Well I am level 52, I just pull everything I see usualy 10 to 12. Use sleeves to cast on lower ones, drifting and sleeves on higher ones. Pull the whole gang back toward safe area.. then lightning blast to death. Most times have 1 or sometimes 2 bubs mana left with 227 wis. Also, use spirit of ash while medding on hillside, helps mana regen.
Cake
# Feb 13 2003 at 1:02 AM Rating: Decent
These guys are cake as a 52 Necro. 2 methods of fighting, one with KEI (usually), the other without.

With KEI: Pull with Splurt or Darkness. These things are pretty slow anyway, even slower with Darkness. Sic pet and fear. They have buttloads of HP (as stated earlier in this thread), but once slowed and feared they are cake. You'll probably have to recast fear, and maybe Darkness... but I've only had to recast Darkness once. I dont reccomend letting pet tank very much at all... these things hit pretty hard, and fast... pet will go down quickly. You can cast other DoT's on the wasp if you want to speed up the fight, but you don't really need to.

Without KEI: Only thing that changes is that you're in Lich and you cast Bond of Death on the wasp. This makes the fight a tad shorter, and keeps you good for health while regaining mana.

Give good xp and decent loot. I've gotten up to 9pp off one. Have yet to see any spell drops yet, though.

Since my last post on these I have obtained a few levels and one very key piece of gear for shaman--Jaundiced Bone Bracer (JBB). The way I do them now as well as all the other hornets is this:
1. Set up camp, buff the pet up with everything I have.
2. Pull the hornets with Walking sleep ( ash and cinder hornets ) or Turgurs Insects ( ember and scoriae hornets ).
3. Have pet taunting on, and as soon as I send pet after hornet it engages pet.
4. Start nuking away with JBB, alternating Cannibalizing when HP>mana.
5. Once in a while I will get aggro from all that nuking, just root the hornet and back off and nuke until dead.
I can chain pull these guys and their lower level brothers non-stop practically. Once or twice an hour I will heal pet and re-buff me and pet. If you dont have a JBB, make sure you can melee very well and have a good 2hb, haste item, and alacrity/celerity up, and if you can afford to make them a damage sheild as well ( potion ). Non-shaman will obviously have to do things differently, but these are still great XP at 55 for the effort ( all are dark blue still ). They also drop gems up to sapphires not mentioned on the loot table, and are almost never camped on the server I play on.
I underestimated their HP earlier, I know that if just using spells that 3 E bolts will not kill one, so Id say 3600-4000hp, maybe a tad more.
No hornets run from you, and tend to hit very hard and for max damage alot when their HP are 20%~ or so, so make sure your pet isnt too low on health.
If 2 scoriaes are side by side and you pull one, the other will aggro on a 55 character.
The spells Id say still drop about 7-10% of the time, and they also drop fire opals, fire emeralds, sapphires, mithril necklaces and emerald rings, but they seem to be dropping much less frequently since I first wrote on these many months ago.
Lastly, and for some time now, they are NOT summoned creatures, so anti-summoned spells will not work on them.

Im level 52 shaman and can solo these with 2 E bolts and some melee from me and the pet--id guess roughly 3000-3500 hp as 2 ebolt will not kill one. I pull using Turgurs and then i send in pet and cast e bolt--I leave pet taunting on so it will ( after the first E-bolt ) go back to the pet. Me and pet have alacrity and it help quite a bit to have the best or 2nd best pet up. I only have 152 WIS usually in "battle" mode so i can have high AC and ability to melee them. I would have to agree that they are more trouble than they are worth. Ive only been to the west side nest so I can only vouch for that camp but I'll say this--If a scoriae is next to any other hornet it will aggro along with it even if you use a range weapon or spell, but if u pull these first nothing else aggroes atleast for a 52 character. If I get more than 2 resists then im pretty much screwed and have to zone. Thes guys can take alot of mana to kill but do drop spells--id say 1 in 10-15 drop spells. This is a sweet little camp for a shaman/tank pair as there are enuff spawns to keep busy and if you pull from the north side of the hive you dont get any passer-by aggroes.

Are hornet still considered Summoned
# Apr 22 2002 at 12:57 PM Rating: Decent
I was in BW last night and decided to blast a Scoriae with one of my ward summoned spells and it says this will only work on summoned creatures. Did I miss a patch message?
RE: Are hornet still considered Summoned
# Apr 26 2002 at 3:46 PM Rating: Default
Hornets are no longer summoned creatures. If you look the text says monster, warrior. Bummer! I can confirm this fact for I was hunting hornets with an Enchanter and a Cleric when it happened. One night the Enc and Cleric were using Ward Summoned and I was using Banish Summoned to back them up when I was not kitting. We had to log off early because all servers were coming down for patching. The next evening we logged on and our summoned spells would no longer work. Total bummer! But we are still out there we just had to adjust our tactics

Okay, so check this out. I'm a 45 druid, with 200 wisdom and I was casting esnare, and drifting death (level 44 druid dot) on one of these guys a few minutes ago. It conned yellow at 45 and I did the run, sit, med thing for about 20 mins while I cast my dot FIFTEEN times. Damage for the dot is just about 650damage I believe, so if you do the math correctly you get from 9-10,000 HITPOINTS. I don't know where some of you get your figures, but unless you plan on being able to dish out 10k in damage and survive don't bother. Of course, being a druid I can run and med all day long. It's just the 5GP LOOT after 25mins of kiting that gets me :P

I didn't intentionally mess with scoriae hornets until 49 when druids get Lightning Blast. Before that, it took more than my entire mana pool to kill a scoriae (including using Warden Symbol of Tunare to root and ES Vambraces to rot).

