In-Game Text

Description

You receive this "quest" after completing Zilart Mission 4 or otherwise exposing yourself to the Rancor Flame (lighting an Unlit Lantern for admission into Sacrificial Chamber). This may not be 100% correct, but seems to be one part of the requirement, there may be other aspects to the quest.

Once you have touched the Rancor Flame, talk to Jakoh Wahcondalo (Mithra chief in Kazham) will get you a message something like, "You’ve been touched by the Rancor Flame! Get out of my village!" and she won’t say anything else to you. If you talk to her sidekicks, they tell you to go the Den of Rancor/Temple of Uggalepih complex to be cleansed, then come back.

Go to the Temple of Uggalepih. Bring at least 3 friends, as each one of you will need an Unlit Lantern. Head to the main entrance of the Temple (J-11 of Yhoator Jungle) and head in. You will need Invisible only throughout the Temple. Everything is this temple aggroes, even the bees. If you have a considerable amount of Tonberry hate already built up, you might want to reset the hate through the "Everyone’s Grudge" quest in Norg. If you already know how to get to the Den of Rancor and get unlit lanterns, you can skip the next few paragraphs.

ACQUIRING YOUR UNLIT LANTERN

To get into the Sacrificial Chamber in the Den of Rancor you will need to obtain 4 unlit lanterns which will help open the gate. (or you could bring nice friends that kept their lanterns) The lanterns are dropped by Tonberry Maledictors. There are alot of spots to find them. From the main entrance of Temple of Uggalepih, head to J-7 and open the secret door, exit at K-3 to Yhoator Jungle. Go to another entrance at the right side of K-9 in Yhoator Jungle. Once in the temple, go to H-7. There should be 2-3 Tonberry Maledictors there.

Alternatively, Tonberry Jinxers in Yhoator Jungle and Tonberry Imprecators in Den of Rancor can drop them as well.

NOTE: Tonberry Lanterns and Unlit Lanterns are NOT the same thing. You want the Unlit Lantern (which is Rare/Ex), Tonberry Lanterns are used in crafting.

As a side note, do your friends a favor and hold on to your Unlit Lantern. You may need it more often than you think, and it’s much easier than finding a new one provided you have the storage space.

PAINTBRUSH OF SOULS & GETTING THROUGH TEMPLE OF UGGALEPIH

If nobody already has the key item “Paintbrush of Souls,” you will have to get one. Luckily, it’s not too difficult to acquire, and you only need one for your entire party. The entrance level is filled with three kinds of tonberries: Cutters, Slashers and Harriers. The Tonberry Cutters periodically drop Uggalepih Keys, which is what you need. These are NOT coffer or chest keys, just “Uggalepih Keys.” Once you acquire one, you’ll want to go to F-7 of the first map. To get there from the front door, take a right (don’t go through the gate) at the bottom of the first stairs, follow that hallway through a couple of rooms until you have to turn north or south. Head north and follow that path straight until you come into a room with painting frames. Incidentally, you can complete the “A Question of Taste” quest in this room if you have reached that point in the quest.

In the NW corner of this room (down a little hallway), there is a locked door which needs an Uggalepih key (which, incidentally, will use up the key). Once in, you’ll find a room with a locked box and three books. Examine all the books until one drops a key. Use this key on the locked box and you will acquire the key item “Paintbrush of Souls.” Do not leave the room without acquiring the Paintbrush or you will have to get another key and do it again. Again, only one person needs the paintbrush. It is a permanent key item, however, and you will need it every time you ever need to go through the door to the Den of Rancor. (In short, it’s not a bad thing to have).

The next step is to head out of the room with the paintbrush back the way you came and take the first left you come to (if you didn’t have to get a paintbrush, just take every right from the main entrance). You will zone back out to Yhoator Jungle. Take every left you can until you zone back into the Temple. Take a right and once you come to the corner, head south. There is a gate here that someone not Invisible will have to open. Be careful, as even the wasps aggro here. Head south as far as you can until you are forced to head west or east. Head east until you come to a door. To get through this door, you need to kill the Temple Guardian. Once the Temple Guardian is dead, the door will open automatically and stay open for a couple of minutes, so if you’re lucky the door might already be open.

Assuming the door it closed, you have to kill the Temple Guardian. It is a doll-type mob with a huge damaging Meltdown attack that will likely kill multiple people if it explodes. When you see it preparing Meltdown, Stun it – it’s not a quick attack and the BLM or DRK should easily be able to do so. The Temple Guardian is more susceptible to physical attack than magical. When the Temple Guardian dies, head through the door – it will remain open for several minutes so no extreme hurry. If you have to Raise someone do so, and rest on the other side of the door. Cast Invisible before you head through the door because the next room is full of Tonberries and a VERY tough doll type mob called the Manipulator which aggroes to magic and is dangerous to a party of level 65, especially considering the number of Tonberry links you will have.

