WOW Guide Deathknell Newbie Walkthrough

Deathknell Newbie Walkthrough

Deathknell

aylight never finds its way to the land of Deathknell. The Undead starting zone, this area is forever under a green haze that belies the shadow of death lurking around every corner. In other words... it's spooky - unless you're Undead, in which case it's paradise. Spikes, fences, rotting buildings and of course graveyards decorate the terrain. If you're not careful you CAN sneak out before you're ready, but even more important, those nasty Alliance can sneak in so stay alert!

For anyone starting an Undead for the first time (or the first time in a while) this guide will help you navigate your way around your fellow Undead, skeletons, zombies, bats, spiders, and more. Ah... the comforts of home.

Quests

Deathknell is a pretty large area as starting zones go, but relatively easy to find your way around. Most of your quests originate in and around one building so determining your next step is a snap.

As with any time you start a new character you will see a cut-scene related to your race. For those that want to learn the history of their chosen race this is quite helpful. It's also quite neat to see other newbies in realtime in the zone as the camera finds its way to you. When it finally locates you, you find yourself where else? In a crypt.

Your first quest in the area starts at Undertaker Mordo. He awaits you as you arise out of the crypt.Just look for the guy right outside with a big yellow exclamation point over his head. All quest givers will have these. Occasionally you will find one that has a silver or gray exclamation point, which means they will have a quest for you when you have gained a few levels.

On another note, when you can turn a quest in to a quest giver, they will have a yellow question mark over their head. They will also show up on your minimap. Those that you can't turn in yet (because you have net fulfilled the requirements) have a silver or gray question mark over their head.

Quest - Rude Awakening

About time you woke up. We were ready to toss you into the fire with the others, but it looks like you made it.

I am Mordo, the caretaker of the crypt of Deathknell. And you are the Lich King's slave no more.

Speak with Shadow Priest Sarvis in the chapel at the base of the hill, he will tell you more of what you must know.

Quest Objectives

Speak with Shadow Priest Sarvis.

Not the most pleasant of welcomes but hey, at least they didn't burn you. The simplest of quests, all you need to is head down the hill and find Shadow Priest Sarvis. You'll see a gold dot on your mini map when you get close to the chapel. It is the first building on the left as you enter the little town. He and others in the chapel will have more quests for you. Get them all before you venture onward.

Quest - The Mindless Ones

We Forsaken are at war with the Lich King's army of the Scourge: necromantically raised armies of the Undead, foul beasts of the north, and tormented spectres.

The northern part of the village has become overrun with the Mindless Ones, and they must be destroyed. Destroy them, show them no mercy, our former brothers and sisters as they might be. The Fallen are nothing but the Lich King's slaves.

Quest Objectives

Shadow Priest Sarvis wants you to kill 8 Mindless Zombies and 8 Wretched Zombies.

Man this is not a friendly bunch, but hey, you're on their side and that's what matters. Just travel a little north of the chapel and you'll find the village crawling with the Zombies. They're pretty easy to kill and there are tons around so you shouldn't have any problem with them.

Quest - The Damned

My duties include tending to our wounded warriors, tailoring armor and clothes, and assisting Shadow Priest Sarvis with whatever else he might need.

From the look of it, you'll be enlisted in his service also... hunting the Mindless Ones, if I know his mind. Well if you'd like to stay in one piece -- and I've no doubt you do -- perhaps I can help. I'm running out of paws and wings, and if you bring me some, I'll find some armor for you. You'll find a good number of wolves and bats to the south.

Quest Objectives

Novice Elreth requires 6 Scavenger Paws and 6 Duskbat Wings.

When you're out killing Zombies, just venture a little a little west to find the bats and wolves. While Elreth says 'to the south' really it's more behind the chapel she is in. All in all they're not hard to find.

Quest - Tainted Scroll

Ah, while you were off dealing with the mindless Scourge, this scroll arrived for you. I would think it's of some matter of importance as it seems it bears the seal of Warlock Trainer Maximillion. I would take some time to read it before heading out again.

