Summary

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 and A Boy's Dream - PLD AF2 to begin this quest.

Start out by heading to Chateau d'Oraguille and go to Prince Trion's chambers.

After the cutscene, you need to head to M-7 in Southern San d'Oria and talk to Vemalpeau, who lives in a small house. Then, head to the Lion Spring's Tavern and talk to Najjar. Next, head to Count Caffaule's Manor at C-6 and talk to Ullassa. Ullassa will tell you about an item called Mique's Paintbrush.

Go to Castle Zvahl Baileys and obtain a Zvahl Coffer Key. The following monsters drop coffer keys: Ahriman, Doom Demon, Arch Demon, Blood Demon and Abyssal Demon.

Next, find a coffer. All eight spawn points where coffers can appear are located on the third map. The spawn points are at J-10, F-10, F-6, J-6, G-8 and H-8. Trade your key to the coffer to receive the the Mique's Paintbrush.

Next, head back to Southern San d'Oria and talk to Vemalpeau again. He will tell you that all of his son's belongings are still in his room upstairs. Head upstairs and investigate the painting on the wall. You will get an option to look at a strange letter, so do so.

Once you have the letter, head to the weapon shop at K-7 and talk to Exoroche. He will tell you that you need to dip the letter on a well in Davoi to have the ink appear. At this point you are now ready to head to Davoi.

Once in Davoi, make your way to the village well at G-9. Clear all of the orcs from around the well, saving TP. Click on the well to spawn two NM orcs, One-Eyed Gwajboj and Three-Eyed Prozpuz. When you kill them, an item called a Well Weight will drop. Trade the item to the well for a cutscene.

Return to Northern San d'Oria and speak with Ailbeche. He talks about a lake in Jugner Forest. Now go to Jugner Forest and head to the Maiden's Spring which is located in E-6 of the map. Once you approach the well, you will get a really cool cutscene in which most of the storyline from the quests will wrap up.

After the cutscene, head back to San d'Oria and go to Prince Trion's Chamber in Chateau d'Oraguille to get your Gallant Surcoat.

NM take down
# Sep 12 2014 at 12:16 PM Rating: Decent
Just did this as my 99Thf/Dnc with my Alter Egos Kupipi, Ayame and Curilla. Popped the NMS killed then Rng with no problem then went to the Pld and took it down no prob, he 2 hour which kept him a live a bit longer, but it did not matter. Now head to get my surcoat. Good Luck all!!
Battle Info as of 11/09/10
# Nov 09 2010 at 5:57 AM Rating: Decent
I just got my Pld to 60 and after a horrible time in Castle Zvahl Baileys, I decided that I would try doing this part of the quest on my own. When I saw the info given on ZAM, I figured the fight would be a piece of cake. I unfortunately didn't check the date of the postings. The information is dated and pretty much entirely wrong. I'm putting this up in hopes that someone considering soloing this fight or the such has a better idea of what they're getting into.

The RNG has approx 10,000 HP.

Now as for my experience, I went as 85WAR/SAM41 along with a level 70 Soothing Healer Npc. Based on the info from ZAM I figured I could just take out the RNG real quick and work away slowly at the PLD. I used Retaliation, Restraint, and Mighty Strikes off the bat, didn't remember Warcry. With full Tp from clearing out the zone beforehand, I let loose with Sekkanoki and a Raging Rush SC that totalled about 2400 DMG. This is about the point I realized ZAM had screwed me over and things were going to be more interesting than planned. I used meditate and let loose with another WS shortly after, continuing to cut away at its health. With Seigan and Third Eye I was able to dodge some of the hits coming my way, but together and on top of you, these mobs take down any shields pretty quick. When they do connect, both NMS hit me for on average 80-120 DMG. My Npc kept me alive for the better part of this fight, spamming Cures, I know I saw at least 2 Cure V's in there. One-Eyed Gwajboj (PLD) used Cure IV twice to heal Three-Eyed Prozpuz while i fought him, gave him back 740 hp. In the end was about 10,000 DMG dealt. On a positive note, if you kill him fast enough he won't get to use Eagle Eye Shot, at least he didn’t in my case.

The PLD NM has apprx. 11,500 HP.

When I started fighting One-Eyed Gwajboj, I had about half my hp left and my npc was just about out of mp, I battled OeG to about 75% when things were looking grim, with about 300 hp left I disengaged him and disbanded with my npc. I managed to respawn my npc with 120 hp left, I quickly threw up third-eye, and luckily bought myself enough time for a cure V. After this point it was a cospletely different fight. On his own OeG misses many more of his attacks, and third-eye was much more effective. My npc got me back up to full health and I stayed in the green for the remainder of the fight. Used Invincible around 40% remaining for me. In the end, was about 11,500 DMG that was needed, he starts to spam Cure IV at low HP.

