This guy is a very rare spawn. There are 7 PHS. Hits for between 80-120.

I am suspecting he is a rare that can spawn in place of any a_destroyed_gargoyle. I did find him in spot 1 and 3 so far on top of enterance to Slabs camp.

He had bag in hand but did not drop Nec 1.5 item. Both kills were no drop pants. LDoN era on Yelinak TLP... Got book on third kill.

spawned on top of the balcony, /way -93, 17, -316.

you can camp out at /way -90, -8, -316, in between the 2 gargoyles. can also kill 2 more from here if you have ranged attack or pet.

P -270.7708, -39.8165, -307.8728, 240, 0, 0, 3, Gargoyles

These spots all have potential spawn locations of the Old Gargoyle to my knowledge. Go to the /loc, and look up, they're all on the rooftops, there's at least two in each spot.

Happy hunting!

He does spawn on the roof, but it is at least no longer, just one spot. I got myself summoned up then killed all on the roof and he spawned on a spot that no one here has mentioned. Get summoned up, then kill everything on the rooves. I got him on the first respawn and he had the tome (Managed epic 1.5 and 2.0 in a day, while not playing much.).
Can spawn from any gargoyle on the castle and city walls.

As you can see from the image (link below) "an old gargoyle" can spawn from the gargoyles on the top of the "castle" that you pass on the way down to the city. I was clearing all gargoyles on the castle and city walls, but stopped before going further down past the broken metal gates that lead into the tunnel to the bottom. Likely any of these can be the PH, though perhaps just a subset. Best just to kill them all.

I cannot confirm but I think only one of the destroyed gargoyles is a PH for old gargoyle. I've spoken with several other necros and from what they can recall their old gargoyle spawns were all in the same exact spot, which is to the left and above the entrance to the Slab area in The Hole:

https://i.imgur.com/VDY5hG0.jpg

Also, the bag in hand is not a surefire sign he has tome, as I killed him once and was happily thinking I was getting Tome first try, only to have only the plate legs drop, so don't get your hopes up just because you see him with a hacky sack in-hand.

Currently spawning during LDoN on Coirnav.

I can confirm the 6 "a ruined gargoyle" PHs on the walls in that area spawn the "an ancient gargoyle". The 3 near the square fountain and 3 way high up on the castle walls.

I can also confirm that you are correct that the 7 "a destroyed gargoyle" PHs in that same area (4 on the city gate wall, 1 above The Slab, and 2 on small lower ledge) spawn the "an old gargoyle"

I haven't seen anyone else mention this but if you go south out of the city, up the ramp, and then take a right up the stairs you come to a courtyard with a square fountain with a sword in the stone at -8, -220. The building in front of this ( full of constructs) has 4 "a destroyed gargoyle" PHs high up on the roof (no way up there as far as I can tell) that the "an old gargoyle" will also spawn there. It popped there when helping a guildee get the Hunter achievement. So there are actually 11 PHs in total. Killing all 11 PHs greatly increased his spawn rate.

Happy hunting!
Possible in early TLP?
# May 02 2017 at 8:40 AM Rating: Decent
Anyone know if this guy spawns on the newer TLPs like ragefire, phinny, and lockjaw? I know plenty of mobs drop epic 1.5 pieces (i.e. ball of elemental clay) but I don't know if this guy was a mob in this zone before the revamp or if it was just added during the revamp.

Theoretically, if it was a pre-revamp mob that simply received a modified loot table during the revamp, it should still spawn and drop the tome on TLPs that havent undergone the zone revamp yet.

Any help?

Find the broken down sign post "The Good Night" and jump up on it, then onto the roofs.

Like everyone says just follow the tunnel from zone-in and keep right. eventually you will get to an area with lots of buildings. DPS the gargoyles on the roods to get summoned up. Kill them and its just a matter of keeping on the roofs in this area. Eventually he will spawn, I got him on top of the wall across the courtyard from The Slab. (sign out front). It seems he can spawn anywhere on the roofs in the area so keep them clear.

STOP THE PRESSES! He spawns on top of "THE SLAB". Cast and he will summon you up or you can send a pet and have him FD. Either way, don't just stand down below looking stupid for hours like I did. The loc's posted earlier are right. But look up, not lateral. Damn game :~)

When you head down from zone in (Paineel), you travel down past the big golem things into the elemental buildings. Travel through the elemental buildings, through a short downward cave, which opens at another building area with gargolyes and golems. Pass this area down a rock ledge corrider, til you see what looks like the entrance of the main city, being guarded by two ghosts. Pass through this, turn right you will come to a pool, above it on the wall is the an Old Gargoyle, which you can snare to make it come to you.

# May 10 2012 at 11:49 PM Rating: Decent
I began tracking the old garg in the entrance to city where most of the other garg spawns are. When I continued to follow track it lead me to a dead end wall. I couldn't find him at all. I went down lower into the city to the other areas where gargs spawn and I couldn't find him. Anyone have this trouble? Anyone know where he might have been? He's still on track now, I just can't for the life of me find him!