Quest Objectives

Read the Tainted Scroll and speak to Maximillion in Deathknell.

This is the standard 'visit your trainer' quest that every new player gets. Which trainer you are sent to depends on your class. They will give you your 'hearthstone' which you use to return to an inn throughout the rest of the game.

Quest - Rattling The Rattlecages

You've shown your potential to the Forsaken under normal circumstances Namehere - now let's see you under pressure.

The Rattlecage Skeletons, more mindless minions of the Lich King, are a tougher foe than the zombies you have faced thus far. Again, thin their numbers and prove yourself to the Forsaken. Do not tarry - when you are done, speak to me again.

Quest Objectives

Kill 12 Rattlecage Skeletons, and then return to Shadow Priest Sarvis in Deathknell when you are done.

Where you see 'Namehere' in this guide, you guessed it, you'll see your character's name here in-game. The quest itself is as easy as it is to find Rattlecage Skeletons. Basically they are in the eastern side of the village but their numbers are less than that of the Zombies so at times finding them can be a task. Not to worry, spawn times are pretty quick and you'll soon be rattling bones. Warlocks may want to get their class quest Piercing the Veil (see below) before they head out as it involves killing the same mobs.

Quest - Scavenging Deathknell

You there! If you're looking for something to make yourself useful, then listen up!

We need fresh out-of-the-ground recruits to head into Deathknell and search for any sort of useful equipment. Most likely, they'll be in stacks of boxes. We expect more recruits to be rising soon, and unless we want them to stumble about naked we had better get to scavenging.

Well get to work, you miserable bag of bones! I'm not going to reward those without some hustle.

Quest Objectives

Search Deathknell and the vicinity for 6 pieces of Scavenged Goods, and return them to Deathguard Saltain.

Probably the easiest quest in the game short of turning in your scroll, all you need to do for this one is to look for boxes in and around the buildings of Deathknell. Simply right-click on them to loot them. They respawn pretty quick so a couple of circuits of the town will be all you need to find all 6.

Quest - Maria's Last Wish

My friend Maria Fipps lived with her husband Samuel before the plague, but when the plague came Samuel succumbed and joined the Scourge's ranks.

Maria was spared an undeath only to die at the hands of her now mindless husband. So strong was her love, however, that her last dying wish was to be buried with her beloved Samuel.

Samuel Fipps roams at a ruined camp along the road northeast of Deathknell. Defeat him and grant Maria's wish: bury him in her grave, in the first row of our graveyard.

Quest Objectives

Bring Samuel Fipps' Remains to Maria's Grave, then return to Novice Elreth.

By the time you're doing this quest you should be about level 4. Samuel is not a tough fight and you can find him right where Elreth says. Where most people get confused is in finding the graveyard. It's back up towards the chapel. Maria's Grave is of course the only one that you can interact with.

Quest - Night Web's Hollow

One of our greatest struggles is obtaining the natural resources we need to survive. Gold was scarce even in the height of the Alliance's power.

There is a gold mine to the northwest that has been overrun with spiders. We need gold from the mine, but we can't very well get it while the spiders are crawling around in there. I've not much manpower to commit to the task, so we'll just have to do it little by little.

Get up there and see what you can do for us, Namehere.

Quest Objectives

Executer Arren wants you to kill 10 Young Night Web Spiders and 8 Night Web Spiders.

Finally you will feel a bit of a challenge on this one. The Young Night Web Spiders are plentiful and will not attack unless provoked. However, to get the Night Web Spiders you will have to venture into the mine. It is close quarters in there and the spiders WILL attach you if you get too close. Be careful or you just may have more to deal with than you bargained for.

Quest - The Scarlet Crusade

You'll be happy to know we appear to be making progress in the mine, thanks in no small part to your efforts. We can now turn our eyes to other concerns.

My scouts have reported that a detachment of the Scarlet Crusade is setting up a camp southeast of here. The Scarlet Crusade is a despicable organization that hunts us, and they will not rest until every Undead -- Lich King's Scourge or no -- is destroyed. We must strike first!