Lucky fight, but I managed to pull it off, and got my gallant surcoat.

Hope this helps. good luck!
Spawn them with sneak on!
# Mar 15 2010 at 1:28 PM Rating: Decent
Just did this fight! Wanted to make sure anyone trying to do this one knows that you can spawn the two NMs with sneak up and neither of them will attack you. I went as 73 Drg/Sam with 75 Smn/Whm to help and 55 Blm/Whm for backup cures. Cleared the area of orcs, popped a silent oil, and spawned the NMs. Smn pulled back One-Eyed with Garuda, and I proceeded to seigan tank him for most of the fight. This guy has a lot of HP, but the fight wasn't bad. He didn't manage to hit me much, but when he did, he did about 100 damage per hit. I spammed Penta Thrust, and the Smn used Garuda and Carby. The fight was over pretty quickly. Now I have my shiny, new Gallant Surcoat! :D Yay! If any of my fellow Paladins need help with any part of this quest and are on Asura, feel free to send a /t to Gwendolyn! Good luck!

I found it relatively easy. Took me five hours to get coffer and key. Arhiman's all the way.Hunted down a few NM's in there as well. Besieged, recalled all of my LS buddies that could and wanted to stay to help. 75THF/37WAR and a 74PLD/37WAR. Cleared the area, popped them. PLD vs. PLD and THF vs. RNG. I killed the orc's that we missed. Called in my NPC, 74PLD called in his. Me and the THF finished the RNG off, then moved to help the PLD. ((Vorp Blade is lovely)) Got the weight, traded it, got the CS, ran to N. Sandy, Jugner, then back to Sandy. ((I'm just glad Sandy had control of Jugner!)) Talked to Trion. Gallant Surcoat Obtained!

59WHM/29BLM: Blackraine
60RDM/30DRK: Haplo
75THF/37WAR: Vadian

...They helped me grab coffer, NM's, and a coffer key. Fer and Vad helped with the NM's. Much love, DDOOD. <3

LONG Fight solo...
# Dec 16 2008 at 4:24 PM Rating: Decent
just attempted to solo this as thf75/nin with only acid bolts during the Xbow extra delay glitch I did the zone to caves trick to lose the rng...got the pld to about 20% when the CURE IV's were outdoing my dmg sometimes (im wasnt exactly geared XD) but another thf was farming so i invited him and we took it out pretty quick the only thing that was takeing out my shadows was his flash and Banish II spams realy
so ya easily soloable by a thf75 if u have the tools (i used 2 stacks) and bloody bolts would def help
My Experience

I just finished this quest finally after putting it on the backburner for so long, and just wanted to share my experience.

You only have to have pld as your main when you first talk to Trion to flag the quest. After that you can be any job you want.

The rest just follow the guide and hope theres not too many ppl farming in castle Zvhal bailey and poping coffers regularly.

Now, when i went to do the nm fight in Davoi i went as 75 nin/war. I popped the nms on the well and had my nin af boots on at night (+25% movement speed) Evasion gear and defender up.
I hauled *** to the monastic cavern zone training all the orcs on the way. When I came back out i only saw 1 nm and figured it was the pld, not knowing which was the pld, 1 eye or 3 eyes.

I voked, and started fighting, then realizing i had the rng when he pulled out his bow. Got hit once hit pretty hard actually 230 something with zerk up.
Killed him, rested. looked at my chat log saw that the pld kept stopping to buff himself so when i zoned the rng was in between me and the pld.

So i popped again ran to the zone, waited till all the mobs i was training caught up to me, zoned. Came back out, rng was still in between. Ran past him to grab pld and had to zone in and out 2 more times before i could get the pld alone and away from the rng.

After that wasnt difficult at all, just a bit of a long fight.
nin paralyze wore pretty quick, but slow and blind stuck well.
He uses invincible at about 50%. And spams cure 4 down under 20%.

I have it flagged under quests ... the first NPC have been talked to. Has anyone else ran into this problem?

Ok, so I did all my AF except for the {Beadeaux} coffer. The Hands were the hardest, taking 9 hours just to find the key. This key took 5 kills, coffer took a long time thanks to 3 others looking for it. I would say The Eldieme is hardest for me.

EDIT
Ok, so just did this one, PLD55 (me) and a 75 smn, we died twice and the third time One Eyed was still there so we just grabbed him and pulled him away from links. Easies way is to have sneak up when you pop them, the Pld NM(the one you need) automatically attacks and the ranger (worthless one put there just to cause pain) won't link. Then either pull One-eyed East or all the way into water. We did it the third time with me killing all links and smn using Garuda on one-eyed. All in all, really tough, harder then the AF hands for me...