Head north through the Manipulator room (w/Invis) and head through another door you will have to open without Invisible. Inside, clear the tonberries in this room, and have the person with the Paintbrush of Souls click on the picture frame on the east wall. Once you see the little “Down Arrow” which generally means “Press Enter”, stop. Give it about thirty seconds and then hit enter. Once you’ve done that, the door to the Den of Rancor should open. This may take a little bit of practice and a couple of tries the first time, as it’s counter-intuitive to anything else you’ve likely done in FFXI. Walk down the hallway, you will zone to the Den of Rancor. Note: Once you’ve got the Paintbrush of Souls, you will always have it and can use it over and over. Unlike the Uggalepih key, it’s not a one-use item.

DEN OF RANCOR & QUEST COMPLETION

First, a word about the Den: everything aggros (even to level 75s) and almost everything links. You will need Sneak & Invisible throughout. The Den of Rancor is a highly confusing maze and it's highly recommended to print out a map if you don’t have one. Getting a party separated with one person getting lost & getting aggro often leads to a dead party. Be forewarned. And be careful.

Once you are actually in the Den of Rancor, you want to go to the Altar of Rancor at D/E-2. You can easily get there by hugging the right wall from where you enter the Den. Once there, trade an Unlit Lantern to the Altar of Rancor and you will receive a Rancor Flame. You may have problems doing this as there are bombs here which aggro to sight and magic. You can either wait for them to turn their backs, or fight them (Barfira is an absolute must). There are bats in the hallway which aggro to sound, so to fight the bombs, you pretty much have to fight the bats as well. It’s tricky, but a skilled party should be able to do this.

Once you have your Rancor Flames, you want to visit the other Altar of Rancor at I/J-13. You will need to clear out the Mousses from this room. Once you have done that, you can start trading your Rancor Flames to the Altar of Rancor, one a time. You will get a message telling you that a lantern has been lit. After the fourth lantern is lit, a very large bomb NM called Rancor Torch will appear.

You will have to kill the Rancor Torch, which we killed easily with 4 level 74-75’s and no tank. It was hitting about as hard as a normal bomb, but had a lot more Hit Points. We kept Barfira up the whole time, but it never even tried to explode. (Not saying it doesn’t explode, we just didn’t see it). Once the bomb is dead, there is no cut scene or ??? to touch. Just head back to Kazham and talk to the Chieftainess for your reward.

Don't do what I did, for the love of god.

If you go to do this when a group is doing ZM4, DO THIS QUEST BATTLE LAST. I don't know why, but if you do the battle, then do ZM4 afterwards (that is, you get another rancor flame after you kill the NM), it won't let you finish this quest.

You HAVE to kill the mob, then talk to the chieftainess before you obtain another rancor flame.

I unfortunately wasted an hour and a few deaths (as well as that of friends) over this f*cking retarded detail.

If there are any BSTs out there planning on soloing this, just a heads up, you'll need both slimes in the rancor torch room, and probably something else too. I totally recommend duoing this, because otherwise it'll depend on your ability to charm slimes on the fly, and we all know that's about as dependable as FFXI customer service.

And now a story to support my advice =D

I used my lantern to light all 4 torches as it outlined above, and before I lit the last one, I charmed a slime and got ready for what I expected to be an easy fight at level 72. My slime was doing 3 times the the bomb's average at roughly 150 after he'd berserked, but it was still obvious that the slime was going to die first, so I moved the battle elsewhere, re-sneaked/invised and made my way back to the altar where the other slime is hanging out.

The first slime dies, and of course I mischarm on the other one, tame, use a nearby dire bat instead and move the couple back away from the altar as before.

The dire bat dies in record time, and I attempt to charm the slime again. Mischarm a second time, tame's not up, crap. Waiting on my charm timer and contemplating on how it always seems longer than 15 seconds when there's a big nasty bomb with a supremely unnecessary hitpoint surplus on my tail and after a few hours I'm able to charm again.

Once again I mischarm and now things are starting to look not so good, because he's caught up to me at this point, and my hp are dropping pretty darn fast. One last ditch effort to charm, which is probably just a formality, because even if I had succeeded I probably wouldn't have been able to lose aggro in time, and it wouldn't even give me that. Mischarm x4 and death.

The moral: never charm slimes on the fly. You will die every damn time.

