Time it takes to form a party
# May 06 2005 at 10:38 AM Rating: Decent
I have seen several posts regarding how long it has taken to form the party that does this quest. It took me only 20 minutes to form the party I was in. Good advertising is the key! Make sure you mention in your shouts that everyone that does this quest receives 500 gil, and you'll have a party in two shakes of a Ornery Sheep's tail.

When the party is complete, make sure to find out if everyone has accepted the quest. Guide those that need it over to Bastok Metalworks and have them speak to Izabele. I found out two people had not accepted the quest, so I saved myself 1000 gil in false advertising compensation (I also received some comical "Now you tell me" comments).

Make the highest party member stay in the back to handle any aggro issues. One party member did aggro a Quadav, and I was able to call the team to a halt and ask for help. It was probably the highest level Young Quadav because I was forced into using my Monk 2-hour, Hundred Fists, to make sure the fight ended well (MNK 4 / WAR 2 dropped to 15/94 HP cause I held hate and everyone else was a level 1 character).

After that, I spotted two high level characters running by, asked for their help ensuring a clear path, and the rest was easy gil.

NOTE: To new players, DO NOT FOLLOW THE PATH! FOLLOW THE LEADER! Our group did very well to follow the leader, and we had a good little 10 minute quest because of it. To veteran players, let a newbie lead the party. I was excited at teaching a noob about being a good party leader.

Evey member gets 500 gill..otherwise there would be no incentive for peeps to do this quest now would there ^^

Make sure you tell you're team mebers not to engage in any battles untill you done it..although you will more than likely run into at least one Quadav along the way.
No lvl 5 or under job

Anyone know if this quest can be done at all if all your jobs are lvled way past 5? (adv jobs as well). Prob just skip it , but i like having all quests completed.
My story

I will definately concur that this quest can be a challenge. It took me quite a while to get enough people level 5 and below. The worst part is that people kept leaving the party before we started because it was taking so long.

One person did not have the quest, so we had to make a trip to the metalworks, and after that we were off!

Even though i organzed the party, another member knew where the NPC was. So we followed him. As most people have mentioned, we had a diverse group in terms of level, so we just skipped the monsters and made a beeline.

Unfortunately, I wasn't paying attention, and 2/3rds of the way there, I ran straight into a Shrapnel! killed me in 3 hits before I knew what was going on. I guess that is a rare night-only spawn for that area... needless to say, my party had to wait while I ran all the way back.

All told, the experience took quite a while, and I'm sure some of the party members were annoyed at the whole thing.

However, I had a good time. It was the first time I recruited people for a party, and the first real party experience I had. I think thats the value of this one....
Question
# Apr 01 2004 at 10:58 PM Rating: Decent
Looking at this quest, do you need all 6 party members to talk to Izabele to complete this? Or can you just exploit 5 people into joining you so you can get the title and the reward. It'd be crazy if 1 person didn't talk to Izabele and everyone else fails

The answer is: Each person that wants to be rewarded needs to talk to Izabele at the start, and Hunting Bear at the end. As long as you have a full group of Lv. 5 or lower players, whether they have the mission flagged or not, the ones that ARE flagged for the mission can get the reward.

#REDACTED, Posted: Feb 05 2004 at 4:27 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You know, I hate to go off on this, and I know this a fairly new game and all but....it seems that there is an over abundance of people who do not care to listen to simple instructions on FFXI. In fact, I went back to playing EQ for well over a month now just because of that fact. It just takes away from gameplay when you have a bunch of people who wont listen to simple instructions......for example, a group with 4 wars, and you say, everyone provoke at different times so the wars take equal amounts of dmg....but no, they all provoke at the same time, the WHM dies, and then so does everyone else. I am going to start playing again on a different server cause a friend is, hopefully since I've played last, people have wizend up a bit........

I just wanted to fill in any blanks related to this quest. It's actually not as long or troublesome as the people here are saying. The shortest route to the NPC is out the market to south gust, left to the fumaroles, up to north gust, and the NPC is along the river by the waterfall. Hostile NPC's are quadavs and goblins at the fumaroles and near the river. You need to all be huddled around the NPC for it to work.