Be careful, their unholy zeal makes them dangerous adversaries.

Quest Objectives

Bring Executer Arren 12 Scarlet Armbands from Scarlet Converts and Scarlet Initiates.

Another quest from Executer Arren, this will send you on your first of many raids against the Scarlet Crusade that you will partake in through your unlife as Undead. Your targets are well spaced apart around their camp to the southeast so picking them off is like shooting gnomes in a barrel.

Quest - The Red Messenger

Reports from my superiors in Brill indicate than an agent of the Scarlet Crusade was dispatched from the Scarlet Monestary and sent here to Deathknell. According to the reports, the messenger possesses important information on his person. I do not have further details, but whatever it is, we must have it!

You're the most qualified person I have to send. Find that messenger and bring me whatever information you can find.

Quest Objectives

Kill Meven Korgal, the messenger, at the Crusader camp, then return any information you find to Executer Arren.

FINALLY some respect! And more work. Continuing in the Scarlet Crusade chain, now you get to take out their main man, the Red Messenger. He's generally found in the center of their small camp so you just may need help to take him out unless you get lucky and he doesn't have many allies around him.

Quest - Vital Intellgence

These will need to be taken to my superior, Executer Zygand, in Brill. With this information, we'll be able to deal a decisive blow to the Scarlet Crusade. Your services have been useful here in Deathknell, but I need someone to deliver this to Zygand, and I believe he'll be able to find you more appropriate work.

Take the road north out of Deathknell. Soon after entering Tirisfal proper, you'll hit a crossroads. Take the eastern fork and keep going east. You'll pass Cold Hearth Manor along the way.

Quest Objectives

Deliver the Scarlet Crusade Documents to Execture Zygand in Brill.

And with this you're finished in Deathknell. Just follow the directions to make your way to Brill and then the rest of Azeroth beware!

Warlock Quest - Piercing The Veil

Greetings, child. I can see you are still young in the ways of the warlock, power still eluding your grasp. I can sense your eagerness to learn.

And you will learn.

There is no strength in ignorance. Knowledge is our greatest power. Through its application, we can control the chaotic magics and beings of the void, bending them to our will.

I will show you how to bind a servant to your will, but first you must bring me three skulls of the rattlecage skeletons near the abandoned smithy.

Quest Objectives

Bring Venya Marthand 3 Rattlecage Skulls.

As you see this quest refers to the player as 'warlock'. NPCs will address you at times based on the class you have chosen. This quest is warlocks only. Drop rates are not always 100% so you may have to kill more than 3 Rattlecage Skeletons to get all 3 skulls, but that just means more XP (experience points).

NPCs

NPCs, or Non-Player Characters, populate every nook and cranny of Azeroth. Some sell you goods, others give you quests, some just roam around making the world look alive... or in the case of Undead... look dead? Here we'll go over the NPCs you'll find in Deathknell.

Vendors

Vendors buy and sell various items that you can use. They can sell everything from armor to food. Some can even repair your armor. Basically anyone that sells armor or weapons can repair you so keep that in mind when you're looking for a vendor after a hard day slaying spiders. Most are in the buildings in the southern part of Deathknell above the spike wall.

Archibald Kava

Cloth & Leather Armor Merchant

Chances are that unless you really like the look of this stuff, you won't be buying it. This early into the game it's generally not the best idea to buy armor. However, he will repair your equipment, which is something you will find yourself doing a lot from 1 to 60 and beyond.

Joshua Kien

General Supplies

General supplies merchants normally sell food of some sort, water, flint and wood for campfires, ammo for bows and guns, and other assorted things.

Harold Raims

Apprentice Weaponsmith

Weapons you can't afford are here for you to fawn over and not buy. But of course since he does weapons he can repair your equipment.

Blacksmith Rand

General Supplies

Armor you can't afford is here for you to also fawn over and not buy. But again, a place to repair your equipment. Get the feeling you need to do that a lot?

