Since the most informative thread about NPCs is getting very large, I've put the main points for beginners/strugglers here, adding all info to the first post to save ppl having to scroll through pages of info.

# 1) First the weapon guide, posted by Fastcart (thanks)

Quote:
These are from ffxio:

Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are the weapons Luto will accept after the first five or six (could be more, could be less) calls:
Cesti (level 1) (Hand-to-Hand)
Bronze Knife (level 1) (Dagger)
Xiphos (level 7) (Sword)
Claymore (level 10) (Great Sword)
Bronze Axe (level 1) (Axe)
Butterfly Axe (level 5) (Great Axe)
Bronze Zaghnal (level 1) (Scythe)
Harpoon (level 1) (Polearm)
Kunai (level 1) (Katana)
Uchigatana (level 12) (Great Katana)
Ash Club (level 1) (Club)
Ash Staff (level 1) (Staff)

Note: Trying to trade two Kunai (katana) for dual weild will not work. The NPC will just use a Kunai and a shield.

These are the second set of weapon upgrades Luto will accept after the first twelve (could be more, could be less for some people) calls:
Bronze Knuckles (level 5) (Hand-to-Hand)
Bronze Dagger (level 1) (Dagger)
Bronze Sword (level 1) (Sword)
Two-Hand. Sword (level 20) (Great Sword)
Brass Axe (level 8) (Axe)
Greataxe (level 12) (Great Axe)
Brass Zaghnal (level 10) (Scythe)
Bronze Spear (level 7) (Polearm)
Wakizashi (level 7) (Katana)
Tachi (level 8) (Great Katana)
Bronze Hammer (level 5) (Club)
Ash Pole (level 5) (Staff)

Note: Same deal with Wakizashi (katana) as Kunai for dual weild. The NPC will just use a Wakizashi and a shield. Yes, some of the second stage weapons are retrogrades as oppose to upgrades.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

# 2) Next, you CAN trade shields, if you want to use a single-handed weapon, though I don't know of anyone who has bothered.

# 3) If you click on your NPC and it says they are going to leave, you have 10 seconds to click on them again to make them stay.

# 4) For your NPC to gain exp, you must be fighting a mob which you would get exp from if you were the level of your NPC, so any mob below 19-21 (ish?) will not give your NPC any exp from the start and that level will obviously increase as your NPC's level increases.

# 5) The mob that you fight does not need to give you any exp for your NPC to gain exp!! e.g. If you are lvl 75 fighting lvl 40 mobs, your NPC will gain exp, even though they con twtbw to you!

# 6) You cannot trade equipment to upgrade your NPC's armor. They upgrade automatically as you do well in combat, and downgrade if it dies (and possibly if you die, too).

# 7) You cannot use your Pearl to call your NPC in any area that a BLM can use escape from i.e. only in "outside" areas, not in dungeons, towns or "arenas". However, this does not include areas that have to be unlocked via missions.

# 8) You can first change the fighting style (NPCs don't have conventional jobs) after you have called your NPC (used the signal pearl) 3 times.

# 9) You can first give your NPC a new weapon after 6 (or possibly 5, anyone tried it after 5?) calls, by talking to Luto (?) the NPC who starts the quest in Upper Jeuno, then trading the weapon to her (not your NPC, nor do you need to go to the rendezvous point).

# 10) You can upgrade your weapon (it seems) after 13-14 calls (unless it's exp-based or no. of mobs killed with 1st weapon, or no. of days).

# 11) You cannot equip ranged weapons.

# 12) After about 19 calls, you can get the option at the rendezvous point to switch headgear. It appears that it's either worn or it's not, but it's possibly that it's headband or hairpin (which wouldn't show up) but the only ppl who have mentioned getting this option use their NPCs as a healer.

# 13) You can target your NPC in macros using <ft>. I have tried a million combinations to see their hp, tp and mp, but it doesn't look like it can be done ;.; .

# 14) This is an odd one... my NPC used Tachi: Kagero while I was lvl 14... it is a lvl 100 skill, so she should have been lvl 33 to use it, not 14. Even more bizarely, she is only lvl 30 uncapped still as I have not levelled her with a high job yet. Strange, huh?

# 15) Rendezvous points are:
Jeuno - Ru Lude Gardens, turn left and it's just in front of the wall before at the corner.
San D'Oria - Northern SanD'Oria, Near Mog house.
Bastok - Port Bastok, between 2 doors to enter Mog House.
Windurst - Windurst Waters, on the right before you enter the Mog house.

# 16) NPCs seem to have low emnity. People have noticed weak vokes (not good), people have noticed that healers can use cure III along with their usual hitting the mob without taking hate (Excellent!), and I myself have noticed that as attacker style, she has to hit for 10-20 more than me to get hate (normally we are about the same) as my lvl 15 job (which is good, i guess... if you need NPC to take hate just unlock and turn away for a hit).