I tried to solo this just about 10 min ago. sam/pld(weird combo i know). tried to do the sneak pop version but messed it up, so i ran to river delinked the other nm and flashed the pld over to me. the fight wasnt so bad but i wasnt hitting hard enough to make the kill... i say i got him to around 10% or so before he killed me, so im gonna try back with npc and food.

Duoed by me (WHM75/NIN37) and a PLD58/RDM25 who needed it. We cleared everything to the north before popping the NM's. I flashed One-Eyed when it popped, and both of us ran north to the river. Both NM's deaggroed, and I was able to repull it cleanly to the North and West along the river. We fought it there. It was quite difficult, the PLD flashing while I was recasting Stoneskin helped out alot. Finished the fight with about 100MP.

Solod tonight as BST/NIN ate a sis kabob and had 3 beast affinity merits if that mattered (no relic).

Cleared area of links, planned to try popping using the BST AF3 method, didn't know if would work (cast Tonko: Ichi and click ??? just befor it finishes casting). Ended up with rng facing north and pld facing south, rng agrod me, sent carrie at him then sent at pld and ran for zone and heeled, used tp from clearing area to rampage one of the ranger orcs by the zone befor carrie died and I zoned (forgot to clear these first, wasn't expecting to zone nm.) Used call beast and sent at pld, other mnk orc at zone linked, spent a minute killing that befor helping carrie with the nm, carrie was about 20% hp, nm at maybe 70% with about 2:00 minutes left on call beast timer and I heeled and rampaged to take hate and tanked for a good 30 seconds befor having to snarl and get utsusemi back up. Carrie dies with 50 seconds on call beast, I blink tank til it is back up, got hit 3 times (102/114/178) then call beast and snarl.

Second carrie seemed to be higher level, was hitting pld for 100-130 damage a pop and was only taking 40-70 damage (first carrie was doing 80-100 and was taking about the same damage). He started the cure 4 spam at the end, but we just whittled him down to death, 34 xp 80 gil and a well weight, total fight took just under 8 minutes from zoning.
Another goal accomplished...

Did this last night with 3 friends, thanks go out to:

Gredoric: 71SMN
Schizm: 75MNK
Athela: 70DRG

First run, I popped the mobs prematurely and we wiped, 2nd run we cleared the area, Gred and Carby kited the RNG while we 3 hammered on the PLD (I was 59PLD), then we all took out the RNG. It was a very easy when done properly and with competent people.

Thanks again guys^^

Off to get my Surcoat XD

AI changes

Thought I would put this up for anyone who had completed in the past. SE changed RNG mob AI. Ive solo'd this 3 times in the past with ease, simply move out of melee range of the rng, and he will slowly take potshots. Very easy to maintain shadows using this method. Now though... the rng mobs will charge you. This makes it next to impossible for 1 char to keep shadows up.

Me and my buddy did his for his PLD and we used 75 PLD/RDM (myself) and 75 RDM/BLM the only problem we had was basically the PLD curing the other mob and the RNG was taking off stoneskin pretty quick. He decided to use chain-spell convert and just aspired and drained all of his HP back.

Very fun fight.

Very epic.

Just got mine today. Spent like 45 min on Castle Zvahl Baileys for getting key and opening coffer (I went with war75/nin37, he killed mobs while I was healing him and resting with Dark Staff). It was painless.

For the Davoi part, I spent like 30 min in Aht Urghan shouting for help, and got a sam75, rdm64, rdm75, smn75 (which also needed to do Davoi part), pld72, pld60, pld60 (me). Killed both NMs very easily at the same time, sam75 and rdm64 doing the pld and rest of the group focused on the rng.

I found much more difficult Eldieme and Garlaige coffer, cause no so much people want to help with those...but I guess it's just luck

really?! A level 75 RDM/NIN soloed it! and they suck at solo, so this must be real easy!

seriously, it is not helpful in the slightest to tell us that you did it with 13 level 75's. Not everyone has a bunch of 75 friends to do this for them.

Anyway, the key mobs are REALLY easy to take down. Especially the BLM demon (Doom Demon) I believe as long as you keep them silenced and otherwise enfeebled.

A Level 59 BLM/WHM, a level 61 PLD/WAR and a level 63 DRK/THF with a level 56 healer NPC will easily take down these mobs. JUst watch out for Ancient MAgic from the Ahriman.

Hi There,

I'd like to say that I don't know HOW some of you found this fight so hard....Last night me (Lev 58 PLD) and my level 75 RDM/NIN friend did it...so basically he did it solo, without too much of a problem. Mind you he has Excalibur, AF2, and Abjurations...

We found the coffer key on like the third kill...and the coffer was like right in front of us...spent 20 mins there.