Quest-Givers

Undertaker Mordo

Mordo gives you your first taste of Undeath with his surly attitude the moment you issue forth from the crypt. Fortunately you only have to deal with him once, for "Rude Awakening" (an appropriately named quest).

Shadow Priest Sarvis

You'll spend a lot of time with Sarvis in the chapel receiving and turning in quests. He gives you "Rattling the Rattlecages", "The Mindless Ones", and "Tainted Scroll".

Novice Elreth

Novice Elreth is in the chapel like many of the NPCs here and she gives you "The Damned", and "Maria's Last Wish".

Deathguard Saltain

Saltain is one of the few NPCs you deal with outside of the chapel in Deathknell. You'll know him from his crazy hair... and his name over his head. He gives you "Scavenging Deathknell".

Executor Arren

This fine gentleman will set you on your crusade against the Crusade... so he can't be all bad. From him you will get "Night Web's Hollow", "The Scarlet Crusade", "The Red Messenger", and "Vital Intelligence".

Venya Marthand

Warlocks get a quest in the beginner zones to help them get their first pet. Only Warlocks need visit Ms. Marthand. She gives you "Piercing the Veil" in the chapel.

Class Trainers

Class trainers for every Undead class are available Deathknell in the few buildings south of the spike wall. At every even level (2,4,6,8,etc) you receive new skills which only your trainer can teach you. The more skills you learn, the more powerful you become. With the "Tainted Scroll" quest, you will receive a scroll that gives you a small description of your class and was sent by your class trainer. Remember to seek your trainer out, complete the quest and then return to him/her every even level to receive new training.

Warlock and Demon Trainer

Maximillion and Kayla Smithe

If you need to train yourself or your imp, Maximillion and Kayla are the people to talk to. They can be found in the chapel on the left hand side. Just look for the little imp.

Warrior Trainer

Dannal Stern

Go east young warrior! Well, to the east side of the road in Deathknell, to find Dannal, your trainer.

Rogue Trainer

David Trias

Over on the eastside like the Warrior Trainer, David awaits young rogues to teach them the way of stealth and assassination.

Priest Trainer

Dark Cleric Duesten

Even Undead can be holy... or is that unholy? Either way, Dark Cleric Duesten is the man you need to see to further you in your cause for the light...err the dark... oh whatever. You can find him in the chapel.

Mage Trainer

Isabella

Marryk teaches those going down the path of the arcane how to start out. She can be found in the chapel.

Mobs of Deathknell

Mindless Zombie

Undead

Level 1

Mindless Zombies roam mindlessly mostly on the western side of the village. Some can be found in the buildings as well.

Wretched Zombies

Undead

Level 1 & 2

Same as the Mindless Zombies, they're on the western side. Easy prey for even the first-timer.

Rattlecage Skeleton

Undead

Level 2-3

These roam both sides of the street but you tend to find more on the eastern side.

Young Scavenger

Beast

Level 1

Simple to kill, simple to find. These wolves are behind the buildings on the western side of Deathknell.

Duskbat

Beast

Level 1-2

You can actually find bats all over this zone but the ones you want (that will be easiest to kill as well) are the ones behind the buildings on the westside of town.

Young Night Web Spider

Beast

Level 2-3

Head southwest beyond the wolves and bats to some marshes just before a hill with a cave in it to find these spiders.

Night Web Spider

Beast

Level 3-4

The first mobs that can actually aggro you (attack on sight), they're found in the cave just beyond the Young Night Web Spiders.

Scarlet Convert & Scarlet Initiate

Humaoid

Level 3 & 3-4

The Scarlet Crusade camp in the southeast is surrounded by these hapless humans. Their scarlet colored clothings make great camoflage in the forest... NOT.

Meven Korgal

Humanoid

Level 5

The first 'named' boss you get to kill. He's human and can do some damage to you... so be sure to use your 'cannibalize' skill and eat his corpse to raise your health back up.