I'm still hunting hornets at 50, though I expect this to be the last level I do. Most ash and cinder hornets /con light blue now, and the ember and scoriae are too infrequent.

Try hunting around the nest, usually can find 3-4 of these hanging around. And lets face it, by the time you get the third one finished off, the first will re-pop.

Yeah the taking 25 minutes to kill a mob is a bit ridiculous--why the hell waste that much time killing a mob that doenst really drop anything nice on a consistent basis. I know for a fact that the hardest hornets are scoriae's and they have tops 3500 hp--2 ebolts and me and pets melee = one dead hornet. It never take me more than 2 minutes to kill one cause slow never wears off during the fight. Yes im level 53 but have the mana pool of a well equipped 43 druid--I have other things to worry about like AC, melee ability, and resist gear so I cant go all out for max WIS like druids can--they almost never get hit while kiting. Anyways the hornets is a nice camp as Ive said before for a 2 man party--i will stay here till 54 or maybe even 55--most of these guys are still blue to me except the lowest level ash hornets. Just today i looted 2 cleric spells Upheaval and Reckoning so good drops will come if you give it a few hours. Laterz everyone

The problem I think you encountered was the fact that when a mob has you on target our dots only do 66% damage, and if it did take you 20-25 minutes that is usually enough time for a mob to regen full health almost twice this may be the reason, you feel the mob has 10khtpts. Hope this helps, to let you know tho as a Druid when that new Anti-summoned spell comes up you will love this place very much.

Ok it is called Burning Woods for a reason , and because of that almost everything in the zone is immuned or somewhat immuned to fire based spells.
Answer use DoTs drones of doom worked really good for me , and now that I'm 51 I just snare and use Ice ,banish summoned , and that nice lil 160 point root spell , and bye bye bug and not that hard .

This are no longer summoned creatures. Banish Summoned will not work anymore.

They resist my fire-based spells 20 or 25% of the time.

Soloing these with ease at lvl 49. Had one drop a level 50+ cleric spell UPHEAVAL yesterday. Cast darkness, fear, send in the pet, lich, bond of death and I end up with 90% of my mana and HP's left.
Soloed at 44

I am a 44 druid with 200 wis. Soloed a one of these (white con) using banished summoned. Took about 15 minutes because I ran out of mana and had to med-kite for while. Got 5gp for the trouble. =P

Cleric Solo
# Sep 25 2000 at 10:40 AM Rating: Default
Not much cleric can solo nowadays. At lvl 56 when I am tired of servering a group and being begged for my res in a crowded zone. I go here and hunt these and greater warbones. Clerics forget that our Summoned DD line is very good. Also I got yaulp IV off one.

I use banish summoned and snare on these and they are easily dismissed, though time consuming....
RE: Summoned
# Oct 12 2000 at 9:49 AM Rating: Default
Yes. I have a level 46 druid and came across one of these that conned even. It took about 10 minutes to kill with banish summoned and a couple of casts off the es vambs (oom so it helped keep them from regening) but the end result was 1/5 bubble of xp at level 46 for only 10 minutes worth of work. As a result I'm hunting these regularly :-)

Only drawback is they appear to be fairly rare spawns as opposed to ash and cinders. One last side note. I got hit only one time by it, it appeared to do quad damage for 90. Took off 2 bubs hp in one swipe with 1106 hp :-(

IMO, these mobs can be classed in the PITA section, which stands for "pain in the a$$". They share this distinction with the Bloodthirsty Ghoul. Anyone who has fought either of them knows that the effort needed to slay one of these is not worth the exp or loot ( no matter how easy it is for you to slay it ). I have never looted any gems from them and have even had a couple "duds" on occasion.

Resists fire
# Jun 29 2000 at 11:54 PM Rating: Decent
These hornets, as well as the wurms resist fire. My level 49 wizard had to use rend rather than draught of fire on them (he had not yet researched ice comet at the time). Prepare to med a little during the battle. If you get a resist you will have to root and med back the mana lost. They used up every ounce of mana to kill at that level. Also note that I have killed about 50 of these and have yet to see any of the mentioned high level gems. Loot is typically 5 or 6 plat. I'm guessing they have roughly 5000 to 6500 hp.

All I know is my group and I (57 war, 52 necro, and a 47 ranger) tried to avoid these, while we were taking out wurms with ease, these seemed to cause more problems. Probably with our strategy
#REDACTED, Posted: Jan 23 2002 at 4:32 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) you gotta be f'ing kidding me, you were "taking out wurms" but you avoided the wasps??? HAHHAHHHAAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH you all are good if you can do wurms, and yet, you suck, cause wasps are about 1000 times easier than wurms.
