But the weird thing was she leveled up to 31 immediatedly after doing that. So either it's massive lag between the battle being over and leveling up, or their exp is based on performing specific actions or having things performed on them.

The other thing I noticed is the Attacker NPC apparently has the "Double Attack" ability (like a lot of mobs do), because she'd occasionally get two swings in with her Great Sword. Had great fun SC'n with her after I finally found a staff skill that chained with most G Sword WS's she was using. I found Starburst chains great with it.

You can also buff your NPC with Protect and Shell but not protectra and shellra etc.

# 19) A guy in my LS has his NPC dual-wielding, so it is possible. He said that he THINKS that the weapons that he traded (both at the same time) were Saparas (lvl 7 scimtar), but he says that he was very tired and drunk at the time... If trading these 2 together doesn't get your NPC dual weilding, try drinking until 3 a.m. and then trade something and see if that works, lol. If indeed saparas DO dual weild, then it is possible that other weapon types which are not the ones listed for single-wield will also work when traded in pairs. Let me know how you get on (i'm sticking to GKT and GSD for now).

I posted this here, just incase anyone misses that it has been updated.

There is indeed terrible lag sometimes when your NPC levels up (up to 10 seconds!).

Hey I have a question. Let's say you give your NPC a uchigatana for his first weapon, when it comes to the second weapon, can you not give a katana and give the lvl20 great sword instead?

Very nice. Thank you for taking your time to make a database of the info. I tried looking at that other thread and it made me want to gouge out my eyes lol.

I thought this was already in, but upon checking, it isn't. I've added it now though.

Once you are able to upgrade your weapon, you may upgrade to ANY of the rank 2 weapons without having to first give the rank 1 weapon of it's class.

I traded Luto a Great Axe yesterday and my NPC (lvl31) will do Sturmwind and also Iron Tempest ... it also did either Armor Break or Shield Break, but I forget which one. Overall it did Sturmwind almost 80% of the time.

I'm still unclear about the entire downgrading equipment thing. The second trip with both our Mithra, my wife and I had our NPCs decked out in Mythril armor. Our last outing, which would be the fifth one, hers was in her starting gear (healer class, if it makes a difference) and mine (attacker class) was back in scale armor.

The first time, I accidentally dismissed mine, but it didn't seem to have much of an effect on the course of things. They haven't died, and neither have we. So far, we've leveled them in Rolanberry, Valkurm, Bibiki Bay (twice) and Yuhtunga, acquiring a total of two levels each. Any ideas?

Oh, and ours seem to be asfixiated on Flat Blade... Definitely switching to something else. x.x

dropping your pearl and getting a new one supposedly can downgrade your armor. Especially if you did it since the update an hour and a half ago.

When you meet at the RP, the first option is to talk to your NPC. Has anyone gotten a response other than "Remember that girl we saved in Eldieme? I wonder how she's doing?" or "How about that dragon in Ghelsba, what in the world was a dragon doing there?" I've only called Zenji 4 or 5 times, so he probably doesn't like me enough to ask me out to dinner, but the girl and dragon are all he ever talks about.

I was just wondering if anyone has found out what the next shield upgrade is. I went ahead and gave my NPC the same sword and shield she started with.

I already upgraded (or down graded..) her sword, so now I just need to find a shield to give her. I'll post what it is if I find out later.

Peace

Edit: The shield up grade is a shell Shield.

I don't know if this was said, but I dont think NPCs aggro anything. . .

Also, will all one handed weapons dual wield or just katana? As you said your friend was a little drunk so I dunno... Mines been using a great katana so far, but I got a new one today so I havent decided if I wanna keep a GK with her this time.

# 6) You cannot trade equipment to upgrade your NPC's armor. They upgrade automatically as you do well in combat, and downgrade if it dies (and possibly if you die, too).
I'm fairly sure their armor is just for show. My NPC has yet to die, and she's gone from Lv40 body armor, to RSE1, to Chocobo Jack coat, to Traders Saio, to Chain Mail, and back again. I believe after each call, two pieces change randomly.

When Lvling my NPC in Altepa, I noticed that if the NPC got killing blow, I got more drops.

I was lvl 67 RDM/BLM.

Maybe because the mobs are closer to her lvl? IDK?
Seeing as relative level has nothing to do with drop rate, no (unless she got you a beast/kindred seal off a too weak :P).

Very nice guide, glad someone put this together. :) Just one thing I'd like to add, sorta in reference to the discussion above..

Tip: When choosing a weapon for your NPC, take into consideration that there's no way to control which weapon skill your NPC will use (that we know of so far, anyways). Yes, it would be nice to have an NPC with a greataxe using Sturmwind all the time, but chances seem pretty even that you'll get one of the lousy break WSes instead just as often. Along the same lines, if you decide to go hand-to-hand, don't forget that the reason these weapons are so effective on MNKs is the Martial Arts trait (reduces innate delay), which the NPCs seem to not have.

I'm very interested to know if anyone has more info on this as well. Also, when I talk to Luto again, I'm asked if I want to 'quit this task'. I don't recall my original conversation..so I'm not sure if I'm suppose to be on a quest or not. Anyone know?

Choosing end this task gets rid of your NPC. You can use this if you decide that you chose the wrong race to effectively help you i.e. you chose a galka but now decide you want a taru healer.

You have to redo the quest again if you choose this option, then start from scratch on levelling your NPC.

in my personal openion I think the NPC being out 15 fights (or 30-45 minutes) and then having to wait 20 hours to call it back again is kind of unfair. and not being able to call it in dungans seems like a bad idea as well, what if a pt needs the NPC as a short time replacement while they are looking for another person just to keep exp going and they are in lets say Kuftel tunnle, I have been in parties where I have waited hours just for replacments to parties, these NPC's would help that IF they where able to be called in dungans for longer then 30 or so minutes