# 17) You have to physically attack a mob for your NPC to attack it.

# 18) Your NPC will only gain exp off a mob that it attacks (no, aoe attacks that you do which kill 50 mobs do not stack onto your NPCs exp ;.;)

# 19) A guy in my LS has his NPC dual-wielding, so it is possible. He said that he THINKS that the weapons that he traded (both at the same time) were Saparas (lvl 7 scimtar), but he says that he was very tired and drunk at the time... If trading these 2 together doesn't get your NPC dual weilding, try drinking until 3 a.m. and then trade something and see if that works, lol. If indeed saparas DO dual weild, then it is possible that other weapon types which are not the ones listed for single-wield will also work when traded in pairs. Let me know how you get on (i'm sticking to GKT and GSD for now).

# 20) You CANNOT trade HQ weapons. So far there are only the 2 weapons of each class which are listed above that can be traded.

# 21) You do not get your traded weapons back when you trade a new one ;.; .

# 22) It is not a typo on my, or anyone elses, part that some of the "upgrades" are actually worse than the original weapon you traded. There is speculation that the weapon that you give is for training only and the NPC then goes out and finds herself a weapon of that class of her own level, but to be safe, i'm sticking to Uchigatana --> 2-Hand Sword.

#23) If you and your NPC fight mobs that you get exp from, you will lose 30% of the exp that you would get from being solo (same as if you were in a pt with another player). e.g. on an EM mob, you will get 70 exp instead of 100.

# 24) You have to wait until JP midnight has passed before you can get a new pearl. If timed right, you can call your NPC at 11pm jp time, fight for half an hour - 45 mins, go back, drop and then get a new pearl (before midnight JP time), fight for however long it takes, then drop your pearl and get a third one (it will now be after midnight JP time). You will now have to wait 20 hours from your timer for the next call, and then a further 3-4 hours until JP midnight again. *** NOTE SINCE THE LAST UPDATE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR NPC LESSENS WHEN YOU DROP YOUR PEARL AND GET A NEW ONE***

# 25) Your NPC DOES NOT appear to lose exp when it dies. As of yet, noone has reported their NPC de-levelling, either and I'm pretty sure that it isn't possible.

# 26) Your NPC will stay with you for 15 fights, or until you send it away, zone, die or get it killed. Possibly a 45 min time limit as well, but I'll confirm this. After a while, your NPC will stay with you for 20 fights or 55 mins, but this is knocked back down to 15/45 if you drop your pearl.

# 27) NPC doesn't aggro sight/sound mobs (haven't tried magic-aggro ones).

# 28) Once you are able to upgrade your weapon, you may upgrade to ANY of the rank 2 weapons without having to first give the rank 1 weapon of it's class.

# 29) The shield upgrade is a shell shield.

# 30) If you want to change your NPC altogether and start again, choose "End this task" option when you speak to Luto. You can now restart the quest and choose a different NPC.

# 31) As a healer, your NPC will have all the spells for it's level (exept erase, possibly. But then I don't know if that is a party member only spell, like regen?).

# Tip) When choosing a weapon for your NPC, take into consideration that there's no way to control which weapon skill your NPC will use (that we know of so far, anyways). Yes, it would be nice to have an NPC with a greataxe using Sturmwind all the time, but chances seem pretty even that you'll get one of the lousy break WSes instead just as often. Along the same lines, if you decide to go hand-to-hand, don't forget that the reason these weapons are so effective on MNKs is the Martial Arts trait (reduces innate delay), which the NPCs seem to not have.

# TIP) If you want your NPC to dish out the most damage in a fight, without being too bothered about whethere or not you can sc with them, I would recommend Uchigatana (Great Katana) or maybe Claymore (Great sword) as your first weapon... then upgrade to 2-handed sword (Great Sword) regardless of which you chose the first time around (as the "Upgrade from GKTN is a lower level than the Uchi for some reason... ?!?!).

This information has been compiled through my own experience, and also through reading the useful information posted by others in the other threads. Many thanks to those of you who have posted, and I hope that this thread saves people time^^

As more and more information becomes available, I will edit this post, so that the info is always at the top. If someone can sticky this, it would be appreciated, as ppl probably won't post on it much - just look at it. If anyone knows of any USEFUL tips, or an answer to any other FAQ that should be in my list, post it here and I will add it to my post for all to read easily.

# 7) You cannot use your Pearl to call your NPC in any area that you could not ride a chocobo i.e. only in "outside" areas, not in dungeons, towns or "arenas".

hmm... maybe word it different. You can certainly summon your NPC in Xarcabard (and probably Terrigan/Valley of Sorrows), even though there is no way to get a chocobo there. A better wording may be "You cannot summon your NPC in any zone that a BLM can use Escape."

Also, you cannot summon the NPC in areas unlocked via missions ie. the zones around Tavnazia Safehold and Ru'aun Gardens. I have been pestering Radille to try to get in some Promyvion parties but she just keeps telling me her weapon skill is ready. o.O;

Great that you are doing this.