EDIT: on try 2, I brought the rancor torch downstairs, and I used one slime, 2 scorpions, and a bat on him before he died. During this run, I confirmed a few things: he CAN self-destruct; when he does self-destruct, it hurts a lot; and most importantly, if his self-destruct kills you, you still get credit for having beaten him, and can complete the quest, which is the only thing that saved me from launching my monitor through the window.

Just solo'd as 75rdm/nin. Went back and forth lighting the lanterns, b4 the 4th lighting i killed the tonberry and bat in the hall, converted, and waited for the slimes to go near the back of the room so i could pop it. Pulled the NM to the hallway, and man does he have hella hp. Not only that, but when ss was down and he got hits in between shadows, was hitting me for 150+. I kept bio and poison on him, kept enfire haste ss phalanx up, and slowly whittled his hp away. Savage Blade was doing 250-500ish at 100% with his berserk up. Not a hard fight with a blink tank, only problem is the other mobs around...which would be no problem if u had at least one other person with u. He has so much hp, he was at about 30% when the tonberry repopped, and it's a nin. Luckily he didn't aggro me til right near the end. The NM did self destruct at about 5%, i had no barfire up cuz i wasn't really expecting it, but neverthelss, it only did 23 dmg through ss and phalanx.

I would recommend to any rdm soloing, to clear the mousses from the room and fight there instead of the hallway, because not only are they lower lvl than the tonberry that spawns in the hall, but the tonberry is a nin and if he gets utsu up, ur not gonna be able to sleep him til u get his shadows down.

I soloed this quest up to the NM fight as 74 THF, my friend Stahn (75 WHM) joined me for the Rancor Torch fight.

I ran back and forth between E2 and J13 with the Rancor Flame / Unlit Lantern 3x (was doing the quest alone). After I lit my lantern for the 4th time, I zoned into the Temple and fortunately nothing reset. Met up with Stahn, went back to J13, lit the torch the 4th time and the NM popped. Note - you're lighting the same torch with the lantern 4 times.

Tip: Where to fight Rancor Torch - if you don't feel like dealing with the Mousses in the room, kill the bat and tonberry in the nearby passageway. Sneak pull the Rancor Torch into the passage, and leave the Mousses alone.

After I hit it with my first Dancing Edge, Rancor Torch was hardly even scratched. As solo THF DD is a mob TP factory, I thought for sure I was doomed to Self-Destruct (sleep bolts wouldn't proc). But it only used Berserk about a dozen times, and nothing else. The fight was really easy, I took one hit the entire time, and only used Utsusemi: Ni. Rancor Torch dropped nothing, and there is no ???? - I thought I did something wrong. But I went and talked to Jakoh, and she congratulated me for finishing the quest with 11,000 gil. Doesn't cover the powders and oils, but well worth it for the title! And no prrrice is too high to please Jakoh...

Wow, cool.

Thanks for the description. The main thing that's kept me from doing this in the past (other than having noone to do it with) was never knowing how hard the Rancor Torch was. Sounds like navigating the Den itself is a lot more treacherous than the battle itself.

One note about NM Bombs. I have never seen NM Bombs or Dolls ever Self-Destruct (eg. Dark Spark, Ullikummi, Bomb Queen, Despot) I don't think they're "allowed" to. I guess it would be too easy if they just blew up and the battle was over. The only exception I can think of is the Unstable Cluster NM in Riverne B, but that's technically 3 bombs in one, so it can "self-destruct" at least 2 times.

I can confirm that the Rancor Torch NM is capable of self-destruct. It did so as we neared the end of the fight, flattening me. I was still able to complete the quest, however.

I haven't done this quest yet (it's hard finding people to run around an area like the Den of Rancor for "just a silly quest"), even though I've been interested in it for a while. A few comments based on what little I could gather about this quest from other sites :

- I believe in order to activate the quest, you need to light your lantern at one of the Altars, and then go back to Kazham. Whenever you "transfer" the flame to the standing lanterns (eg. to open the gate to the Sacrificial Chamber for ZM4), you lose the flame.

- There are at least 3 Altars in the Den. I was under the impression that you actually had to visit all of them, in some order, although this may be totally wrong. (The 3rd Altar is around L-12 of the second map, near where the spawn site for the Spiral Hell WSNM is.) If this is not the case, I'm very curious what the purpose of that 3rd Altar is (never thought to check to see if it was lit or unlit - maybe next time I help out with that battle, I'll poke my head in)

Eeep. As I was writing this, I just stumbled across this link. Just answered all my own questions. LOL.

i had done ZM4 a long time ago, and since then done many quests in kazham, butthis did not activate for me untill i had helped a group with ZM4 by lighting my lantern and not completing the ZM4 BC. (they had a full group but were 1 lantern short) NOT saying this is how you activate, just my observation.