If you have a subjob, it's ok. I did this as a 3/1 war/mnk with no problems. EXP gain here will be awful if you have a scattered level group, so don't bother trying to hunt. Just get to the NPC. Having a higher level to clear a path is always helpful as well.

The NPC, Hunting Bear, is at F-8 on the close side of the river, just under the waterfall.

don't forget you have to go through SGust
Attempt at busy times

Nice post Nekojin Scholar.

I just want to recommend that you attempt this Quest during a busy time of day for your server. I tried to herd together a party at 5 AM Eastern US time more than once and couldnt do it. You need lots of people online because its tough to find people who are willing to do the quest. I'd say I spent around 2-3 hours doing this quest, but its cool when you finally complete it.

OK, here's some concrete information about how this quest works. My girlfriend and I refer to this quest as, "Herding Cats," because it's very difficult to get an entire group to get this done in a reasonable amount of time.

First: You need 6 people of level 5 or below, whether they've received the quest or not. Each person in the party has to talk to the end person (Running Bear?) to receive the reward; it doesn't matter if you're the leader or not. If anyone is over level 5, the quest will fail.

If you haven't received the quest from Izabele, this will be a wasted trip for you. You'll be helping the others finish the quest, but you can't finish it if you haven't started it.

If you have someone drop out of the party, you're screwed. You need to go back to Bastok to get another person - which probably means another trip to the Metalworks.

In order to reach the target point, you have to go into SOUTH Gustaberg, and make your way West to the west-most passtage to North Gustaberg. It's not too hard to avoid the few monsters in North Gustaberg who are aggressive, and a full group of levels 4-5 can kill them without too much difficulty.

Ideally, this quest should take 10-15 minutes, tops. When I did it, it took over an hour, because many people simply do not follow directions. When we left Bastok, we had two full groups (I realize in hindsight that allowing the second group to rely on me was a mistake). Before we got even halfway to the North Gustaberg zone line, we lost a player from our main group, and the second group failed to follow me, and got lost. Since I was the only person in the group who knew where the end of the quest was, everyone's eyes were on me, and they SHOULD have been Autofollowing on me. My girlfriend's trip was worse: it took her group over 90 minutes, and they never did complete the quest, because someone left the group just before they got there.

A few tips, if you should happen to start this quest: First, switch to one of your unused classes. If you die, it costs you nothing. If you survive through the quest, you can suicide on a monster to get back home instead of running back. Second, if you're not the Leader, just Autofollow the leader, and let him get you there.

All in all, this quest isn't very rewarding. If you can get together a disciplined group of players, it might be worth your time... but I'm certain that you'll agree that, "Herding Cats," is an appropriate nickname for it.

A few corrections (since it won't let me directly edit the post): If anyone in the group is over level 5, the quest will fail for everyone.

And yes, you can switch to one of your lower-leveled jobs to run this quest - in fact, I recommend it.

Do you absolutely need to be in a full group to complete this quest? I want to get it done, but it's tough to find a full group willing to travel that distance at that level.
confused

do all your party members get 500 or is it only the head leader of the party that does and does everyone who is in the group complete the quest once they talk to the bridge guy or is it again only the party leader that it is counted for?
yes

Make sure all six members have initiated the quest. I know from experience that any party members that don't initiate the quest will not be able to get the 500 Gil
Payment
# Nov 06 2003 at 11:13 PM Rating: Default
Does each member get 500 or is it split?
If so, can each member of the party get the quest, and then just have the party switch leaders, talk to the guy, switch leaders, talk to the guy....?
Great money maker
# Nov 04 2003 at 2:22 AM Rating: Decent
This is a good mission for low level peeps. Just gather a party of six that are level 5 or lower. As long as you stay away from Quadav's you'll be fine, it's just a long haul. And the guy is at the bottom of the waterfall. We went to the top and had to go a long way around to get back to the bottom.