It may be helpful to others if they knew how long it would take to get the added benefits, like upgrades on weapons.

Also the headgear does come into play, and I don't remember reading that in your post.

BTW what level is your NPC?

Though you can call your NPC in most zones a blm can't escape from, you cannot summon them in Lufaise Meadows and Misereaux Coast ;_;

My NPC is still @30. The first 6 times I called her, I just sent her away again, as I was just trying to get the weapon. After that I have only called while I have been lvl 14 BST, so she's not gaining any exp yet, but I'm not that fussed about it yet. I want to have her using the 2-hand sword before I really want to take her out to kill stuff^^

P.S. All suggestions so far added. :-)

unfortunately, due to this being a thread for people to read and not particularly add to, it keeps dropping down the list, so feel free to say hi when you read it to keep it towards the top. Saves me having to occasionally spam a post...

I got the headgear option today, and my NPC is an attacker, not a healer. Unsure how many summons it took, but my NPC is level 37 now. For those interested in pure damage, a Great Axe is also a very nice option.

Umm..Can't call in anyplace a blm can use escape? I thought SE said anyplace where there is either no fighting (like in town) or where an NPC already exists (escort quests, and dangruf wdai with that idiot ken)?

Clarify please? (I can't seem to find the link to the anouncement to re-read atm, and playonline.com loads to slow >< )

Couple of questions:

Does anybody know if HQ weapons could be traded for use by the NPC?

According to the post, she will accept a level 12 great katana (uchigatana) before a level eight great katana? (tachi)

And lastly, do you get the weapons back?
#13 Jul 31 2005 at 12:32 AM Rating: Good
Can anyone explain to me why the second "upgrade" for a one-handed sword is actually worse than the first upgrade?

Is that a typo, or are you actually handing your NPC a bad weapon?

Whats up with the Armor change, it almost seems like it doesnt matter what they are wearing, today my NPC is in her race starting gear, but she still withstood the monsters attacks just as good.

Quote:
-The NPC may not be called during NPC escort quests, but may be used along with beastmasters’ pets, summoners’ avatars, and dragoons’ wyverns.
-The NPC may only be called in certain field areas.

In FFXI zones are categorized in three ways:

1 - "Outdoor" zones. Chocobos can usually (not always) go in these areas, and Escape does not work in them. (SE calls them "field areas" but Alla calls them Outdoor and I like that word better)
2 - "Dungeon" zones. Chocobos cannot enter these areas, and casting Escape will move you to the entrance of that zone.
3 - "Town" zones. Towns are non-combat areas that chocobos cannot enter and Escape does not work.
(I don't know if Escape works in BCNM's, but BCNM arenas would fall under rule 1 or 2 regardless)

NPC's may only be summoned in Outdoor zones. The sub-rule to this is that NPC's may not be summoned in Outdoor zones that require missions to unlock. Your NPC does not have Zilart missions done and has no Promyvions.

I can't explain it any clearer ; ;

Thats ok, clear enough. It was the definition of no.2 that was getting me, dangruf feels like an outdoor area even if the choco won't go there, I had previously thought it was because of that n00b NPC named ken - I figured escort quest area = no NPC helper, thought they must occupy same data space or something.

actually it is linked to on their front page. http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/ itself takes forever and a day to load up on my crappy connection.

Armorparts CAN upgrade when you do a good job (i.e. kill mobs) or CAN downgrad when you do a bad job (i.e. get killed, get your NPC killed, dismiss him/her).
So different armor just indicates how successfull you were fighting in the last few callings of your NPC.

Good job, I know the most of it gathered from experience and the good folks who post here.

Low emnity is good and I think you are right but when I make Pimy my npc a healer and skill up with her as DRG29 and below I have done it she get hate from some types of monsters like Wight, Giga and some times Pugil.

It's because she is using a Greath Katana and use dia, paralyze and etc. I sub WHM when I solo and that really gimp me so in some cases if I don't miss 2-3 hits she will get hate and I have troubles to get it back without Provoke.

I cast Cure II on her to keep her alive but it's annoying that the npc can get hate from me as DRG since I do great damage LOL. Oh well she is level 32 and I 29 so it' ok.

Don't fight tough, even prey or decent Wight's as DRG they go after low HP and want to kill your wyvern :/

Rilly, could you post more info on your headgear? Does it still appear to be an option of on or off? or do you get a choice of 2 different pieces with attacker?

I have a question -
If your NPC dies does it lose exp?

If so, mine is probably levelling down soon. Im a lvl 33 WHM and Ive been taking it the Champaign to get it experience but I always end up aggrod and have to run and zone it (which usually ends up with it dying b4 the zone).

You may want to consider levelling in easier places then. Getting your NPC killed isn't really the way to advance it.