This is how he managed to do it quite easily....First we cleared the area of mobs...We killed the ranger first because he'll go down easier....Allthough the Paladin will heal the ranger..What my RDM friend did was just keep binding the paladin, cause he can only attack up close, and we'd just back up a few steps and keep killing the ranger. Every time the paladin came unbound, he'd simply bind him again and step back a few...This is all you can really do to help out when a high lvl is doing it for you....Flash whichever one is attacking your friend constantly....itll keep him from taking a lot of dmg. Also, I saved up my TP for spirits within, and got it off twice or three times...As at this level as a paladin the only way you can really DMG these guys is with Spirits. Also, you can heal whoever is helping you of course, besides this your not gonna do much damage. Without having really good gear, might end up having some problems doing enough DMG to the ranger (solo) to outdmg the paladin's heals...But as I said my friend has Excalibur so it wasn't much of a problem. Anyways, now I just need to get 60 so I can wear the coat :P

Just did this with 3 buddies of mine, and it was a slight bit challenging.

75thf/nin
75thf/nin
70rng/thf
75blm/whm

Fight took about 10 mins...cleared pops around the area and went right into fight. Was fairly easy, but i dont believe either of those NM's can be slept, we tried and blm almost kicked the bucket.

All in all it was fairly easy.

All of this quest was done with my 75thf. Coffer, etc.

For those attempting to get the Zvahl Castle Bailey Coffer Key, you will need to see if the place is cluttered with RMTs farming demon horns, ariman wings, and the NMs dropping drk scrolls like absorb-dex. Normally, they have a systematic pattern where, depending on the number of people they have, will split off to the four holes and decimate everything, meeting at the very basement where they will start all over again. Each team are all lvl 75s, including a thf to pop the coffers and this happens across all servers (check ffxi AH on demon horns). The only thing they don't touch are the arihmans at the center, which makes this place extroadinarily hard to get a coffer key or finding a coffer for that matter. These guys are usually at the castle in between 24 hour NM pops on prime time, so nights or early morning is best time to get the coffer.

I have a great idea: Why don't you cry about it some more?
Maybe some people don't know their way around Zvahl. I can find Throne Room no problem, but I'd never had to hunt coffers. I think this is a spectacularly well done walkthrough.

# May 20 2007 at 2:24 PM Rating: Decent
Just did this with the following party:
Summoner 75
Ninja 75
Black Mage 75
Paladin 60(me)

I went Paladin, even though I could have used a level 75 job.
Anyway, no problem at all. The area around the well was full with aggroing Decent Challenge, but we took them down fast. There were also 2 elementals which we killed. When everything was death, we still had near full HP and MP, so I just popped them, both aggroed me (they were facing the direction I stood, when I popped them), the summoner send Carbuncle on the Ranger, Black Mage Ninja and I killed the PLD Orc, without any big MP or HP loss. It did take a while, because of the amount of HP. The Ninja had no problem at all, the Black Mage used Freeze 2 and some other spells, but Ninja kept hate. The summoner's avatar got link of 2 orc pops when the Paladin Orc was almost death. No problem at all, Carbuncle tanked 3 Orc's for a bit, then the Ninja started tanking the PLD NM, and I attacked it as well. It went down quickly, although halfway the Ninja went down to 550 HP once when losing Shadows. I used Cure 4, the Summoner used Cure 3, no problem. Right after it, it was death. The 2 links were also (or nearly) down when the Ranger was death. All that I, as Paladin 60, did was help out by using Flash, and Cure 4 once. Traded the item I got from the Paladin Orc, got a tiny cutscene, while the rest waited for the cutscene to finish, killing any orc pops nearby. I would say, we did it like any group of experienced players would. No problem at all.

Ok, I've duo'd the final orc battle with a 68whm/blm friend and me as 75war/nin, two times now, once for his pld, and again a few days ago for mine. The first time we cleared enough of the area not to get too many links and prepared to pop and run for monastic cavern. Instead what happened is they both popped, the PLD casts protect 4 on the RNG immediately, I voke the PLD, and he comes after me, having just cast a spell so he doesn't stall to cast on me. The RNG didn't link, and I just wailed away on the PLD right there (pulled back a bit of course) with my friend healing me. The RNG of course eventually despawned.
Second time, for mine, we tried this again and it worked out the exact same way. Both times admittedly a few of the nq orcs respawned and linked, which was to be expected since there WERE only two of us and we could only clear the area so fast, but my friend was able to keep them slept while I kept side voking the adds and using rampage for hate keeping on the PLD. I had little trouble keeping utsu up, and the whm rarely had to do more than throw regen and haste on me. Then, both times, we just cleaned up the adds and the appropriate one of us went to trade the well-weight.
Long story short, it can be duo'd by a healer and a tank, and if you do it right you don't even need to worry about the RNG, as I assume either the same basic awareness rules apply to him and he won't link or aggro for 5 seconds after pop, or the two of them pop not quite facing each other and are thereby unable to link.

Hope this helps save any frustration with trying to run to zone.