We found old gargoyle at /loc -88.62, 74.76, -318.75, on the mapfiend maps it's near MuckCovered Elemental. Hubby Necro was able to nuke the old gargoyle and get summoned right over to him - he had the tome on the first try. Hope this is helpful.
What I observed

First...Has the updated(standard) gargoyle look. I thought he would have a unique graphic (because he's a named) and thats what is pictured here(as of this posting), but doesn't so that threw me off a bit.

Second...The post that allows you easy access to the rooftops is in the area where it looks like you should be able to jump on the roof because its collapsed but "you just can't quite make it." You will notice a post in the corner and a different roof (red shingles) that you can jump on. This area is also very near the tunnel that brings you down to the lowest part of the zone.

There are actually 13 places in the city where the Gargoyles spawn. The gargoyles also spawn beyond the city on the lower levels and the path to the lower levels. I don't know though, if the Old Gargoyle spawns on the lower levels or the path.

The best way to get to the top of any of the walls is to use a good DD spell and get summoned.

an old gargoyle
# Jul 31 2009 at 6:04 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, I'm just stsrting to camp this guy.

I came down the long ramp to the "inner city" and am outside the gates where you can see several gargoyle's sitting up on top.

On one pull I managed to get 10-15 Guardian's of the city on my tail. Woof! No problem for an 84 necro and his pet but it was exciting.

I couldn't find a way to climb on top of the wall but I finally got summoned up there. Usually the mobs came to me. This was good. Till someone on the ground summoned me there.

My pet has a longer attack range then I do, it works well to use /pet attack <name> and then you don't have to bother targeting anyone. That works well if you don't care who gets attacked or who might add.

edit:
wow, came back for day 2 and he had poppped on the end, on the top of the front wall. I pulled him from the ramp

edit #2:
I had brought my druid over to track and let me know if he was up. This worked great as I saw he was up (somewhere) and I just logged in my necro and found him rather easily on the wall as I said above. When I came back a few days later to move my druid out of the zone, I noticed the old gargoyle was up again. So I'm not sure he's as rare these days as people say. But pehaps its just the normal EQ randomness.

Good luck everyone!

there are 11 PHers for this mob. 7 are on roofs of ruins (place after you get message saying something moves in the corner of your vision). Other 4 are on top of place before that, where the constructs are.

Also, does not always drop the 1.5 piece.

loc of post u can hop onto then onto a roof that takes you up... up... and onward thru the fog. To the Old if ya lucky.

231.72, 338.48, -327.17

took loc after i hopped onto roof but its close enough

happy hunting necros

Bluenec on Drinal

added info...

found the spot where u can target all or most of the upper mobs 83.15, 488.03, -280.71

You have to do some creative jumping from roof to roof then a dirt hillside. They are hard to see as they sit or fd but click up on the area above ya and you will find em.. You probably cant get there if you cant clear all the lower gargs anyway. i got trained several times because of mixture of undead and reg mobs. I found it best when clearing gargs up on the catwalk to just to engage at close range so they dont path poorly and train. You can stay up on the hillish area above the path to confuse mobs if u need a sec to fd evac or whatever, i shot my pet at them from there a lot still havent spawned old but GL
74 necro with merc no probs. If your much lower be perpared to levant a lot but id think still soloable. Also if u mem both invis vs undead and reg invis it is easy to get back after levant with min of fighting.

If you clear the building, you can run and jump up onto the wall from the right room... there's a little broken chest (or something) that you can use as a ramp to jump up on the wall.

Killed all the gargs at the beginning of the walls. He popped up on top of the roof of the bar.
Spawned him yesterday. . .
# Aug 30 2008 at 7:58 AM Rating: Decent
Spawned him yesterday, after killing the first 4 on the front wall, i got summoned by the next one on top of the wall, very good place to be to kill these buggers.

The gargs summon and hit in the 100- 200 range, and are gray, green, and light blue to a 69 necro. There are about 10 spawn points for them, i could reach all of them from where i was. For some of these guys, i let pet tank them completly as i grabbed another one.

WARNING: there is 1 spawn point, all the way in the back, that has BAD PATHING. Be very careful, as i pulled 7 mobs by accident.

I had a few 'an ancient gargoyle' spawn, those were the only ones that were light blue, and hit for about 350 max

After about an hour and a half killing spawns of gargs, an old gargoyle spawned (name not capitalized)

Killed him and he dropped the book.

Good luck to you all on this tome

There are 9 spawn locations for 'a destroyed gargoyle' I have found. I spent 3 days killing everything in zone, then decided to spend last 2 days just killing confirmed ph's. After those 2 days, I used target nearest npc at just the right time and targeted 'a destroyed gargoyle' after having killed all known ph's. I was summoned and attacked by 2 gargoyles, one of which was 'an old gargoyle'.

SO lesson learned: 7 are easily findable; The other 2 are way up high only visible from a certain spot. If you are having trouble spawning 'an old gargoyle', perhaps he has been up the whole time... DOH!

P.S. WTB a tracker
